《Master of the System 》Chapter 126

Rachel frowned and backed away. Attacking head on clearly didn’t work. She wasn’t very proficient at ranged attacks, and if she tried to compete against the false immortal with them, her loss would come even faster than at melee range. If she adopted a turtling tactic like her opponent, nothing would happen. Was her first challenge issued to a false immortal while she was a false immortal doomed to be a loss? She had thought she could win in a battle of attrition, but the false immortal really did have an unending supply of bullets. The bullets that were fired and had missed flew back on their own. Thanks to the way the guns and the bullet were constructed, the bullets were reusable.
“If you have nothing else left, I’m going to end this now,” Bullet King said, his eyes narrowing. With a wave of his hand, a massive metal structure appeared in front of him. It was a BAR, one modified to withstand the power of a false immortal. Bullet King smoothly entered the BAR from behind, his body entering a secure cavity within the robot’s chest. The BAR’s eyes lit up, and spiritual energy surged out of it in wave, destroying the terrain while forcing Rachel back. A massive tube the size of a skyscraper extended out of the BAR’s back, and the robot grabbed it with both hands, pointing one end at Rachel. “Try not to die.”
Rachel’s brow furrowed, and she condensed a barrier made of ice in front of herself. More and more layers of ice appeared in front of the barrier, aimed towards the barrel of the massive gun Bullet King had pulled out. The giant tube lit up, a beam of pure spiritual energy condensing within. It didn’t take very long for the gun to charge, and by the time Rachel had set up her thousandth ice shield, the gun was ready to fire. There was no sound. A laser of spiritual energy spiraled out of the gun, striking the first ice shield. It was destroyed in an instant. The shot didn’t even slow down, penetrating through all of Rachel’s defenses within a second. The only thing she could do was endure it with her body. Luckily, she had strengthened her flesh with tribulation thunder. Even though she hadn’t encountered the body tribulation yet, she was already as sturdy a false immortal who had passed it.

When the light from the laser faded, all that remained was Rachel’s charred figure. Her skin was completely black, and it seemed as if her hair and clothes had been burnt away as well. If it weren’t for the fact she was moving, anyone would’ve thought she was dead. Black lightning crackled from Rachel’s body as she straightened her back, fixing her posture.
“You’re still alive?” a robotic voice asked, echoing out of the BAR. “Do you understand the difference in strength? I really don’t want to kill you. I’m sure you’ve experienced the trauma of having negative karma during your tribulation.”
A bloodred line appeared on Rachel’s charred face as she sneered. The black skin on her face slowly flaked off, revealing her original appearance underneath. “You’ve passed the tribulation of the mind.”
“And you’ve just recently ascended,” Bullet King said. “You haven’t even gathered enough spiritual energy to activate the body tribulation. It’s ten times more difficult than the tribulation you’ve received upon breaking through. Go train for a thousand years; I’ll still be around for you to challenge again when you’re ready.”
“You’re a terrible cultivator,” Rachel said. “Just because of some negative karma, you’re afraid of killing me? How did someone like you pass the tribulation of the mind?”
“I gave you a way out, presenting myself as weak in order to maintain a friendly relationship with you,” Bullet King said and sighed. “In reality, you aren’t worth the effort to kill. You’re like a mosquito. I have more important things to do than waste my time to kill you when all you can do is make me itch. Just go away; don’t bother me. I don’t enjoy bullying the weak.”
Rachel’s eyes narrowed. There was a difference between her cultivation base and her opponent’s, but she wasn’t going to use that as an excuse. When she was younger, she had defeated countless numbers of opponents who were in a realm above her, and that was before she had the perfected Moon Lotus Cultivation Technique given to her by the illusionary attacker. Speaking of which, hadn’t she unlocked a new function of the illusionary words during her tribulation? It was called a lottery, right? How did it work?

