Chapter 26 – lovely to meet you
“Old Master, they have arrived.”
The old man immediately stood up, but he soon seemed to have changed his mind and sat down back again.
After a few seconds he stood up again and ordered the servants to get his study ready and to take the guests there.
He sat down in his chair and prepared himself for the new guest. His ungrateful son had not told him anything. He just said he had someone important to present to him. It was only thanks to his gossipy nephew, Lu Ji, that he was able to find out about his lovely new granddaughter.
He was extremely happy about such development. He had been worried about his sons as of lately, more than usual that is. After Shan He’s wife died he was not quite the same, his relationship with his son was strained and the poor child had no idea what to do. Chen Feng on the other hand, was always alone. He was worried he would die without company.
That was when there was a knock at the door. He took a moment to get himself ready, he had high expectations for this granddaughter of his.
“Come in.”
“Old Master, here are the Young Master Chen and company.”
Chen Feng and Chen Daiyu were the only ones to come in, all others were told that they could simply make themselves at home.
Chen Daiyu had no idea what to do, nobody had told her what to do when meeting grandfathers. It doesn’t matter wether she was favoured or not, as long as she made a good first impression is enough, she wanted to make the most of the opportunity she was given in this new life. If she could, she wanted a happy childhood where she didn’t have to worry about her life and death at all times.

Though she knew that would not be completely possible as long as her family was being watched by the Huo family and the president. They had to be taken down before she could completely enjoy the new life given to her.
Putting aside all her fears she stepped into the study decisively. This was her grandfather, nothing to fear.
Though when she looked up, all she saw was an old man with a terrifying aura. She could feel all the years he served and wars he went through from that alone.
She admired that. She actually liked fighting, she enjoyed all the training she was given in her past life. She was just adamant at times on what it had to be used, but she couldn’t do anything about that before she died.
Unnerved, she looked straight at him and said with a bow, “it is lovely to meet you, grandfather. My name is Chen Daiyu, can i serve you some tea?”
Shan Hui was quite pleased at first sight. She was absolutely adorable, and she did not back down from his presence. He was pretty sure he had found the successor he had been looking for.
“No need for such formalities little one, come sit with me and tell me about yourself,” he gave his son a pointed look, “we’ll talk later,” and then gave all his attention to his granddaughter.
Having been accepted, Chen Daiyu was ecstatic. She tried to keep the glee of her face as she slowly walked towards her grandfather. Once she arrived by his chair, he picked her up and put her on his lap.
Chen Daiyu was overwhelmed by his favor. Even from what Shan Yijun said, her grandfather was never this kind to anybody.
They continued to chat nonsense, while Chen Feng got glomier and glomier in the corner. He had been ignored by the two the whole time and was upset his daughter had never chatted that much with him.

Seeing his son’s jealousy, Shan Hui wanted to roll his eyes. But she still decided to show Chen Daiyu around, and tease him a little.
“Little one, let me show you around.”
They got up and he took Chen Daiyu by the hand and led her to the study’s door.
“Have you considered taking the Shan last name? You could inherit all my fortune.”
Chen Daiyu wanted to laugh at her grandfather’s shenanigans, but decided against it when she felt her dad’s gloomy aura. Even though she already knew her answer despite being surprised at the sudden question, She pouted, as if she was thinking it through, then decidedly shook her head.
“I could never grandfather, besides, shouldn’t cousin Yijun inherit your fortune?”
Shan Hui seemed as though he had just remembered he had two grandchildren, though his face soured immediately.
“That lazy grandson of mine would be lucky if he gets any of my fortune if he doesn’t work harder. It’s fine, you’re still young, you can decide again when you’re older. Let me show you to your room dear.”
In his own room, Shan Yijun sneezed and shrivered.
They arrived at the side room of the masion, Chen Daiyu was surprised, because the exterior of the room didn’t lose to any room she knew in her past life. As an agent, entering other people’s houses is her specialty.
But, when she opened the door she was even more surprised by a beautiful room. It had ceiling to floor windows and tasteful decoration. Although they didnt go full into the princess decorum there was still a feel of royalty in in every set of furniture and color chosen.
She was awestruck by the room that was bigger than even in the previous masion they stayed at.
She was stuck at the door.
“This is my room?” She was so shocked her the formality from her tone disappeared.
Shan Hui was surprised by her doubtfull look, and his heart immediately warmed. He was determined to spoil this granddaughter of his until she forgot everything she had to go through because of her horrid mother. Remebering the woman, he turned to his son. He was surprised by the look of adoration he was giving Chen Daiyu, and his doubt cleared, but they still had to talk about all of this.
“Of course it is, now go in and sleep. You must be exhausted from the traveling. I will show you around the garden tomorrow.”

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
