《Physician’s Odyssey》Chapter 581 - Despair

Lin Yifu was a dangerous figure, feared for being ruthless in Russia and even in other countries. However, for him to mark someone else as dangerous, that alone speaks for that someone’s strength.
Hanging up the call with his granddaughter, Lin Yifu sighed as he gave a ridiculing smile to the person sitting opposite him. “When one gets old, it’s easy for him to become softhearted. At the same time, we’ll become concerned about the relationship of the children.”
Sitting opposite him was the white man who had just been to the secret base in Saint Petersburg. He smiled and said with slightly obscured Mandarin, “Mr. Lin, the more you’re like this, the more terrifying you are.”
That white man was passing a message on behalf of Lin Yifu, and it was so much so that even Yan Sun’s upcoming mission was assigned by him.
Lin Yifu has built up a powerful connection over the years. Some might consider firearm dealers as Kings of War, but truth be told, someone like Lin Yifu, who had eyes in various countries and could easily interfere between countries was the true Sovereign of War.
However, the Sovereign of War wasn’t as overbearing as one imagined. He turned out to be an ordinary Chinese old man that lived in a small city without any killing intent enveloping him.
Raising his brows, Lin Yifu smiled. “Jackson, what makes you say that?”
Shrugging his shoulders, Jackson tried to show off his command in Mandarin and replied, “A treasured sword is the most intimidating when it’s sheathed.”
Sighing, Lin Yifu helplessly replied, “When one grows old, he must admit that he’s old. In my view, when compared to someone bloodthirsty like Yan Sun, it’s time for me to retire.”
“Mr. Lin, you’ve already reached another realm. Even Yan Sun’s current mercenary group is just a pawn in your hands. In my view, the supreme is the one that plans from the background. Throughout the globe, there are only merely four to five godfather-level figures that can be comparable to you.” A smile rose on Jackson’s lips.
Lin Yifu now realised why Jackson could stay in this job; the latter was truly eloquent. Although there’s nothing remarkable to his Mandarin, his idiom was pretty impressive.
Suddenly, Lin Yifu furrowed his brows and shook his head. “I don’t like the title of Godfather. It just makes me seem like someone in the Mafia! Since the beginning of my career, I’ve walked on the righteous path, and all my businesses are legal.”
Hearing his words, Jackson was briefly stunned. Lin Yifu was right, but at the same time, the latter also possessed unfathomable power that covered the globe. Hence, he immediately changed his words, “I’m sorry, my mouth slipped. Accurately speaking, you’re a genius businessman.”

Seeing how flexible Jackson was with the situation, Lin Yifu laughed, “I’m just joking with you, don’t take it too seriously. Truth be told, I don’t give a damn what others call me. They can call me Godfather or Executioner, but I have my own evaluation for myself.”
“Then, may I ask what’s your evaluation for yourself?” Jackson was baffled as he smiled. He wasn’t a stranger to Lin Yifu’s weird temper.
Letting out a gentle breath, Lin Yifu replied, “When I was young, I was fond of reading Wuxia novels, and I fell in love with a Wuxia character. His name was Huang Yaoshi, or also commonly known by Old Heretic Huang. Hence, I requested that I have to be someone like him. I will not be bothered by how others look, humiliate, ridicule, bully me. I only request myself to live however I want.”
“How can ordinary people be as optimistic as you are?” Jackson sighed.
“If they possess wealth comparable to mine that’s equivalent to that of an entire nation, they will also be as optimistic as me.” Lin Yifu smiled before he continued, “Help me make an arrangement. Inform Yan Sun that I will set up a meeting with the two of them.”
“But he has already refused to admit that he knows the two of them,” Jackson spoke with difficulty.
“The past cannot be erased; it’s impossible for him to forget. There are some people that he has to face eventually. That’s his wife, and not to mention that she came so far for him.” Lin Yifu replied.