[To use the lottery, you must use ten good-deed tokens per attempt. Currently, you have three good-deed tokens. Good-deed tokens are earned by doing good deeds; however, they are also lost when performing bad deeds.]
In other words, Rachel had to do ten good deeds in a row, use the lottery attempt, and then go back to committing crimes? How inconvenient. It didn’t seem like there was enough time to do seven good deeds, so the lottery wasn’t an available option. Or…, what exactly qualified as a good deed? Rachel’s brow furrowed. “Can I borrow your bracelet?”
There was a brief silence. Then, a robotic voice came out of the BAR. “What?”
“My personal bracelet was destroyed by your attack,” Rachel said. “There’s something I need to check.”
Bullet King had no idea what was wrong with his opponent. However, he didn’t have to know what was wrong to realize her head didn’t work like normal people’s did. If he gave her a bracelet, would that be enough to make her leave him alone? Although it wouldn’t be dangerous to kill Rachel, it’d still take some time if she chose to flee. If the empire’s false immortal used that chance to attack the coalition’s capital, stealing from the treasury, the loss wouldn’t be worth it. Given how snakelike the empire’s false immortal was, Bullet King wouldn’t put it past her to do that. He placed a bracelet into a compartment, and it was shot out of a hole in the BARs forearm.
Rachel caught the bracelet and turned it on. It was a fresh bracelet with only the basics installed. With a few taps of the screen, Rachel went online and linked her bank account. Sending donations towards good causes definitely counted as good deeds, right? After donating to seven different places, Rachel asked in her mind, “How many good-deed tokens do I have now?”
[Ten. However, after this pull, the lottery system is going to be reworked. There is clearly a problem with the way good-deed tokens are obtained. Would you like to draw from the lottery right now?]
“Yes.” A wheel appeared in Rachel’s mind. It was split into different slices, each with a description of the prizes they held. Before Rachel could even read one character, the wheel spun, and the text blurred. The different prizes spun beneath the arrow, and when the wheel came to a stop, her prize was revealed! Nothing.
[Thanks for participating, please try again!]
Rachel’s expression darkened.
“Did something happen?” Bullet King asked.
“No,” Rachel said. “It’s nothing.”
Bullet King didn’t say a word. Given how wildly this woman behaved, maybe something inside of her would choose to leave him alone right now. If he spoke up, she’d remember he existed. Wait a minute. Wasn’t there an easier way to get rid of this battle maniac? “Are you still going to fight me?”
“Of course,” Rachel said.
“Follow me,” Bullet King said. “There’s a better battlefield. Also, uh, here.” He put some clothes into a compartment, and those were launched towards Rachel, who was naked. Luckily, the camera she brought to livestream with had been obliterated by the laser gun.
“A better battlefield?” Rachel’s brow furrowed. What was wrong with this one?
“You want me to fight you seriously, right?” Bullet King asked. “My attacks are too destructive. I don’t want to irradiate the planets in this solar system.” Of course, that wasn’t the real reason. Since this false immortal loved fighting, why didn’t he just drag her to the empire and have the two crazy ladies fight each other? Then, he’d just find the opportunity to leave. According to his mind that had been sharpened by a tribulation, it was a perfect plan.

Touch
Touch is a story about a boy named James, and his friends: a group of young, superpowered people brought together by trauma; all trying, in their own ways, to come to terms with what that trauma means to them and who they want to be in response to it. This is a learning process, and mistakes are made, but they grow, learn, and adapt to these difficulties in ways that some might say only young people can. While it may look it at first, this is not intended as a sad story, merely an honest one. I wanted to make the characters human, and unfortunately, that means that difficulties hit them in very real ways through the story, but then again, they have some equally human moments of warmth between one another as they grow. Triggers: Explores the aftereffects and recovery process of sexual abuse, and some other forms of physical abuse. I like to think I avoided making it edgy, but you deserve to be informed. Some readers have told me that it can feel a bit too real at times. A bit too honest. If you like what you read, feel free to comment or review. I like the feedback.
