Chapter 1244: The Critical Step
Translator: Transn Editor: Transn
The roars of agony of beasts were heard continuously from the vast mountain range as blood Qi tinted the entire firmament.
A ten-thousand-mile radius had turned into a world filled with the color of blood.
Su Mo’s shadow moved continuously over the mountain range. Numerous Beast Souls struggled and bellowed as they gathered toward Su Mo.
He savagely swallowed countless Beast Souls.
“Su Mo, didn’t you say you were going to spare me some of your Soul Power?”
While Su Mo was hovering over the mountain range, the thoughts in Flaming Ghost Sage’s mind sounded in Su Mo’s mind.
He had been waiting for Su Mo to spare him some Soul Devouring Power so he could use it to aid his recovery.
“Alright, I shall spare you some!” Su Mo growled. Then, he devoured a dozen King level savage beasts and then pushed their Beast Souls toward the Flaming Ghost Sage.
In an instant, the soul power surged toward the Demonic Soul of the Flaming Ghost Sage and was completely absorbed by it.
Since the Flaming Ghost Sage was inside Su Mo’s Devouring Martial Soul, Su Mo could clearly feel that the strength of the Flaming Ghost Sage’s Demonic Soul was on its road to recovery.
Although the extent of his recovery was limited, there was still a slight improvement.
Su Mo immediately stopped feeding the Flaming Ghost Sage, lest he becomes too strong and frees himself from Su Mo’s control.
“This… Su Mo, could you give me more?” the Flaming Ghost Sage asked hopefully.
Just a little soul power had allowed him to recover as much as he would have recovered in ten years of convalescence. He would definitely be craving for more soul power!
“Be patient, predecessor. Please wait until I break through to the Martial Emperor Realm and then I will help you recover!” Su Mo said with a smile.
The Flaming Ghost Sage knew in his heart that Su Mo would never let him recover fully so it was pointless pushing him.
He could only push for a little at a time!

The Flaming Ghost Sage immediately shut his mouth and became quiet.
Su Mo continued to devour Beast Souls.
“Rumble!”
Suddenly the earth and the mountains began shaking and a gigantic lizard emerged from the forest ahead.
The lizard was greenish purple in color. Its body was over a hundred feet long and its large pupils emitted a blood-red light.
“Whoosh!”
The lizard flew into the air and dashed toward Su Mo, exuding an intense killing desire everywhere.
“Rumble!”
As the gigantic lizard approached Su Mo, it suddenly swept its tail like a long whip across the void space.
Instead of becoming fearful, Su Mo was glad as he realized that this gigantic lizard was actually an eighth-grade second level savage beast, which was equivalent to a second level martial artist in the Martial Emperor Realm.
Su Mo had been at this particular mountain range for quite some time, and this was the first time he came across an eighth-grade second level savage beast.
Then again, this mountain range was pretty massive, and he had only been going around its periphery.
“Break!” Su Mo struck with his long sword.
“Swoosh!”
An acute sword Qi tore through the air. It was so sharp that with one slash, the lizard’s tail was severed from its body.
Roar!
Instead of being intimidated because its tail was cut off, the lizard became even more ferocious. It opened its mouth wide as it attempted to bite Su Mo.
In an instant, its huge mouth, reeking of blood, came close to Su Mo.
“Go and die!” Su Mo roared. Using brute strength, he thrust his sword into the lizard’s bloody mouth.
“Pfft!”
The sword radiance flashed across the sky and then the enormous mouth of the gigantic lizard was torn and its body was cut in two. Fresh blood poured out and surged into a hundred-foot-high wave.
The Beast Soul of the lizard was immediately devoured by Su Mo.
The strength of an eighth-grade level two savage beast was far inferior to that of Liao Yunjian. The lizard was no match for Su Mo.
Su Mo hovered over the mountain range as he continued to slaughter and devour savage beasts. He did not intend to enter deep into the mountain range where there were much stronger savage beasts.

In this manner, Su Mo remained in the vast mountain range for ten days. He devoured countless Beast Souls and even the souls of some experienced martial artists who were in the midst of their cultivation in the mountain range.
Even after ten days, his Martial Soul had not progressed to Rank 9 Heaven Class. He decided to leave the mountain range and return to Tushan Town.
Ttime was running out, and he had to return. He could only hope that the others at the Firmament Palace had caught enough Beast Souls for him.
After a dozen hours, Su Mo finally reached Tushan Town. The rest of the people from the Firmament Palace had already arrived before he did.
All of them, including townsmen who did not belong to the Firmament Palace, handed the Beast Souls to Su Mo. They had managed to gather a total of over ten million Beast Souls, and all of them were at least sixth grade Beast Souls.
It was not easy to store the Beast Souls. They had to make a special trip to a big city nearby to buy a huge amount of Soul Crystals before they set out.
Su Mo was delighted to receive more than ten million Soul Crystals.
…
Inside the space in the jade bracelet.
Each Beast Soul was compressed into one Soul Crystal. The millions of Soul Crystals containing Beast Souls were heaped up in a pile.
Standing at the foot of the mountain of Soul Crystals, Su Mo wore a serious expression, fully aware that his success depended on all these Beast Souls.
“Break!”
Su Mo had a brainwave. He compressed the millions of Soul Crystals with spatial power and the Soul Crystals shattered straightaway.
Instantly, millions of Beast Souls dashed out and started roaring. The deafening roars filled the entire space.
Countless Beast Souls covered the entire heavens and earth. It was a magnificent sight.
“Devour!”
Su Mo released his Devouring Martial Soul immediately and began to devour the Beast Souls savagely.
The numerous Beast Souls cried out horrifically as they flooded into the Devouring Martial Soul.
Time trickled by.
In just a moment, ninety percent of the millions of Beast Souls were devoured by Su Mo.
His Devouring Martial Soul did not disappoint. After a violent tremor, a ninth light ring appeared on top of his head.
Rank 9 Heaven Class Martial Soul!
Finally, his Devouring Martial Soul had reached the highest possible rank.
“Ha ha!” Su Mo was so overjoyed he could not hold back his laughter.
As time passed, he finally devoured all the Beast Souls and the excitement in his heart died down.
He would now pursue the Martial Emperor Realm.
Su Mo quickly asked the Flaming Ghost Sage about things he needed to take note of in order to break through to the Martial Emperor Realm.
Although the Flaming Ghost Sage was not human, he had been through all of this before and must have a better understandingof the challenges ahead.
Su Mo learned a lot of useful information from the Flaming Ghost Sage and thus gained a better understanding of how to break through to the Martial Emperor Realm.
Without further delay, Su Mo began to try to break through.
He got rid of all distractions in his mind and concentrated on communicating with the Martial Soul using his will. He attempted to converge the Devouring Ultimacy and Spiritual Soul into his Martial Soul.
The reason Su Mo tried to combine his Devouring Ultimacy with his Martial Soul was that this was the easiest step.
The Devouring Ultimacy and the Devouring Martial Soul complemented each other well because they stemmed from the same root source一it was not difficult for them to blend together.
COMMENT
In a short span of two hours, the two combined together perfectly so that the Devouring Martial Soul was enriched with a mysterious aura and it became extremely powerful.
Following this would be the most difficult step, which was to merge it with the Spiritual Soul. If he succeeded in doing so, he would progress to the Martial Emperor Realm.
This was the most difficult and the most critical step!

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
