The Rise Of Nathalia Carter Chapter 148

Spencer hadn't called in two days. Nathalia held her phone in her hand, waiting for Spencer to pick up while watching Mrs. Davidson looking at her. No luck again. She couldn't reach him.
"Why are you smiling like that? I don't like the way you are looking at me." Nathalia said plainly to Mrs. Davidson, who was gazing at Nathalia with her eyes wide open.
Thinking that she might be hungry now, Nathalia asked the maid to serve dinner. She had done some research and told the kitchen what to prepare so that it would please Mrs. Davidson's body and mind.
The two sat opposite each other, looking at the food. Without any exchange of words, they both dug in happily. Before Spencer left for the business trip, he had asked Nathalia many times to help take care of his mother. Nathalia didn't want to in the beginning but was composed at the end.
During the day, both were occupied. Nathalia was busy with her study and work while Mrs. Davidson had her fixed schedule and plenty of activities to do. In the evening, having dinner together was a sure thing. It somehow turned out better than the two of them had each other's company than both eating alone.
Even though they would often disagree or even argue, neither of them lose their appetite but seemed to enjoy their meal even more.
Nathalia forked a piece of beef and tasted it. The beef curry was one of her favorite dishes. The beef was beautifully cooked. It was tender and with the right spice. "Would you like some beef curry?" Nathalia asked Mrs. Davidson casually.
Mrs. Davidson was enjoying some creamy pumpkin soup as she looked up at Nathalia, shook her head, and said, "No."
"Yeah? So I can have it all to myself then." Nathalia said cheerfully. Mrs. Davidson was surprised to see Nathalia's reaction. She watched Nathalia delving into the plate of beef curry happily and couldn't help wondering if it was really so tasty.

"Huh. I've changed my mind. I would love some, too." She exclaimed, worried that Nathalia would wolf it all down. It looks rather tasty. I can't just let her eat it all.
Nathalia smiled, a victorious smile. Playfully, she said, "You changed your mind very fast. Are you sure? Perhaps you've just changed your mind again? If I were you, I..."
Mrs. Davidson had no patience to listen to Nathalia and instantly took the plate and scooped a big spoonful of beef curry onto her plate.
"Huh. Cheeky!" Nathalia commented in a fake angry tone.
As the two spent more time together, Nathalia realized that Mrs. Davidson was more a child than a mother. What she would do most of the time was fighting for food and anything that Nathalia liked. As soon as she noticed that Nathalia liked something, she would take it, like a child.
What a strange character! It's fun, though. I don't mind. Nathalia thought to herself. She would normally play along with her too.
After dinner, Nathalia was about to leave to go back to her own house when Mrs. Davidson complained, "Why hasn't Spencer called me? Has he forgotten me? Has he called you?"
She sulked, knitting her eyebrows.
Nathalia's lips twitched slightly. Alight, I will be sweet to her. Poor girl. She asked the maid to bring some dessert and coffee as she talked to Mrs. Davidson gently.
"It's impossible that he forgets you. Look at you, so tall and slim. Who can forget someone like you?" She wanted to comfort her, but somehow it came out weird.
Mrs. Davidson glared at her instantly and retorted, "Huh! What do you mean?"
After spending some time with Mrs. Davidson, Nathalia got to know her a bit better. "It's a compliment. I mean, you are so beautiful, and that's why Spencer's very good looking."
That truly pleased Mrs. Davidson. Her son was always what she was proud of the most. Hearing someone praising her son meant a great deal to her.

"For sure. My son is not just good-looking, he's also very talented..." Mrs. Davidson said with a smile. Every time when she talked about Spencer, her spirits picked up, and she grew excited.
Nathalia hadn't slept very well in the past days, and she was yawning while listening to Mrs. Davidson. Exhausted, she couldn't wait to get back to her place and had an early night.
Irritated, Mrs. Davidson glared at Nathalia, "Hey! You. That's rude. Are you not listening to me?"
"My name is Nathalia Carter. You can call me Nathalia." Nathalia said sternly.
"Why are you telling me your name?" Mrs. Davidson looked at Nathalia with a puzzled face.
Helplessly, Nathalia gave up. What's the point in arguing with her? She won't understand it anyway.
All of a sudden, Mrs. Davidson seemed to have realized something and said, "No matter how you sweet talk me, I won't allow Spencer to marry you. I like Anna. I've watched her grow up. She's the loveliest girl."
"Marry her then," Nathalia replied casually, half-jokingly.
However, Mrs. Davidson took it seriously and retorted sternly, "I'm a woman. I can't marry a girl. Oh, wait, I mean..." She started debating with herself as she spoke as if her mind was all tangled up, and she couldn't find a clue.
Nathalia had not thought much about relationships or marriage anyway. She was still very young and had enough issues to deal with and no time to think about other stuff. "Don't worry. I will never marry your son." She said plainly, hoping that would help get Mrs. Davidson out of her own debate in her mind.
However, instead of feeling relieved, Mrs. Davidson put on an angry look. "You think my son is not good enough for you? Huh? He's good-looking, talented, caring. He's perfect. Now tell me, what don't you like about my son?"
"What?" Nathalia frowned, finding it impossible to process her thoughts. There's no logic. How does her brain work? Communication is impossible. Nathalia thought frustratingly. "What do you want me to do then?"
Mrs. Davidson pondered for a while and said, "You can love him, but don't expect anything back. It's impossible." She said proudly.
Nathalia gave up, collapsed into the sofa, let out a deep sigh while cuddling a cushion. "It's too hard. I don't want to do that. I will be with a man who loves me and adores me, who keeps his promises, who is genuine and real. There will be no lies, no arguments. He will protect me, take care of me, tell me jokes, make me laugh, comfort me during difficult times. I will be the owner of the garden in his heart. He will dream of me in his sleep, misses me when I'm away..."
Unexpectedly, she spilled out her wishes for relationship love all at once. It was indeed every woman's dream to have a man that loved her completely. Somehow, Nathalia felt an emptiness afterward, a heavyweight in her heart.
As she looked up, she noticed Mrs. Davidson's tears. Startled, she quickly handed her some tissue and asked, "Did I say something wrong? Why are you crying?"
Tears were running down her cheeks, and she felt a bitter pain in her heart. "You are too greedy. You are asking too much. All men are the same. None is good." Mrs. Davidson murmured as she wiped the tears off her face.
