The Rise Of Nathalia Carter Chapter 174

Nathalia smiled and sighed, "But I'm not like her."
One could see the similarities between Nathalia and her mother. She had inherited her beauty, but she believed that she did not, or could not have the kindness that her mother had.
She had learned to believe that the only way to revenge was to be as evil as the enemy, if not more. That to treat evil people with kindness made no sense to her. It's nothing wrong to be kind, but to allow yourself to be taken advantage of by others just because you believe in kindness is stupid.
Spencer embraced Nathalia understandingly. "You are stronger, braver than your mum." He said gently.
To Spencer, Nathalia was the most precious. What she had in her, her courage, her bravery, her beauty attracted him more and more every day.
She was the gem he desired.
"You, sweet talker. My mum was perfect." Nathalia giggled. His sweet words did do the magic and swept away her sadness.
What's changed him? He's not the proud and self-centered Spencer anymore. He's sweet and considerate now.
"To me, you are the perfect one." Spencer looked Nathalia into her eyes and said. Sweet it was indeed, but more importantly, it was sincere.
Suddenly, the rustling sound from the trees made Spencer turn and pull Nathalia behind him protectively. He slowly walked towards the trees, his eyes fixed on them, "Who is it?" He demanded.
The moon had hidden behind the clouds. It was dark and eerie. Nathalia shivered with fear, her heart racing. "Who else would come here at this time? Could it be a ghost?" She asked, frightened.
Spencer patted her hand gently as a gesture to comfort her, then he ran towards the tree.
"No, Spencer, don't go. Just get your bodyguard..." Nathalia shouted from behind. Just then, a figure ran out from behind a tree and away from them. Spencer dashed forward and caught the figure. "Who are you?"

The figure didn't utter a sound. He struggled to free himself, but in vain. Spencer was holding him down. Worried, Nathalia picked up a stone and came running after them only to see that Spencer had got the man under control, and he was safe.
She heaved a sigh of relief and took out her phone to call the police. The light from the phone revealed a familiar face. Both Nathalia and Spencer gasped.
"Father! It's you!" Spencer exclaimed.
"Mr. Davidson, what are you doing here?!"
Kurt pushed the astonished Spencer away, his hair messy and his shirt tainted with dirt. He stood up, swept the dirt off his shirt, and said rather casually, "It has a good view here. I'm here for a walk."
A night-walk at the cemetery? Spencer and Nathalia looked at each other, both amazed by Kurt's answer. That's a ridiculous excuse. Who, in their right mind, comes to the cemetery for a walk and at this time?!
"Mr. Davidson, it's midnight. You could have scared us to death." Nathalia said as she recovered from the shock.
Why was he hiding behind the tree? Because he saw us here? But why did he have to hide anyway? Also, who is he visiting? My mum? Does he know my mother? Nathalia wondered.
Questions after questions popped up in her head.
Spencer studied his father's face and couldn't think of a reasonable explanation.
Kurt reacted as if everything was normal. He took his time, cleaned his shirt, then glanced at Nathalia indifferently, "Nathalia Carter, aren't you a brave one? By the way, you still owe me a new shirt. I will have the bill sent to your company tomorrow."
Nathalia found it weirder and weirder. It seemed like Kurt was trying to hide something.

"Huh, Kurt Davidson, you don't care about that little bit of money, but I guess you aren't a very generous person, are you? Sure, I will pay for it." Nathalia replied with confidence and pride as if she was pitying a beggar.
Kurt's lips twitched and said, "Just as stubborn as her. Anyway, goodbye."
Nathalia watched him walk away. She knitted her brows, and the questions in her head would not stop. What does that mean?
"What's about the shirt? Where does that come from?" Spencer grabbed Nathalia's arms and asked instantly. Though confused about his father as well, he was more concerned about Nathalia.
Thus, Nathalia told Spencer what happened from the very beginning, including how Mrs. Davidson got run over, what happened at the hospital, her fight with Anna, how Anna reacted and how she went to look for Curt and chase him around in his house. Every detail except the swear she made to Anna as she didn't want Spencer to worry about it or feel guilty.
This was the first time Spencer got to know the real story. He grew excited and worried, knitting his brows as he listened.
When Nathalia finished the story, Spencer was so shocked that he couldn't utter a word for a while. He just gazed at Nathalia till he found his tongue again. "Nathalia, thanks for saving my mum. If you were not there, mum could have..." He was almost in tears.
He felt extremely grateful for meeting Nathalia for having her in his life. Her bravery, her determination, her sense of responsibility touched his heart. She's my angel. He thought to himself.
"It's ok. Spencer. It's not a big deal. You know, even if it was a stranger, I would have helped." Nathalia blushed and said shyly.
All she did for Spencer and his mother was out of pure love. She didn't do it to please him.
"Really? Not because you love me?" Spencer teased and thought, she's so different from Anna, who would constantly remind others if she has helped someone. Nathalia is so humble and loving.
"Really." Nathalia nodded with a smile while thinking to herself, of course, I would help others, and it is true that I did it because I love you.
Spencer embraced her tighter, gave her a loving squeeze, and said, "I love you."
Neither of them mentioned Anna as if she didn't exist in their world.
It was already dawn when they returned home. The day had replaced the night. Nathalia heaved a deep sigh and prayed; it's a new day. Hope everything goes well.

The Beta Test
Our nameless narrator participates in a beta test for an early VRMMO game Meridian 60. That's not the real name but it captures the spirit of the adventure given the chronological and contextual era of the game. His character is unique and special but purely for mundane reasons and not because of any inherent or social significance. The first chapter which is mandatory to submit a story on RR serves as a bit of a prologue with some exposition, although I limited that to a reasonble level. I plan to begin releasing additional chapters starting Thursday, to align with the 48 hour submission approval process and also because I have something to do Wednesday. I haven't written anything but the summary and first chapter, nor have I plotted anything out. This is because my plan is to release roughly 34000 words a day, 10 chapters of ~12.5 pages each, for 3 days at which point the story will be complete. I'd have liked to plan for more but handling the interface tables and so forth needed for a data heavy litrpg slows down the writing process. 100k words is a bit short, a standard pre epic fantasy 300 page spec fic novel, but this is mostly a writing exercise and I am considering a longer project if I can maintain the pace. Probably do a different concept, maybe a dungeon core, over 5 days, since a 500 page novel is more common these days. Slight subversion of VRMMO stories Stat heavy/crunchy No paying your bills by gaming No out of game conspiracies No angst, interpersonal drama, or damsels/dudes in distress Schedule is 30000 words a day excepting the first chapter, a limitation of RRs fiction submission system Fantasy, high magic, male lead, no party, guild, or harem No gore, some profanity, no sexual content, and no current plans for anything traumatic
