The Great Thief Chapter 1280 – Young Successor
Translator: Halcyon Translations Editor: Halcyon Translations
As an Ice Mage, Sorrowless easily restricted Fat Monkey’s Movements. He then began to increase the distance between them and stagger his movements with skills of different cast times.
His moved very frequently, but there didn’t seem to be a pattern to it.
At first glance, it looked like he was kiting his opponent. This ‘kiting’ looked particularly elegant on the surface, but it was being done for purely aesthetic reasons. There were many players that recorded this movement and discussed it on the forums, but in the eyes of the experts, this was just a waste of effort.
Even so, Sorrowless kept up these movements. Shouldn’t a Mage on Mage matchup mean that you would try to crowd control the other Mage and deal damage to them?
Was this constant back and forth necessary?
Sorrowless would even sometimes cancel the skill that he was casting to move.
This was not how kiting was meant to be done. Why did this Mage expert make such exaggerated movements? Even the fangirls that had been shouting things like “Sorrowless I love you” were becoming embarrassed for him. He was obviously someone who could easily win in this fight, but he chose to rely on this technique. It was one thing to rely on a technique, but why was he being so silly like Elevenless…
Elevenless: Hey don’t provoke me or I’ll beat you to death.
However, real masters could easily see what was being done here. Lu Li remained expressionless, but he sighed in his heart. How could he forget this technique? This was something he should have spread around his club. It actually was nothing difficult to understand. Whenever Sorrowless moved slightly, he was always moving out of Fat Monkey’s attack range.

Fat Monkey soon realized what was happening too, especially since he was trying to cast the skills.
Sometimes, the small steps were almost negligible, but the distance between them always mean that he didn’t have enough range.
Whenever he cancelled his skills to move forwards, he found that Sorrowless had already channelled a skill and was waiting for him.
When Fat Monkey was almost done channelling his skill, Sorrowless would run away again.
This seemingly simple thing was in fact not easy to do. Sorrowless wasn’t just relying on positioning, but he was also making use of his crowd-control skills. This was because Fat Monkey was a Fire Mage and Sorrowless was an Ice Mage, so his straight damage just couldn’t compete.
“I knew that he would lose, but I didn’t think it would be this miserably,” Lu Li said as he smiled bitterly.
“This is okay; Sorrowless has also lost some HP. The main thing he needs to do is to speed up the rhythm of the fight so that Sorrowless has to use more crowd-control skills. I’ll go next. I should be able to deal with him with 1/3 of my HP,” Moonlight said calmly.
“Yeah, alright,” Lu Li agreed.
Fat Monkey was still fighting and he was struggle to keep up with Sorrowless’ fighting rhythm. However, it was still an honourable moment for him, as the God of Mages was revealing his technique before the world and was using it on him.
The expression on his face didn’t reveal his thoughts. Fat Monkey, who seemed to always be
impatient, appeared to be quite calm.
In the beginning, Fat monkey wasted quite a few skills because they failed to cast. Skills that were cancelled but completely channelled still cost mana, but more importantly, they cost time and opportunity.

However, as the battle unfolded, Fat Monkey quickly found his advantage.
Scorch!
As this skill had been maxed and he had quite a few pieces of equipment that increased his fire damage, Fat Monkey tried to keep Scorch on his opponent for as long as he could.
There was no one who could afford to ignore this Scorch.
Sorrowless couldn’t either, so he had to fight more urgently. He had to quickly deal with Fat Monkey, otherwise, he would be almost dead by the time he did. Then, he wouldn’t be able to fight the next opponent at all.
The harder Fat Monkey fought, the more excited he got, but he still couldn’t escape his fate.
When Sorrowless’ HP was down to 55%, Fat Monkey’s challenge came to an end. There was still a 55% difference between him and his goal.
There was some hissing in the crowd when this happened. Fat Monkey couldn’t even take more than half of his opponents HP. For most players, this was utter defeat… but what was the commentator talking about? Why was he talking about Fat Monkey becoming famous?
What was this about his fame doubling…
Surely that was a joke?
“This was quite the fight. I believe that Mages will do a lot research on this fight,” Dark Wind said.
“That’s right, Sorrowless has shown us how to open the gap in a Mage on Mage matchup, and his positioning was a textbook classic,” Dark Seas Dragon agreed with Dark Wind. Both of them were senior commentators who thought that this entire fight was wonderful.
“In fact, Fat Monkey had also done very well,” Dark Wind said with a smile. “At first, I thought he would just get humiliated.”
“It takes a bit of crazy for an average player to challenge a God-level player, but Fat Monkey doesn’t seem to be crazy at all. Moreover, he seemed to be in complete control throughout the entire fight,” said Four Seas Dragon.
“Hahaha, are you trying to say that he has no conscience?” Dark Wind couldn’t help but laugh.
“Oh… that’s not what I meant,” Four Seas Dragon laughed as well, then continued, “It’s just that your mental strength is also very important. That is likely how Fat Monkey got to this point so quickly. Ruling Sword’s March Rain is also a genius, but her mental strength isn’t like Fat Monkey’s.”
“Fat Monkey also has good reaction time. He was very quick in coming up with a countermeasure, especially for a newcomer who encountered this tactic for the first time. This performance truly gave the tactic a good benchmark for demonstration.”
“I think there will be a lot of clubs interested in Fat monkey,” Four Seas Dragon said emotionally. “In fact, the growth of a player is simply due to two things – mental strength and technique. Many newcomers have been stuck or unable grow for many years, and the main reason for that is because of their mental strength.”
“I think I understand what you mean,” Dark Wind said. “If someone has perfect mental strength, then as their technique improves, they will certainly grow stronger and stronger.”
“Well, I think this is the case,” Four Seas Dragon responded, then declared, “Fat Monkey is the most promising person to become the new Mage God after Sorrowless!”

Trailblazer
The story of a man who accidentally wrote another world into existence. Everyone breaks away from their mundane daily life in one way or another. Our protagonist, an unfortunate consequence of circumstance, being no different, often escaped the harsh reality of life by writing stories of an alternate world of swords and magic. Though he recognized the difference between reality and fantasy, he could've never imagined what would happen, when the line between the two blurred as lightning struck down from the skies, and his escapism fantasy became all too real... After he came to, he would soon learn that things in the other world aren't quite as he remembered them to be. The world he wrote of had become but a shadow of its former self. Albeit hesitant at first, he sets off on a quest to find out the secrets behind the Trails, yet even then, he can't help but wonder... Can he really bring his world back to its old glory? —————————— I have never written a story before in my life and now I'm doing so in a language I don't natively speak. Groundbreaking quality is probably not something to be expected, but I do my best to keep things readable. With the necessities out of the way, both constructive criticism and other suggestions are very much welcome, and I'll do my best to take them into account when writing future chapters.

The cover is commisioned and done by: Artist: FatCatInTheBox ***** Before you lot bashes me up with my English etc., consider this: 1. This is my first novel. First conceptualized and written some 23 years ago. Only until last year that I did some improvisations and improvements to what I had kept in the dusty corner of my room all these while. This story sees the light of the day because I challenged myself, that's all. 2. English is the 6th language that I speak. And in RRL, I'm using British English mostly to write my story. 3. Easier said than done. Rather than subjecting me to subjective comments/reviews about the language, point it out and suggest an alternative. One or two would do just fine. It goes a long way. The Pledge - This story shall continue till it ends properly.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
