《Otherworldly Merchant》Chapter 479: Deadly Music

I quickly pulled myself together, asking the others to be more vigilant. Li Mazi seemed to have transformed into another person at this moment. The fatigue on his face vanished, replaced by deep hatred!
However, while we were holding our breath and listening carefully, we heard a mournful melody played by a violin.
The music was so clear that it seemed like someone was playing right outside the door.
Although I didn’t know much about this type of music, I could hear the perfect transitions of the glides. This piece of music could make people cry when the climax arrived.
Inadvertently, I became mesmerized by the music. A gold-haired, blue-eyed woman with an oval face appeared in my head. She wore a satin dress with medieval characteristics and looked like a European noblewoman. Although she didn’t do anything, she exuded strong enticing power, giving me a strong urge to move closer to her.
At this moment, the woman’s expression was extremely sad and mournful. Her deep blue eyes were filled with sorrow, and her cheeks looked as if they were covered with frost. Her brows slammed together. She appeared to be suffering from something truly heart-breaking.
Listening to the sad melody from the violin, I seemed to understand the woman’s grief. From deep within my soul, I felt an urge to go and pull her into my embrace to love and comfort her. At the same time, my legs were refusing to listen to me, and were about to walk to the door.
Fortunately, my brain ran speedily, and I pulled myself together.
That thing’s trying to bewitch us!
I looked around to find that Li Mazi and the other two women were infatuated with the music, stiffly walking toward the door! My heart sank, and I bit the tip of my tongue. The taste of blood helped me completely regain my sanity from the music.
I hurried to walk forward as Li Mazi was nearing the door.
How could I let him go out? Immediately, I gave him a hard slap, waking him up.
“Ouch! What’s wrong with you?” asked Li Mazi.
“We were bewitched! You should keep some durum wheat in your mouth. If you feel in danger, chew but don’t swallow!”

I then took out two coins, pressing them on Ru Xue’s and Yin Xinyue’s glabellas. They awakened, slumping on the ground. Ru Xue was so scared that she couldn’t even utter a word. She kept rubbing her chest to calm down.
Yin Xinyue didn’t feel good either, her voice shivering, “Brother Zhang, what should we do now?”
“If that thing enticed us to make us walk out of this room, it means the durum wheat works. As long as we’re not going out, we’ll be all right…”
I gave the girls some wheat grains, asking them to keep the grains in their mouths. “Li Mazi, come to the window.”
“Little Brother Zhang, can we deal with it?” asked Li Mazi.
“Hard to say,” I shook my head.
I gently pushed the window open to see. If the weather was good, I would climb down with Li Mazi. We would then use the emergency staircase to go to the corridor and see the real face of that thing.
Unexpectedly, there was a thin fog outside, and even the street lights had become immensely hazy. If the two of us climbed down, we would be attacked by the ghost. In this case, it was better to go out directly through the door and have a nice fight with that spirit!
Li Mazi looked scared, but he quickly got a hold of himself. He put more durum wheat into his pocket and gave his coins to Ru Xue and Yin Xinyue, asking them to stay in the room. No matter what happened, they shouldn’t go out.
After preparing everything, he took a deep breath. “I don’t care what kind of creature it is. Tonight, it’s either me or that thing!”
I gave Li Mazi a thumbs-up then took the lead, pushing the door open. Li Mazi followed close behind me. After my first step out of the room, I felt a strong resentful energy lingering around the door.
My heart sank. I immediately withdrew my foot, turning and sending Li Mazi a glance.
Li Mazi was a little surprised. However, he took out a handful of durum wheat grains, ready to throw out.

