Chapter 11 – The Chubby Man Obviously has Fake Hair
Later that day, Xiao Daiyu sat by herself in a corner of the orphanage’s backyard. She watched as the older kids did chores and the younger ones played around the garden.
She found it strange that the orphanage didn’t have any toys besides the ones that ‘Mr. Chen’ had recently donated. She only knew him by that name after the hoodlum that kidnapped her addressed him as such, he never told her his name.
A luxurious car came into the orphanage’s parking lot, all the children stopped playing and looked towards the entrance, many hopeful that this would be their chance to get adopted. Xiao Daiyu also observed the newcomers.
A chauffeur exited the car and opened the passenger seat door. A short chubby old man with a strange, fake-looking hair and a beer belly came out with an arrogant face, as if looking down on the children.
Xiao Daiyu immediately recognized that the man had makeup on to alter the way he looked and that he was wearing a wig, it was quite an ametaur job he did.
Xiao Daiyu furrowed her brows when she saw this. Was this the person that the caretakers mentioned that morning? He didn’t look like a man who would willingly adopt a child and put the care necessary into raising them.
The caretakers immediately stopped what they were doing and went to greet him. Xiao Daiyu could barely hear them telling the man about a recent donation worth millions of dollars. Which was obviously the donation Mr. Chen had left last month.
Why were they talking about that?
Xiao Daiyu narrowed her eyes and sneaked around to follow the caretakers and chubby man.

They stopped after they reached one of the private rooms of the orphanage where the caretakers would talk to the parents in private, but left the door open. After hearing their conversation, Xiao Daiyu narrowed her eyes with distaste.
“Someone donated five million dollars!?” The chubby man’s eyes were full of greed.
“Yes, dean. The kid that the man brought with him is well behaved and doesn’t even demand much,” one of the old nannies that volunteered at the orphanage spoke up, “she tends to keep to herself but treats all the children nicely.”
“Yes, yes, that’s good,” the chubby dean replied absentmindedly, all that he could think of were the five million dollars. He had to come up with a more subtle way to keep that money.
The caretakers looked at each other with worry, it had been hard enough to get the donations to actually go into the orphanage. The money that the man donated was mostly used to feed the children. But they could do nothing against the dean, he would just dismiss them if they went against him.
“After that, someone came here once a week and donated toys, clothes, and sweets, and played with children,” a younger nanny added.
This was quite troublesome for the dean, aside from the blatant embezzlement he had another way to profit from the orphanage. He was collaborating with a ‘Sir Diu’.
‘Sir Diu’ would send couples with fake identities to the orphanage to adopt the children, at least 3 each month, but not too many so as not to arouse suspicion from the caretakers. When they were brought out of the orphanage ‘Sir Diu’ paid him for the troubles and gave him 25% of what he got from selling the children.
What happened to the children afterwards was not his problem. The nannies were happy so many of the kids were getting adopted and he was happy with his money. He got a great way to make money from the orphanage.

But this time it was different, the man that made the donation and the man that came every week were not simple and ‘Sir Du’ ordered him to ‘adopt’ a specific child, the one that the man had brought to the orphanage.
“You can go now. You know how to shut your mouths right?” The dean dismissed all them after getting the information he needed. All the nannies left in a hurry, afraid of unknowingly irritating him.
Xiao Daiyu had left in deep thought, unsure of what was going to happen.
________
“Quickly call Dr. Xu!!” Lu Ji commanded into the house as he supported Chen Feng.
Chen Feng looked miserable, drenched in blood that was unclear if it was his or his enemies’, but his face looked indifferent as he walked into the house.
They never expected that the enemy would hire an S class sniper that almost took Chen Feng’s life. Fortunately, he was only hit in the shoulder. Unfortunately, his arm would not function anymore if he did get surgery.
The house had military-style emergency kits ready. Chen Feng was brought into an operating room in no time. Lu Ji stood beside him with a solemn expression.
After the surgery, Lu Ji started bickering with Chen Feng.
“Are you an idiot?!? You’re usually so smart that even Xiao Jiao is no match for you! Why are you so distracted today?!? If not for Xiao Chu noticing something was amiss and pushing you in time do you think you would lose only your arm?!?…”
Lu Ji was the nephew of Shan Jiao and Chen Feng’s adoptive father. He was older than Chen Feng by 5 years and older than Shan Jiao by one year. They had grown up together and now worked together. Chen Feng and Shan Jiao had grown used to his constant mom-like nagging, they often called him Mom Lu.

Of Gods and Dungeons
March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.
