Chapter 144: Tamed
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios
The brilliant light the Winter Staff emitted tore through the darkness in an instant; countless magical elements stirred, creating a terrifying vortex of elements in the Shadowglen. The sky was filled with snowflakes and screeching ice shards. It was as if heaven and earth had turned white at this moment. Amidst the waves of deafening blasts, the ice particles violently stirred like a tornado, and mercilessly struck the blood-red bat that was in the air…
“Argh…” There was only an awful scream before they saw a large piece of ice plummeting down from the sky and crashing into the ground…
Not even a Vampire could defend against the might of a level-12 spell. Even though they could not completely annihilate this level-18 undead creature, but the Iceblast contained a powerful frost, causing it to be frozen instantly.
This was not the first time Lin Li had used a spell that was level-12 and above. Even though it was within his capabilities, he still felt somewhat exhausted. It was hard to control the mana of Iceblast, and he would suffer from the bite of mana if he were to be careless. After casting Iceblast, Lin Li felt like he was completely drained of energy. The Winter Staff fell on the ground, and he collapsed on top of it.
Lin Li knew that the Vampire was a level-18 Undead Creature, so even Iceblast would not be able to keep it frozen for too long. It could be two or three seconds. Of course… it could even be but one second.
But this was sufficient.
Just when the lump of ice had fallen, a red shadow had already torn through the Obscurus Spell.
At this moment, time seemed to have stood still. The clopping hooves were like droplets of rain, echoing in the hearts of everyone. The searing flames were blazing, and the unbreakable horn started to emit frost under the moonlight. The crimson shade in the night sky gave off a sense of emptiness….
It was coming closer. From a hundred metres to fifty metres, and then from fifty metres to five metres…
And then, there was a rattle that was like glass shattering with a touch of hoarseness.
Initially, the voice was soft, but as the cracks on the ice started to grow, the sound was ringing in everybody’s ears. At the end there was a “boom”, and the ice totally shattered. Within the scattering ice, the drops of solidified blood were unusually vibrant. The moonlight radiated the countless pieces of fine ice bits that had been scattered.

All of sudden, everything became quiet. Other than the blowing of cold wind, nothing else could be heard.
Everyone just stared blankly at this sight. It felt as if it was just a dream. A battle between a level-18 Vampire and Level-18 Shapeshifter, including that level-12 Iceblast…
After a period of time, Mason asked in an uncertain voice, “It’s dead?”
“That’s right…” Orrin’s voice was slightly shaky.
Lin Li kept quiet. He only bent down, and picked up the crystal on the floor.
“Eh?” Lin Li had only just picked up the crystal, and he realized something was wrong. The crystal was still covered in strange inscriptions, but that crimson color had suddenly disappeared. The crystal that was in his hands was just like how it was when he first dug it out. There were no colors on it. It was just clear and transparent, just like the clear water of a lake.
Just as Lin Li was feeling confused, Mason’s face had suddenly turned white. Both his eyes stared straight behind Lin Li, and he looked like he had just seen a ghost. “Felic, Felic… Quickly look!”
“What’s up…”
Lin Li turned his head to look while still being confused, and saw the Shapeshifter walking towards him. Just when he turned his head, the Shapeshifter had also stopped moving, and then… it slightly lowered its head!
“Damn!”
Even a transmigrator like Lin Li knew what it meant when a magical beast lowered its head at you…
It was total submission!
Lin Li rubbed his eyes; he thought he was hallucinating. It was a level-18 beast. How could it be tamed by a level-13 magic shooter?
Magical beasts could indeed be tamed, but the requirements for taming were extremely demanding. To tame a magical beast like a Shapeshifter, it might not even be possible for Andoine. It required total superiority in strength, absolute suppression with levels, and even other tricky requirements.
As for himself…
Both sides had a difference of five levels, so how could he have made a level-18 Shapeshifter submit to him?
And yet, everything in front of him was real. No matter how Lin Li rubbed his eyes, that level-18 shapeshifter was still lowering its head about ten metres away, neighing from time to time. It was still showing signs of being tamed and friendly. It did not look like a level-17 magical beast, but like a stallion in reins.

