Chapter 146: The Big Four, Part One
Translator: Exodus Tales Editor: Exodus Tales
Edited by Aelryinth
Actually, the Gale Wolf King wasn’t the only three-star gold-quality beast Zhang Che encountered in the past two days, but his good luck seemed to have come to an end a few days ago.
Over the past two days, he slew over half a dozen three-star gold-quality exotic beasts, but only obtained a single beast card out of them, leaving Zhang Che on the verge of tears.
He could swear to the gods that these were the unluckiest two days of his life.
He slowly came to discover a pattern: the higher the level and quality of an exotic beast, the higher the chances of it dropping a beast card.
All the dark gold-quality exotic beasts he slew had dropped beast cards. This made him hazard a bold guess: were all beasts sure to drop beast cards once their quality reached dark gold?
Even so, the number of dark gold-quality beasts he killed were still too little. He wasn’t able to confirm whether his hypothesis was true.
“My luck these two days is really something… it was as dark as it could get! According to the past statistics, half of the eight three-star gold-quality beasts should have dropped beast cards for me, but now there’s only one card for all my efforts…”
However, Zhang Che was only complaining for a little, now that he was countless times richer than before. He didn’t really put this to mind.
Looking at his combat potential, he already had two dark gold-quality subdued beasts, and was about to be able to gain his third. A gold-quality card really didn’t matter all that much to him.
However, he had to take the entrance test when he got back, and would be concealing his strength at Tier Three. He still needed a gold-quality subdued beast to put up a front. As such, the Gale Wolf King really came at the right time.
After obtaining this beast card, Zhang Che immediately tried it out, and discovered that the Gale Wolf King truly excelled in speed. Its agility simply overshadowed all his other beasts.

With this fellow, the entrance test shouldn’t be a problem any more!
———
Over the next two days, Zhang Che continued sweeping the area. However, he was still wary of running into danger if he explored deeper into the mountain range, so he only explored in the two directions along the outskirts of the mountain range, with his base as the center.
Zhang Che’s bad luck persisted, perhaps even got worst. In the next two days, he only encountered a small handful of gold-quality exotic beasts, with none of them dropping any beast card.
However, he discovered another three-star dark gold-quality exotic beast. Alas, that fellow excelled in burrowing underground, disappearing without a trace right before Zhang Che’s eyes as his three generals launched a combined attack on it.
Although the Dark-Scaled Lizard Commander had the Earth Displacement skill, the skill only granted it the ability to move freely within the earth and rocks, but not the ability to attack from within. This left Zhang Che incomparably depressed.
Even though he didn’t obtain another gold-quality or higher beast card, Zhang Che gained a huge amount of low-quality beast cards. It was enough to leave a smile on his face.
“Tsk tsk, I think I can open a mid-sized beast card shop when I return!”
In four days’ time, Zhang Che actually obtained over two hundred beast cards of various qualities. The poorest grade among them were two-star bronze-quality cards, while the best ones were four-star silver-quality.
At present, Zhang Che couldn’t be bothered with anything poorer than two-star bronze-quality. He didn’t care to hunt those exotic beasts; he’d rather look for a higher levelled exotic beast if he had the time. Advancing to Tier Four was what mattered the most!
——
On the afternoon of the fourth day, Zhang Che felt hungry after fighting a few huge battles. As he was about to get the frisky monkey to hunt a large herbivore beast for him as dinner, he suddenly froze for a moment, before showing a pleasantly surprised look on his face.
It had been exactly thirty days since he obtained the rainbow crystal, and it had just proven that his conjecture was right. It took seven days to advance a black iron-quality card to bronze-quality, and fifteen days to rise from bronze to silver-quality. Now that thirty days had passed, the silver-quality Fiery Scorpion was finally welcoming a qualitative advancement.

Raising the Fiery Scorpion’s quality meant a lot to Zhang Che.
It was not only his first capable subdued beast, it was also a gift from Miss Tienan. It held extraordinary value to him.
However, as Zhang Che quickly grew stronger, and especially since his other combat subdued beasts were all around gold-quality, with some even at dark gold-quality, the Fiery Scorpion’s position became a little awkward.
Its strength was truly a little too low to continue using it. If he retired it, he kept feeling as if something was missing.
It simply left him feeling conflicted.
Now, with the gay scorpion (Fiery Scorpion: Wha-what? What did you call me? You shameless prick, who taught me that disgraceful technique in the first place?) … Um, the Fiery Scorpion finally advancing to gold-quality, and its level rose to two-star just recently, although its strength was still at the bottom rung compared to Zhang Che’s other fighting beasts, at least it was something he could bring out to use.
Since Zhang Che had to conceal his true strength for a very long period of time in the future, this little gay scorpion could act as a decent fighting force.
The Fiery Scorpion’s evolution would take close to half an hour. As such, Zhang Che ignored it for now. Instead, he quickly found a large exotic beast and the frisky monkey slew it, then carried it to the stream nearby. He watched as the frisky monkey cleaned it up with well-practiced moves.
Zhang Che was getting lazier and lazier. He would never do anything personally if it was something the frisky monkey could do in his stead. It felt as if he was turning into an immoral capitalist.
(Frisky monkey: Are you not a freaking immoral capitalist? You have only been making me work for the past few days, and not fed me any meat at all. Are there any other masters as miserly as you? )
Of course, the truth was that the frisky monkey was used to eating roasted meat marinated with spices and salt. Zhang Che’s spices had ran out, and salt was running low. He did roast an exotic beast for the Gluttony Monkey without applying any condiments, but was rejected by this little picky eater after taking a few bites in the end.
By the time the frisky monkey was done cleaning the corpse of the large exotic beast, Zhang Che finished starting a bonfire, and the phenomenon in his spiritual sea also came to a stop.
The Fiery Scorpion had broken out of its shell and reached gold-quality!

With a thought, a streak of golden light shot out from between Zhang Che’s brow, turning into the Fiery Scorpion, whose size and color was different from before.
This fellow’s body length had grown to around two meters long, especially its tail, which made up over half of its body length. Its carapace was now a darker shade of red, with a faint purple hue. One look and you’d know it wasn’t to be trifled with.
After advancing to gold-quality, the Fiery Scorpion’s strength increased in all aspects. More importantly, it had a skill now. Although it didn’t seem very useful, it was really decent for a low-tier beast.
Zhang Che sighed with a faint smile, “I didn’t expect your skill to actually be increased penetrating strength. You’re really going down the gay path, aren’t you?”
Fiery Scorpion: !@#$…

Disclaimers: Chapter Frequency: I aim for one chapter a week. Chapter Length: I try to keep chapters between 3000 and 6000 words. Binge Preference: I plan for 30 chapters per arc. If you want to binge a complete arc, then that is the number to wait for. I will also add a line to chapters indicating the beginning and end of an arc. Advanced Access: I have created a patreon page with early access to four chapters for patrons. What to Expect: Progression fantasy with a western fantasy setting and with eastern fantasy elements. A main character that is forced to explore a very narrow path of magic due to a permanent condition. A main character that is a part of a larger cast. A main character that is growing but won't become the strongest around anytime soon. A story following a single main character but with introduction or theme setting scenes without the main character. What Not to Expect: Edgy grimdark characters – I will never write a sexual violence scene or gory descriptions of torture. I hate reading it and I would hate writing it even more. Romance – romantic relationships will never be the focus of the story and only appear in the background. The main character is preoccupied with other stuff. Other forms of relationships (family, friends, companions) play a bigger role. Cover: The cover art was commisioned from redditor Linh-Nguyen87. The font is alita brush by Inovatype Typefoundry.
