《Otherworldly Merchant》Chapter 486: The Lance of God

Marco ran outside. The bust in his hand wasn’t light. It was difficult enough to just hold it, and now he was in trouble because he had to run. After a few steps, the bust shook and fell to the ground with a low thud.
The female ghost reacted fast. She shot us a fierce glance and turned into a red ring, aiming at Dr. Paolo’s throat.
Paolo had just reached the body and was untying the body from the rope. When he saw the ghost head toward him, he swiftly jumped off the ladder. He picked up the staff on the floor and gave me the other half. He said, “This plan won’t work. The ghost is much more powerful than I expected.”
Then, he rushed out of the church. The ghost wanted to follow us at first, but she then decided to stay and hovered in midair to protect her body.
After we escaped, Paolo casually threw his staff aside. He didn’t want to use it anymore. “Why did the scepter break?”
The scepter in Paolo’s hand looked mighty. Moreover, from the bishop’s logo on it, it wasn’t an ordinary scepter. It was beyond my expectation that the scepter would break.
Paolo shook his head and sighed deeply.
Marco secretly pulled me to the side and whispered, “The scepter isn’t similar to magical weapons. It only works when the user reads the spell. At that time, you didn’t read the spell. That’s why it broke so easily.”
“Marco, I’m so sorry…”
Seeing their expressions, I knew I had carelessly destroyed their family’s treasure. I didn’t know how to compensate for it. Marco just smiled and comforted me. “My father has many treasures. It’s not a problem that one is broken.”
I smiled, but I was thinking about the otherworldly items I should send them to compensate.
“I’ve left some bugs on the corpse. The maggots will grow and multiply quickly in that dark castle. Countless maggots will produce in one night. It should be enough to nibble the entire corpse,” Paolo told me before he left.
However, those men in black wouldn’t just stand and stare. The maggots could only hold back the female ghost from turning into a devil for a while. It wouldn’t change the result.
Paolo suggested that we head home to consider the solutions to deal with the devil. He implied that we shouldn’t put our hands in this, but how could I agree with him?

Early the next day, we took Yin Xinyue and Ru Xue to the airport to go home.
When we saw the two ladies leave safely, Li Mazi and I exchanged smiles.
Men are never afraid of challenges! We are afraid of hindrances! Since our loved ones were safe, we could follow Paolo and have a good fight with that devil.
During the next few days, Li Mazi and I roamed around the big streets and small alleys of Milan. Eventually, we found a genuine peach wood sword. The sword radiated a light red halo, and the handle was polished due to frequent use. After a long time of working in this business, I knew it was an antique from the Tang Dynasty right away. I offered the shopkeeper a high price to get the sword. However, he denied it. He allowed us to borrow the sword, but we had to return it after we were done.
In addition to the sword, I got two warm and smooth pieces of jade that could enhance the Yang energy for the wearer. I drew many spirit talismans when I returned to the hotel. After the preparations were complete, I asked Marco, “When can we start?”
“My father needs one more day to prepare. Tomorrow night, we’ll take action.”
I was stirred up, thinking that the case would come to an end. I hoped no mistakes would be made at this time. To ensure our safety, Li Mazi and I stayed in the hotel for the whole day as we waited to take action with Paolo the next day. Unexpectedly, something really bad happened the next day. Marco received a call from his housekeeper. The old man told him that Dr. Paolo was dead!
As Marco cried telling me the sad news, I was baffled. I followed Marco to his family’s ranch. We saw Paolo’s body soaked in the swimming pool.
From the characteristic of the body, Paolo had been dead for at least twelve hours. In other words, he was dead when Marco gathered with us last night to celebrate in advance.
Marco didn’t blame the servants in the house, and he didn’t investigate Paolo’s death, either. He quietly prepared Paolo’s funeral arrangements in a low-key manner. Since Paolo was one of the most famous business benefactors in Milan, his funeral was held in the Cathedral of Milan.