“This can’t be real…” Mason’s eyes were as big as a cow’s, and he stared at the Shapeshifter in bewilderment. “Felic, did you raise this Shapeshifter?”
“How could I afford to raise it…”
“Too wicked…” Mason’s mind had always been different from the others, and he gasped in admiration a few times before suddenly asking, “How about lending me to ride it for a few days? Hahaha. If I could ride that Shapeshifter around Alanna, that would really be… Wahahaha!”
“Idiot.”
“F*ck, Orrin! I haven’t settled the score with you yet, and you provoke me again!”
“Not happy?”
While the two of them were arguing, Lin Li realized that the ethereal body of the Shapeshifter started to become transparent. The changes were not obvious, but it was still vivid. After each passing second, the crimson body of the Shapeshifter slowly became dull until it became totally transparent just like the crystal in Lin Li’s hand.
And then Lin Li saw that the Shapeshifter that was lowering its head suddenly became glitters of light. At the same time of releasing that brilliant light, the glitters were absorbed by a type of energy, forming a stream of light in the night sky. It seeped into the crystal just like the black fog during the day…
Lin Li could clearly see the crystal starting becoming more crimson in color as the glitters started to seep in. When the last bit of light had disappeared, the crystal in his hand returned to the state it was in when he’d just entered the Shadowglen.
With this sequence of events, Lin Li started to figure things out…
The crystal in his hand was not an ordinary crystal.
Lin Li could almost confirm that this crystal that was full of inscriptions harnessed a potent power. This power was strong enough to seal or trap a Shapeshifter. That night in the Nightmare Mountains, when the Shapeshifter bumped into him, it had to have triggered this power and got sealed inside the crystal instantly.
In fact, Lin Li had always guessed that it was this what had happened. Hence, he used the word “eaten” to describe the situation back then.
The battle from before had further confirmed Lin Li’s conjecture. The appearance and disappearance of the Shapeshifter from the crystal had proven everything.
And yet, this conjecture raised more questions…
Lin Li could not understand why the fallen undead creatures turned into a thick black fog and seeped into the crystal. What was even more confusing was: why did the Shapeshifter coincidentally appear just now? Lin Li could only instinctively guess that these were all related.
As for what was the relation, Lin Li was clueless. He could only faintly guess that the black fog was the essence of the undead creatures…
“I will figure you out!” Lin Li held the crystal firmly and scolded it fiercely.
The powerful crystal made Lin Li really excited.
Instantly sealing a level-18 beast and being able to summon it when needed for battle. Such power could drive a person mad just from thinking about it.
Furthermore, the power it had just displayed was merely the tip of the iceberg. Nobody knew what was the limit of this crystal. If it could seal a level-18 magical beast, what about level-19, 20, or even more?
All these guesses started to permeate Lin Li mind all the time. No matter how much he researched, he could not understand how to utilize this power. As a person that liked to split hairs, it was an unbearable torture for Lin Li.
Lin Li gripped the crystal, and pondered for about half an hour…
Ever since the Shapeshifter appeared, the searing temperature on the crystal had seemingly disappeared. It was cool when he held it now. It was unlike the previous time when he held it, when there was a burning sensation. No matter how hard he pondered, he still came to a dead end. He put the crystal pack into his pocket in frustration, hoping that he would discover something new during the upcoming missions…

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

A Forgotten Hero
(author: This is gonna be a long synopsis I apologise. This should be a prolouge but as you will see I have a seperate prolouge, please forgive me. This fiction as a warning beforehand is as basic as it comes, prettymuch following all story conventions of both the mecha and school life genres. I am mostly writing this to figure out my writing style before I begin something truly creative and uique. I dont wanna ruin something I worked hard on by being illiterate. Also illustrations are at a minimum because all I have access to is MS paint.) In the year 2028 humanity (accidentally) created the means to travel great distances through space in a short period of time. This has led humanity down the road of great technological advancement and also led to the spread of humanity across their home system and just begiining first steps upon other solar systems planets. In the year 2033 the human colonies in space broke from the chains of their old countries creating hyper advanced societies disregarding nationality and any other defining factor. Two space societies formed the Solar Empire a monarchic society with its capitol on the moon Titan which controeld the entire human home system aside from Earth which still remained divided into seperate contries. The other was the Extra-solar Leauge. A mysterious society outside of easy contact range with any other humans besides themselves. To help with construction and other work outside of sealed and breatheable atmospheres of their cities and ships the Solar Empire and Extra-Solar Leauge created what became known as Advanced Movement Shells(AMS). These machines are best described as huge exoskeletons or "mechs", and they aided greatly in getting things done by increasing strength, durability, and the amount of tools able to be used. They also aided in quelling rebellions among extremist groups forming in these new societies. Finally in the year 2050 the Solar Empire having divinated their emperor, and now beliving themselves to be their religions chosen people, the Solar Empire declared a holy war of conquest against all the nations of Earth in order to conquer it under the idea that all humanity was required to bend to their divine emperors rule. The first month of the war whent badly for earth as the divided nations fell one by one due to the Empires superior weaponry among other technologies which made their forces nearly invincible. The AMS were used to great effect due to their almost "magical" level of technological advancement. Some nations able to put up some kind of defense created their own versions of these technological terrors. From there the war became a brutal stalemate and suddenly was won by the forces of earth. Why this is still hasn't come to the light of the common man, but one thing is for certain it took a heroic effort from one, or many people to win it for humanity...
