Loving A STRANGER Chapter 218

Ken and Kylie sat in a booth at a nearby coffee shop. Ken had been very persistent, and in the end, he refused to leave unless they went for coffee. In order to help the time fly, Kylie began to chat with him. As she stirred her coffee, she said, "Ken, tell me something about your aunt."
Ken frowned and said, "Are you dating me, or are you dating my aunt?"
"First of all," Kylie replied, "I am not dating either of you. Second of all, if you can't even handle a little chit chat, I leave."
Ken sighed and said, "My mom and dad died in an accident when I was five. I've lived with my aunt for half a year. Then she married Laurence and sent me to an orphanage. She just wanted to get rid of me.
"It was bad at the orphanage," he continued, "so I ran away. I broke into my Aunt's house through the doggy door. While I was there, I overheard my aunt and Laurence talking about money…"
Ken looked up at the ceiling as if he'd lost his train of thought. Kylie wasn't prepared to let it go through because she suspected that some of this had something to do with her mother. "Go on," she prodded him.
"Why are you asking these questions?" he moaned.
"Somehow," she replied, "it seems important."
Ken took a sip from his coffee and held the cup for a couple more minutes. Finally, he said, "Laurence said to my aunt that he wanted to get a divorce so that he could marry into a richer family – and he promised that he would take my aunt into the family after he succeeded."
"So…" Kylie sighed, "The only reason that Alice Devis has been supporting you financially is that you found out her secret. But why would any rich family in their right mind want Laurence around?"

Before Ken could finish, someone touched Kylie's shoulder and said, "Lord Ethan wants to see you."
Kylie turned around and found herself face to face with Eliot. Elliot bowed respectfully and pointed to the French window. Outside, she could see Ethan's car, and she wondered how long he'd been sitting there.
Ken followed her eyes, and when he saw Ethan's car, he said, "You don't have to go…"
"I do, though," Kylie replied as she dropped a hundred dollar bill on the table. "My treat," she said as she walked away with Eliot.
As Kylie got into the car, Ken picked up the hundred dollar bill and kissed it.

The car stank of cigarette smoke, and as Kylie stepped inside, she cursed and said, "Ethan, you smoke too much. It is a disgusting habit!"
Ethan took a deep breath, snuffed out his newly-lit cigarette, and asked Elliot to drive.
Once they were on the road, Kylie asked why Ethan wasn't at work and if it was because he missed her too much. Ethan scowled and asked him what she'd been doing out with Ken White.
"It was nothing," Kylie replied. "We were just discussing something.
Ethan frowned and said, "What were you discussing at a coffee shop that couldn't be discussed in the office?"
Kylie stared at him. "Are you jealous?"
"No," Ethan replied. "I'm worried about your safety."
Kylie laughed. "It is the middle of the day! Nothing is going to happen!"
Ethan replied, "You can never be too careful, Kylie."
Suddenly Ethan pulled out an envelope. He opened it, pulled out a single photo, handed it to Kylie, and said, "What can you tell me about this?"
Kylie looked at the picture and recognized it. The image showed her in Stephen's arms. She turned to Ethan and said, "This isn't what it looks like. I slipped and fell. If it weren't for Stephen's quick reflexes, I could have been seriously injured! Whoever sent you this obviously has some malicious intentions. You have to believe me!"

Ethan looked at her for a second and said, "Okay, I believe you. There is something going on. I received the picture this morning. A few hours later, I get a text message from a blocked number, and it tells me that you are here with Ken."
Kylie thought about it for a minute and said, "I wonder if the culprit is Dora… That is one conniving bitch!"
Connecting those two "coincidences" together, Kylie compressed her lips and asked, "Is it, Dora Hilton? I wonder what she will do next. It seems to me that she could be capable of anything."
Ethan sighed and said, "Don't worry. "I'll send a safety guard to be by your side to protect you from danger."
"Great," Kylie laughed, "The last thing I need is a guy who's tall, strong, and handsome."
Ethan smiled and said, "Who said the guard would be a man?"
Kylie smiled. She hadn't considered the possibility that the guard would be female.
Back at the hospital, Dora slapped Khloe's as she learned that her plan had been foiled. She spat in Khloe's face and called her an idiot. "I didn't know that Ken White would stalk me," Khloe cried. What should I do now?"
Dora played with the ring on her finger. She glared at Khloe and said, "You are truly useless. You've ruined everything! I have no idea what happened yesterday or what will happen in the future. From now on, though, don't contact me. If I need you, I will contact you!"
Having had her say, Dora left the room and slammed the door behind her.
Khloe cursed and began to smash the room to bits until there was nothing functional. Her hair was a mess, her clothes were wrinkled, and the person she saw in the mirror was a crazy person. All of a sudden, her phone rang. She looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Aiden. She picked it up and said, "Hello…"
Aiden sounded sad when he spoke. He said, "Khloe, you've disappointed me!"
"No," Khloe cried. "Aiden, please let me explain. I was trapped… This is all Kylie Finch's fault."
"I don't buy it," Aiden sighed. "Why do you blame Kylie for everything? It was you who invited Kylie to the café yesterday, am I right?"
"You are right," Khloe admitted, "but how did you find out about that?"
"Does it matter?" Aiden wondered. "I don't think it does. I think we need to split up and go our separate ways."
"No! No! No!" Khloe cried. "You can't do that to me! You can't! You can't! I've told the media that our wedding will be held on the 18th. If we don't get married, I will be the laughingstock of Hollywood…"

The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.
