The Great Thief Chapter 889 – Beaten At Their Own Game
Translator: Halcyon Translations Editor: Halcyon Translations
The two top Thieves continued to attack the Boss in a precise rhythm. Even if there was an occasional lapse in crowd-control, both Lu Li and Water Fairy had damage reduction skills and ways to regain HP.
However, this quest wasn’t as simple as it appeared.
“Please wait,” Caliph Scorpidsting suddenly pleaded as he threw down his weapon and stopped resisting.
What now? The two of them had never faced a situation like this before and didn’t know what to do.
There was no shortage of highly intelligent NPCs in this game. Some of them were intelligent all the time, like Keeper of the Grove Remulos and Garona, while others only gained intelligence during specific circumstances required for the plot.
“I have decided to surrender. I am willing to be your servant. Please spare me,” Caliph Scorpidsting begged.
“Servant?”
Water Fairy looked at this seemingly insignificant make and wondered how he could be used. If she could take him to fight for her in the next Instance Dungeon that would be very useful. He was a quasi-Boss, which meant he had great Attack and Defense. His few skills weren’t that much weaker than a regular player’s either.
“Give us all your equipment and we’ll believe you,” Lu Li said.
“Of course. Why didn’t I think of that?” Water Fairy laughed. If Scorpidsting really gave up all his equipment, this would be very profitable.
Caliph Scorpidsting bowed his head and seemed to hesitate for a moment before saying, “You must guarantee my safety. You can’t do anything to me. Maybe you should make a pledge.”
“Dammit, he’s just spouting nonsense. Let’s kill him quickly,” Lu Li snorted, pretending to be angry as he raised his dagger.

Poor Caliph Scorpidsting had already abandoned his weapon – how could he face Lu Li now? The little bit of HP he had left started to dwindle even further.
“Wait, wait, I’ll do it! Is that not enough?” Caliph Scorpidstring asked helplessly when he watched Lu Li raise his dagger again. He knew how ruthless this guy was; he was completely destroying him a moment ago.
“Lu Li…” Water Fairy didn’t speak directly, but sent a message through the party chat.
“Don’t worry, I’m counting the damage,’ Lu Li responded quickly. He knew what she was worried about it. This was no ordinary monster; they had taken a quest from the Ravenholdt Manor and they couldn’t afford to not complete it.
“You can take both of these daggers. I’ll leave them on the ground for you, alright?” Caliph Scorpidsting asked with a pained look.
He likely didn’t have the best equipment – it probably wasn’t even Gold grade. At best, he would drop Silver equipment, which was now useless for players like Lu Li and Water Fairy.
However, there were also many blueprints that could drop from these quasi-Bosses, and there was also a small chance of them dropping rare materials.
“I don’t have…” Caliph Scorpidsting hadn’t finished speaking before Lu Li flashed behind him and once again put his HP in a critical state.
Water Fairy was shocked as she watched. She had to admit that Lu Li was indeed a ruthless person. He was happy to kill someone even though they had already surrendered.
“Stop! I’ll give you everything else,” Caliph Scorpidsting whimpered. He sounded really scared this time.
“I will count to three. If we don’t see the things we want, we will take them ourselves.”
Lu Li stopped, but he didn’t move his dagger away from Caliph Scorpidsting’s neck. He was ready to finish the job.

“Here!” Caliph Scorpidsting cried out as he dropped a formula indignantly.
Lu Li grabbed it and glanced down; it was a valuable Enchanting formula.
Although Lu Li himself didn’t know how to Enchant, most of his equipment had been Enchanted. There were several Enchanting specialists in the guild. He just needed to give them equipment and they would use various materials to add Attribute bonuses to it.
Lu Li had previously received a blueprint to Enchant demonic weapons.
The effect of the Enchantment gave the weapon the ability to curse a target, causing continuous Shadow damage and reducing their Defense by 10%.
The Enchantment he had in his hand was called the Demonslaying, which would give a melee weapon the chance to stun a Demon and deal additional damage.
Although Demonslaying was not necessarily as powerful as a Demon weapon, it was a very worthwhile Enchantment. Moreover, the flaming effect that it gave was similar to that of Wandering’s Teebu’s Flaming Longsword. The appearance was quite impressive and highly sought after.
“There are two of us. How can you expect us to let you go with one item?” Lu Li asked as he put the formula into his backpack and continued blackmailing him.
Water Fairy thought that what Lu Li was doing a bit disgraceful; there seemed to be no end to him extorting this monster. Her eyes had been opened today.
“You bastard elf, die!”
Suddenly, there was a loud bang, as though some bombs had been detonated. In addition to the damage, those in range of the explosion were also stunned. Water Fairy and Lu Li were both affected, which allowed Caliph Scorpidsting to jump eight yards away.
At the same time, a group of monsters swarmed in from outside the tent.
There were Wasteland Rogues, Wasteland Assassins and Wasteland Mages, all protecting Caliph Scorpidsting who was in the middle of the group.
Caliph Scorpidsting said angrily, “Damn elf, did you really think I was going to surrender? Stop dreaming – I was just stalling for time.”
Lu Li and Water Fairy looked at him dumbly. Neither of them knew that he was stalling, and it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Even if he really did surrender, Lu Li would have made an excuse to kill him to ensure that the quest was completed.
“Kill them all!” Caliph Scorpidsting shouted as he waved for his minions to attack.
Lu Li activated the special effect of his shoes and instantly appeared behind the Boss’ defenses. He cast a series of skills which stacked up his combo points, then gave up on dealing more damage and instead turned into a giant wolf.
Lu Li had used a skill that he normally tried to hold back on. Caliph Scorpidsting, who had already been hurt from before, couldn’t withstand it.
The monsters heard the final screams of their boss, before turning their heads to find an adventurer cutting at his head with a dagger. He then put the items that were dropped into his backpack and left the dead man behind on the floor.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

The Errant Otherworlder Watanabe
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and trucks whom transport men to other worlds.” Meet our titular protagonist Haruto Watanabe, a man who has all the markings of a good protagonist for a generic portal fantasy story. As an overworked office worker, to escape from the grips of crippling capitalist alienation, he had taken up to reading many stories where young men like him were transported to other worlds and enjoyed their lives at a most leisurely pace. Armed with genre-awareness and (what he believes to be) a marketable personality which would make him an easy audience self-insert, he longed for the day the isekai express would take him to his long-awaited adventure to another world. When the fateful day came, where the fair yet harsh mistress that is the fabled truck took Watanabe on one last date to the other side, he was most ready to escape his previous life, ready to embark on an errant so great he’d be most overpowered, his heroics so exceptional and his harem so vast that they would barely fit ten or twenty volumes of an overly long novel made by a desperate author looking for quick cash. Lo and behold however, Watanabe instead found himself in a low fantasy world which lacked severely in the department of any game-like systems, cheat skills or easily charmed damsels in distress. In a setting so antithetical to his established genre savviness or any attempts at power fantasy, how will a man like Watanabe, lacking in strength, wits and courage, manage to survive in a land most foreign to him? This is my first time trying to share to the wider world what I’ve written, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading the errantry of Watanabe as much as I enjoy writing about them. I'll be posting one chapter per week on Sundays, along with extra chapters whenever I get the chance to write more than usual.