Marco directly placed Paolo into the coffin and sent the coffin to the main hall of the church as he was afraid that the devil had almost completed the transformation.
Li Mazi and I weren’t Christians. We didn’t enter the main hall as the ceremony carried on. We just waited outside.
This church was the largest Gothic church in the world. Every detail of this place looked so solemn and the followers inside looked pious. They played mournful music.
I pulled Li Mazi and asked him to go outside for fresh air. He didn’t want to leave and enthusiastically showed me the surroundings. “Look, the Jesus statue here isn’t similar to the ones in other places.”
“Is it?” I thought it was interesting and went with him to look at the statue of the crucified Jesus.
Jesus was looking upward. His limbs were nailed on the cross, and he had a Roman soldier’s silver lance stabbed at his side. The lance emitted cold light that could bewitch people’s minds.
The most bizarre thing was that the tip of the lance had a beam of uncoagulated blood, which looked as if it had just streamed down a human body.
After the funeral mass was over, Marco went out. Li Mazi and I said our condolences to him.
“I will inherit my father’s will. I will continue to fight the devil. However, I’m not as good as him. I don’t know what to do next.”
Although Marco had announced to people that his father died of drowning while swimming, we knew it was the Longquan Villa who had assassinated him.
Marco had prepared a huge sum to invite the Bishop and other priests to help us expel the devil. I shook my head and told him not to do so.
Paolo had passed away, so Marco had to take care of all of his family’s business matters. However, his position in the company hadn’t been stabilized yet. If he created a mess, people with dark and ambitious hearts would take the chance to overthrow him and take away the family business Paolo had been struggling his whole life to build and maintain.
After listening to me, Marco accepted my idea, and dispiritedly pulled his hair. We had to direct his attention by asking him about an irrelevant topic.
“What is that spear thing that has blood on it?” asked Li Mazi.
Marco followed Li Mazi’s gaze. He answered weakly, then lowered his head again, “The Lance of God.”
Marco was an enthusiastic young man. However, since his father suddenly passed away, all the burdens had been laid on his shoulders at once. He became flustered and helpless. That night, Marco had to hold a vigil beside his father in the church. Li Mazi and I stayed with him.
There were only three of us in the vast church. The lights were switched off, leaving some big candles as the only sources of light. In this dark interior, the most eye-catching thing was the blood on the Lance of God.
I couldn’t control my curiosity. “Marco, do you know the origin of the Lance of God?”
“When Jesus was crucified by the Romans, the wind roared and roamed the entire city at the moment he died. Dark clouds covered the sky as though God was crying. Three days later, a Roman soldier went to check if Jesus was dead or not. That soldier used his spear to stab his side. Blood spurted from the cut, and Jesus opened his eyes again. The Roman soldier was greatly influenced, and he became a Christian afterward. The lance that had Jesus’s blood later became the Lance of God or the Spear of Destiny. As Christianity was spreading fast and wide, Jesus gradually became the supreme God in the hearts of Europeans. The lance became the sacred item held in the Cathedral of Milan. People say that no matter what time of the year it is, Jesus’s blood on the lance will never dry. It protects the entire city of Milan and the people living here. It can expel all devils!”
After listening to him, I nodded then closed my eyes.
That item is a Western otherworldly item, isn’t it?

The Cosmic Interloper
Synopsis: A cyborg transhuman escapes her corporate indenture and through unfathomably unlikely circumstances, she ends up in a fantasy world of full of unique magic, angry people with sharp implements, and the whole flavor-spectrum of divine entities. Hilarity ensues. Features: - No blue boxes or cultivation, this is not a LitRPG nor about martial arts - Hard-ish Sci-Fi meets hard-ish magic - Generally trying to keep this "rational" Rationale: My primary goal with The Cosmic Interloper is to write something that I myself would enjoy reading. Of course, that’s not the only motivation, but I think it’s the most important one for me to keep in mind, especially as the author. In fact, this whole story came about because after consuming oodles of fiction, I found myself craving a very specific type of story which I couldn’t find many examples of. Then I asked myself, “why not write it myself?” and here we are. Disclaimer: In general, while I’m not writing a comedy, I do intend for this story to be funny and a bit wacky or absurd. That said though, I am using this story as a vehicle to explore some potentially dark topics including (but not limited to) slavery, speciesism/racism, and existential questions of self, consciousness, and identity. Still, I’m going to leave the “traumatizing content” tags off, because I don’t feel that what I’ve written so far (or plan on writing) exceeds the threshold that would be necessary for me to tag it thusly. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way she views the world is not the objective truth (if such a thing even exists).