Deep into the night at Sparrow Hill, situated at the southeast of Moscow. The lights of an ancient castle were still lit. Sparrow Hill was the latest district for the rich. Possessing a villa here was the dream of everyone in Moscow. It was just like how everyone in China wished to purchase a villa in the 2nd Ring.
The CEO of Russia’s largest aerospace company, Stefan, sat on his chair with his eyes shut. There’s a cup of tea placed by his hand that’s emitting steam.
There’s a man sitting near him, Gregory. He was Stefan’s personal doctor, who sighed and said, “I’m sorry, but your condition has worsened again.”
Waving his hand, Stefan sighed as well, “Can you tell me how long I have left?”
“I suggest that you check into a hospital. Otherwise, it won’t be long till you collapse.” Gregory replied.
“I can’t collapse just like that! Even if I collapse, I have to do it in my current position!” Stefan replied in a solemn voice.
Gregory knew Stefan’s thoughts. Stefan had many powerful competitors, and if they knew that he’s ill, then he would be forced to step down from his current position. This was something that no one in authority could accept.

Letting out a sigh, Gregory’s phone suddenly rang. Standing up, he stepped away and picked up the phone. Shortly after, he returned to Stefan and gently said, “A friend of mine has arrived. His medical skills are much better than mine, and there might be a miracle for your condition if you’re willing to accept his treatment.”
“The utmost importance is whether he can keep his mouth shut,” Stefan asked in a cautious tone.
“Don’t worry about it. I believe that he will keep your condition a secret.” Gregory firmly gave out a promise.
Stefan and Gregory knew each other for many years, and he knew that the latter was trustable. Hence, Stefan agreed, “Then, get him to take a look at me!”
Roughly half an hour later, a middle-aged man emerged from a black vehicle with a medical chest, wearing a hat. When he saw Gregory, he removed his hat and performed a gentleman’s greeting, “It has been a long time, my old classmate!”
Waving his hand, Gregory smiled. “Kelov, you seem to have become more muscular.”
It was Kelov, the Russian doctor who competed with Su Tao back in China. But due to the mess that he caused in China, he was fired from Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. However, with his connections, he soon regained his footing and joined another famous medical university in Moscow.
Gregory and Kelov were both classmates. Although Gregory knew that Kelov was an arrogant person, he also knew about the latter’s medical skills. This was also the reason why he believed that Kelov might be able to bring hope for Stefan’s disease.
Naturally, Kelov would definitely not let go of this opportunity. With someone at Stefan’s position, it was worth it for him to bring out the best of his ability. If he managed to treat Stefan, he would obtain a huge favour from the latter. Hence, Kelov knew that he had to prove his worth at this moment.
Shrugging his shoulders, Kelov smiled. “I was bored, so I’ve been working out recently!”
“I’m afraid that from now on, you will be nervous. Mr. Stefan’s condition is extremely complicated, and a lot of your energy will be required.” Gregory smiled.
When they entered the room, the temperature was a little stuffy. Kelov first swiftly performed a checkup for Stefan before his eyes flashed with disbelief.
As someone who could see through the hearts of others, Stefan managed to tell something from Kelov’s expression and waved his hand. “I wish to know the truth about my condition!”
Letting out a sigh, Kelov bitterly smiled. “Your condition is extremely peculiar. According to my knowledge, there aren’t many treatments for it, and most of them are still in trials. Hence, I’m afraid that you might have to take a risk if you want to survive!”
“Naturally, I’m willing to take the risk!” Stefan replied. If he didn’t take the risk, he would definitely die, and thus, he would rather take the risk and gamble.
Sitting in her office, Shui Junzhuo altered the contract once again. After all, this matter concerned a crucial transaction between the two countries, so nothing could go wrong.
Not only did she alter the clauses in Chinese, but she even inspected the Russian version. She was extremely meticulous, which left the legal personnel shocked since Shui Junzhuo’s Russian standards had reached great heights. Aside from correcting the grammar, she even corrected some translation mistakes.
