Loving A STRANGER Chapter 53

"No...They're not!" Kylie retorted, her face flushed.
Ethan did not put it bluntly, but now he held her hand, and they moved on.
When passing a street lamp, their shadows were elongated: one was long, the other was short, and they were holding each other's hands.
Looking down at the shadows of herself and Ethan, Kylie, for a moment, felt that this was the happiness she wanted.
She thought: if this marriage is real, it seems that we should hold each other's hands and walk till we become old. She smiled with her eyes bent forward. The smile on her face was no longer fake, but natural and beautiful.
Even Kylie herself did not notice that her heart no longer belonged to Aiden, but to the man beside her.
Ethan's hands were big and full of strength and warmth. Now that he was holding her, Kylie was reassured.
They walked around Toprak Mansion. "How can the house be so big?!" Kylie asked with emotion. "But it's really spectacular, with European elements and a little Chinese style."
"Do you like it?" He strongly pressed her on her shoulder.
Kylie thought about it seriously, then nodded. "Who could not like such a great house?"
The mansion was big with good architecture, and had an artificial lake behind it; she certainly liked it.
"When we divorce, you'll get it." Ethan's hand, which was on her shoulder, moved slightly.
Hearing that, a woman who loved to take petty advantage of people, like Kylie, was supposed to be happy. But now her heart seemed empty, and the smile on her face looked a bit fake.
"Well, if you're homeless, then you're welcome to live here."
She could not make out his face in the shadow of the trees. Kylie did not see the smile on his face.
The next day, they set off to Connell.
Since it was a honeymoon, the driver, Elliot, and Pupu, were forbidden to go with them.
Kylie jumped on the front passenger seat of the Knight XV, touching here and there excitedly. "This car is really cool!"

Ethan squinted at her. His lips moved like he was about to say something, but Kylie interrupted him: "When will we arrive?"
She was a little afraid that he would repeat those other words.
It seemed that as soon as she showed her fondness for something, he said: 'When we divorce, you'll get it.' At the moment, she did not want to hear anything more about divorce.
Ethan said gently, with his eyes looking straight ahead: "An hour, so you can sleep for a while."
Kylie nodded, but she could not sleep.
The Knight XV was her dream car, but she had never had a chance to appreciate it before...
After suppressing her desire for a while, Kylie asked him obsequiously: "Can I take a drive?"
"No way," Ethan responded expressionlessly.
"Just a few minutes..." She took the initiative to clasp his arm and acted coquettishly.
Kylie felt disgusted with herself, but she really wanted to drive her dream car.
Ethan tilted his head and took a look at her, his sight falling on his arm, which was deliberately being rubbed against Kylie's breasts.
His breath became heavier, and the blood in his body was rushing to the same place. He blinked his eyes hard and did not respond.
Kylie did not give up either. She moved forward and gently exhaled in his ear.
"Dear..."
Suddenly, the car squeaked to a stop.
Ethan's face darkened. In an effort to suppress his desire, his eyebrows were trembling. He pulled up the handbrake, then said in a cold voice: "Ten minutes!"
"Yes, sir!" Kylie jumped happily out of the car and changed seats with Ethan. As soon as Ethan got back in the car, he immediately fastened his seat belt.
It was a new road, under construction, and not yet officially open, so there were almost no other cars on the road. Otherwise, he would not have let her drive; he had his own limits.
Kylie sat in the driving seat, touching the steering wheel and smirking for a while. Then she decidedly stepped on the accelerator.

There was the sound of a clear whistle blowing, and then the car ran on its way.
She grinned with excitement and joy, while the man beside her did not have any expression on his perfect face. His big hands tightly grasped the handrail, while his two long legs pedaled hard against the bulge under his seat.
At that moment, he regretted his greed for the word 'dear' and his bold decision to let her drive.
Kylie was not simply bold; she was wild!
Whistling, she kept pressing on the accelerator, as though she were a strong woman riding fine bloodstock on the prairie!
As Kylie was enjoying the unprecedented fun, Ethan spoke at the most inappropriate moment: "Time's up!"
His voice was as cold as an ice brick, and it cooled down her passions in an instant.
No matter how much she acted adorably, and how coquettish she was, Ethan prohibited her from touching the steering wheel again. He had risked his life to pursue a girl; he would not let that happen again.
Kylie reluctantly returned to the front passenger seat, biting her lips and staring at him pathetically.
Ethan looked straight ahead and drove attentively, completely ignoring her... Suddenly, his big hand was covered.
Kylie looked into his eyes with surprise, as if she had discovered a new land. "Why are your hands so cold?"
Ethan tugged his hand back, lit up a cigarette, and took a quick puff. The smoke floated away through the gap in the window. He squinted his long and big eyes.
"Are you...scared?"
Hearing that, Ethan choked on the smoke and coughed. The car was full of the girl's gloating laughter.
An hour later, the Knight XV stopped in front of the hotel.
Walking into the hotel, Kylie followed Ethan to the floor that he had booked.
When the room door opened, Kylie was dumbfounded. "Lord Ethan, is there something wrong?"
Ethan tipped the waiter and asked him to put down the luggage at the door. Then he looked at Kylie. "What's wrong?"
"Is this really a hotel? Are you sure it isn't the White House...It must cost a big fortune to stay for a night, right?"
Surprised, Kylie walked into the room. The room was extraordinarily big. What was more shocking to her was that there was an open-air swimming pool on the balcony, exactly the kind of boundless pool she had seen in the pictorial.
Ethan explained lightly, with an unchanged poker face: "We'll just stay a few days. I can afford it."
Ethan dragged her inside. Kylie's eyes quickly swept over every decoration in the room, which all seemed to be priceless. "But..."
"Lord Ethan, how much money on earth do you have?" Kylie asked with astonishment.
"Not much, but more than enough for your spending."
Kylie felt that he was getting good at flirting, but she was a bit used to that and did not feel strange.
"You take a break first." Ethan put the suitcase in the bedroom and turned around to leave the room.
"Are you going to meet your friends again?" Kylie asked directly.
Ethan patted her on the shoulder and replied in a low voice: "I'll be back soon."
Kylie was a bit confused, wondering why he had so many friends, and why every time he met up with them, he had to be so mysterious.
But in the end, she nodded. "OK."
She always reminded herself that she was only his shield and did not deserve to be involved in his affairs, or even to ask about them.
After Ethan left, Kylie walked around the room by herself.
She reckoned that when he was booking the room, he must have told the hotel that they were going on their honeymoon. Hence, that was why the hotel had placed all kinds of balloons on the ceiling, the walls, and even on the floor...
All of a sudden, she thought of her husband's habit and hurried into the bedroom.

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