When we stopped moving, I seemed to feel the resentful energy subsiding. That female ghost had guessed that we wanted to go out, so it planned to lurk outside and kill us. I sneered, taking off my jacket and throwing it out of the room.
At that gleam of time, a red, ring-shaped object flashed, directly surrounding the collar of my clothes and shrinking.
I sweated immediately at the scene. If I hadn’t sensed the danger just now, I would have been strangled!
The ring-shaped object found that it was tricked. It resumed its original size and tried to escape. However, Li Mazi was ready; he hurled forward all the grains in his hand.
The ring-shaped object couldn’t dodge. When it got hit, a wisp of black smoke appeared. It shook a few times and turned into a human shadow. I squinted and found that it was the European woman that had appeared in my head a moment ago!
Her face was covered with maggots, and her two bulging eyes were hostilely gazing at me and Li Mazi. My scalp felt numb under her gaze. Instinctively, I stooped my head. Next, I realized that the ghost didn’t have a tummy!
She looked like a chicken that was disemboweled. From under her breasts to above her hip, there was a horrible hole that had only a strip of skin on each side to connect her upper and lower body parts. Her appearance was creepily gruesome! Moreover, as soon as she manifested in her original form, she reeked of a nauseous stench, which was even more unpleasant than the smell of rotten animals.
Li Mazi pinched his nose with one hand while using the other to scratch his neck. After one day, the bruise on his neck hadn’t healed. In fact, it looked even worse now.
I was worried as I guessed that the Yin energy in his body hadn’t been completely expelled.
Anyway, before I could pull myself together, the female ghost screamed and flew toward me. She kept changing her shape in midair. When she approached my neck, she had become a ring-shaped object again.
At this critical moment, all of my potential was stimulated. My upper body instinctively leaned backward. Then, I saw a red light brush past the tip of my nose!
The hairs of my bangs were cut off, and a trickle of blood fell down along with my hairs. I had narrowly escaped death.
I hurried to turn around and looked at the red ring-shaped object, throwing a handful of durum wheat toward it.
The female ghost saw that I was well-prepared. She turned and flew toward Li Mazi. I hurried to sprinkle more wheat grains, but the ghost dodged them easily.
Li Mazi thought that the ghost would deal with me first, so he was also focused on me. When the ghost suddenly turned around to attack him, he was caught by surprise. He could only look at the red light getting bigger and bigger in his eyes, unsure as to what to do.
The ghost was too strong. If he got hit, his head would be cut off.
I was so worried, but there was nothing I could do at this moment.
Suddenly, a golden light flashed behind Li Mazi, and something hit the ring-shaped object. The ring-shaped object was forced to turn back to its ‘human’ form.
This time, the ghost looked even more horrifying. Her right eyeball was dangling from her eye socket, and her entire right cheek had sunk deep into her skull, just as if a big rock had hit her there.
Still confused, she lifted her head, trying to identify what had just hurt her.
Li Mazi and I would never let such a chance slip away. We exchanged looks and took out a handful of wheat grains, throwing them at her. This time, our joined attack worked much better. Shortly after, the female ghost exuded black smoke and sizzled.
Her body trembled hard, then dashed toward the other end of the corridor. Li Mazi gritted his teeth and followed her. However, I grabbed him and pulled him back to the room.
“Why did you let the ghost go?” This was the first thing Li Mazi asked me when we returned to the hotel room.
“Do you think that it’s so easy to deal with that ghost?”
Then, I bent my upper body to pick up the coins at the door. I gave them to him and asked him to take a look at them.
“Holy cow, how could this be?!” Looking at the blackened coins, Li Mazi was stunned.

Getting Hard (Journey of a Tank)
Herald Stone always built tank characters in every MMORPG he played. To be immortal—that was his first Goal, a simple childhood dream. However, the turbulent realities of life put an end to his gaming days. Years passed, and Herald Stone, now having attained success and stability, was presented with the opportunity to redeem himself...to fulfill his first Goal. Trivial? Childish? Others might think so. But Herald Stone always fulfilled his Goals—every single one. No matter what. Immortality beckoned in Mother Core Online, and this time Herald Stone would answer. Choosing a long-forgotten race, hidden away in an unknown region, the journey of an immortal tank begins. This is the tale of Herald Stone...getting hard. Schedule: Mon-Wed-Fri ~1.8k-2.3k words per chapter. Also published on Scribblehub. My other ongoing story: REND | Royal Road Expect a focus on building a true tank in MMORPGs. Heavy game elements and numbers are present. But actual math will take a backseat to strategies involving skill builds and synergies that steadily become more complex while remaining understandable. The main character is atypical in LitRPGs or web novels as a whole. He might take some getting used to. Character arcs will develop over a long period. What you see now will be different as the main character changes. The start of Getting Hard is slow-paced (more so than others of the genre) and includes world-building and character development before focusing on the LitRPG.