At this moment, Yuan Lan entered. When Shui Junzhuo raised her head, the former handed a document over to her.
“It’s just as you’ve guessed. I’m afraid that Stefan is ill. Doctors have been visiting his residence for the past few days.” Yuan Lan patiently reported and continued, “Three years ago, he once suffered a major illness. During that period, he also refused cooperation with a few companies.”
Know thy enemy, know thyself. To get the negotiation done, Shui Junzhuo has done all sorts of investigations. Since Yuan Lan was a secret agent, she could find intelligence that others couldn’t.
“Refusing any cooperation while he’s sick was being responsible. Otherwise, there’s a chance that the cooperation might mess up.” Shui Junzhuo considered the matter from Stefan’s standpoint, which she sighed since the latter was a responsible person.
“But isn’t it simple? If you’re sick, you get it treated.” Yuan Lan’s eyes lit up as she suggested, “Su Tao is coincidentally in Moscow. With his medical skills, he should be able to help Stefan, but it’s a pity that he’s currently injured.”
“Su Tao is still healing his injuries!” Shui Junzhuo locked her brows together and sighed, “Furthermore, the problem doesn’t lie here. The problem is how to get Stefan to accept our help. After all, Russia’s medical standards are high, and if he’s willing, he can get many specialists to take a look at him. But since he’s doing it secretly, he’s probably trying to keep his condition a secret.”
Hearing those words, Yuan Lan inwardly sighed. A human’s heart was too complicated, and trying to get something done wasn’t that easy.
But it’s excellent if a glimmer of hope appeared at one’s darkest hour.
After pondering for a long time, Shui Junzhuo inwardly sighed, “If there’s really no option, then I can only get Ivanov’s help. He owed me a favour, not to mention that his relationship is pretty good with Stefan; they’re both from the same faction.”
Ivanov was a famous official in Russia. Su Tao treated his daughter, and there might be some hope in this situation if she could get Ivanov’s help.

Paths of the Chosen (Rewritten, Revised, and Reinvigorated)
Daniel Stewart was chosen to alpha test a brand new Immersive VR game, "The Realms". What he doesn't know is that he has also been Chosen by one of the Powers of a far-off world, and is now a pawn in a game much bigger than any he thought he would ever participate in. Will he survive and thrive in this strange new world, or will he stumble and fall, shattered by the ambitions of another? Does he have what it takes to walk the Paths of the Chosen?---Inspired by the Chaos Seeds novels, TheDespaxas's The Gamer, and a wide variety of games and books, although the world, characters, and systems are my own. Expect high fantasy, magic, combat and intrigue, love and loss, grief and passion. This story is intended for adult audiences and contains explicit sexual content, profanity, and violence (including sexual violence, although not by the protagonist and not as a focus of the story). Chapters with such content will be clearly marked, and all explicit sexual content will be behind spoiler tags. I prefer my stories to have happy endings, and especially in these uncertain times, I feel that it is important to maintain hope. While this tale will reach some dark places, I promise to you that, when all is said and done, the villains will be justly punished and the heroes will prevail and prosper. Remember: it is darkest before dawn, but dawn always comes. Please note also that although this story does not have the [Harem] tag, it does have an extremely slow build into a polyamorous relationship. Additionally, starting with Champion (book two of the series), the [Multiple Lead Characters], [Female Lead], and [Non-Human Lead] tags would also apply to varying degrees. This is a complete, ground-up rewrite of the original Paths of the Chosen, following feedback from here and elsewhere. It is now written in the third-person limited omniscient perspective and in the past tense. In addition, while the major plot beats are unchanged, most of what comes between them has been reconsidered and rewritten, with pacing and characterization as a special focus.---Update schedule: 2 chapters per week (Monday and Thursday), not counting bonus chapters. Chapter length is roughly 2,500 words on average, +/- 1,000 words. Chapters with explicit content tend to be longer so that they are still worth reading for those who would prefer a fade to black. --- Cover art by Agri Karuniawan (@artofagri).
