Chapter 234: Unicorn

The main gate opened. The inside, however, was actually very narrow. There was only a tunnel, about five meters tall and eight meters wide, extending all the way into the rear of the mountain.
The tunnel wasn’t long, not even reaching fifty meters. The concrete walls on both sides had many tiny openings like a beehive, with weapons peeking out from within them. The weapons would turn anyone into a sieve if they dared try breaking in.
Not only that, in order to prevent powerful beastmasters from breaking in, there were also high efficiency laser weapons overhead that were effective against mid-tier exotic beasts!
The outer security guard from before clarified the situation to those inside, then hurried towards the other end of the tunnel. After verifying his identity, the wall suddenly parted, revealing a huge cargo elevator.
After silently following this security guard into the lift, Zhang Che finally heaved a sigh of relief. Fortunately, the Myriad Transformation Lizard’s invisibility skill was even able to avoid being caught on the cameras in the tunnel.
It was to be expected if you thought about it, however. No matter if it was the human eye, or the camera, they captured an image through the reflection of light. If an object was fully transparent, naturally it wouldn’t be seen.
——
The elevator didn’t descend far. It came to a stop a few seconds later.
The security guard went off to look for a doctor in a hurry. On the other hand, Zhang Che followed the tunnel into the mountain base, sneaking in.
“There’s less than seven minutes left. If I still can’t find the healing-type subdued beast by then, I can only do it the hard way!”
Luckily, the base was not a military complex, after all. The layout wasn’t very complicated. He found the human experimentation area in less than two minutes.

It was a spacious area, occupying close to a thousand square meters. A hundred steel cages were placed in here, and those locked inside the cages were most probably the live specimens used for human experimentation.
What was strange was that not many injuries could be seen on these people’s bodies. However, their expressions were all totally numb, their eyes void. They were either sitting or lying down, without any spirit in them.
There were some people in white coats and masks moving about in this space, occasionally stopping and operating the devices along the hallway, recording some data.
Some others were pushing carts about, stopping in front of the steel cages and opening them, injecting fluids of various colors into the captives.
Perhaps they knew that it was meaningless to resist. These live specimens were like dolls, cooperating with the staffers without any hint of resistance.
Zhang Che’s scalp turned numb watching this. Although there weren’t any bloody scenes, this area was akin to Purgatory. This was simply inhuman and antisocial!
Although… Zhang Che was no moralist, nor did he have the ability to rescue everyone here. He was only thinking that he could perhaps do something to give these pitiful people a chance after obtaining the healing-type subdued beast.
What happened after that depended on their fate.
After scanning through his surroundings, Zhang Che began searching for a Chinese man, hoping to find Chen Lishan’s brother, Chen Qikun among them.
Alas, after looking through the captives, Zhang Che didn’t spot anyone who fit the description Chen Lishan gave him among the few Chinese men. Maybe Chen Qikun was already silenced by the people from this company? Or perhaps he was under house arrest somewhere?…
Zhang Che no longer bothered about this matter, and focused as he waited.
“Only three minutes left!”

Zhang Che hid silently in a corner. He didn’t have the time to go searching in other areas. He could only wait here idly for an opportunity, for some negative effects to show on the human specimens just injected with the prototype genetic treatments. At that time, that healing-type subdued beast would naturally appear before him!
Time slowly passed. The human specimens injected with the medicine started to show different reactions.
Some of them had their skin color change completely, like turning bluish-purple or crimson-red. Some of them had their veins swell up, looking like it would burst at any time. Some of their bodies even started mutating, tiny scales growing on their skin, or their bone structures warped, their bones piercing out of their skin.
Howls of pain started to envelop this spacious area.
Zhang Che kept silent, his hands clenched tight into fists.
“Only one minute left!”
Suddenly, in one of the cages, a man’s skin broke up like fissured dry land. Large amounts of blood flowed out from the cracks.
However, that test subject had no inkling of this. He was slipping off into coma.
The nearby staffer in white coat immediately cried out, indicating that the subject’s vital signs were rapidly deteriorating, requiring immediate medical attention.
Zhang Che’s eyes lit up. -Is it finally coming?-
At that moment, an ordinary man in white coat walked toward that particular steel cage up from among the group of people in the hallway, his steps hurried. A five-colored ray of light shot out from his brow, turning into a pure white horse.
The white horse looked unusually spirited, with a foot-long spiral sharp horn on its head.
-Is this a freaking unicorn from Western legends?- Zhang Che’s eyes widened from shock. He hurriedly drew closer, and with his data eyes, revealed this peculiar white horse’s attributes.

As expected, this beast was really called a Unicorn. Not only did it have the ability to heal, from the looks of it, its attacking prowess wasn’t weak, either.
Zhang Che’s eyes immediately emitted a radiant light.
-There’s no mistake; this is the healing-type subdued beast I’m looking for! It should be able to cure mom’s illness with just its normal healing! I must get my hands on this subdued beast, no matter the cost!-
Zhang Che instantly rushed out of the corner he was hiding in, running straight towards that mid-tier beastmaster in the midst of the group of researchers.

Dominion Expansion (a 4X LitRPG)
Clay is one of the world's top players of 4X games, a genre where the goal is to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate. He's also one of the only players in the world to so stubbornly stick to the one city strategy, a favorite tactic of his that involves only ever using a single city or planet depending on the game's setting. All that matters to him is winning with his favorite strategy, but earning the respect of his fellow players for taking a sub-optimal strategy to its highest level has always been a nice bonus. And now it is because of his skill and entertaining determination that he has been chosen to represent a higher realm in a strategy game where the fate of Earth and dozens of other worlds are at stake. To the victor goes the spoils, and the spoils include entire worlds and billions of lives. That's how he ends up representing the ascended realm of Hell in a grand "game" between an entire pantheon of godly beings and other higher powers. But while it may just be a game to those overseeing it, it is a genuine war for survival to those participating in it where billions of real lives will go to the victor of whoever wins, and many will die before the game is over. Quick Author's Notes: System inspired by Civilization, Endless Legend, Stellaris, and Crusader Kings 2. Combat mechanics inspired by the Total War series. Slow-paced with many long-term plans. Protagonist has a personality heavily inspired by Ron Swanson. Know who that is and love him? You should like Clay. Know who Ron Swanson is and hate him? You'll probably hate Clay. Planning on writing every single day (turn). Days with important things happening will have the system/game mechanics be the priority of the chapter. Days where there isn't really anything important happening will be more slice-of-life and focused on character interactions. Designed a dice-based randomized map generator to create the world as the story goes on, so I don't even know myself exactly what's going to happen as a lot is dependent on world generation. Tech tree with hundreds of technologies already designed. There is a "harem," but it's not the main focus, the girls won't be cardboard cutouts, and I'm not going to completely forget about any previous women in the relationship whenever a new one comes along. One last thing. The "game" starts off with primitive technology level. The current plan is for the "endgame" tech level to be equivilent to WW2-era technology. After that and war just gets boring until you end up in space. Cover is temporary and made from royalty-free stock images while waiting for the real cover's commission to finish.
