In a time not so far from our own, in a city not so far from you, strange things are happening. Deaths, monsters, mysterious and poetic final letters, madness, machinated abominations... Is this all the result of one conspiracy? Or, has this gauntlet been wrought by a collective, unconcious desire for danger, a feral and instinctual life in the food chain? What is happening? What, if anything should we do to stop it? Who will rise in these times, who will crumble, and who will even notice a difference? This is but one of my Serial Experiments in fiction writing.

[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] "You have to survive, Adam. You have to win." This is not a story starring Mary, because Mary is already dead. She bled out on her front doorstep following a sudden three-day absence. Seven years have passed, with her little brother—Adam—now standing at eighteen years of age. Following his sister's death, he lived the life of a delinquent, wandering the grimy streets of the city of Steeldale. All it amounted to was years of street fighting experience, no proper home and an uncertain future at a second-rate university. Unbeknowst to him, the day before university, he will be thrust from Steeldale into a brand new world. It is a world where a cherry red sky gazes down upon a fragmented continent, on which civilisations from other worlds have been dumped like refuse. The souls of man leak from their fingertips, coalescencing into superhuman powers and horrible fleshy monstrosities. Tribes of refugees clash against each other, attempting to carve out a place in this unrefined space. With no choice, Adam must traverse this dangerous new world, with Mary's shadow following him every step of the way. This is my entry to the April 2021 Writathon. Arden, planet of a billion souls, has been destroyed. A solar body, known only as The Dark Star collided with the world, shattering it. Through the actions of ancient heroes, and the sacrifice of the Gods, life found a way. Floating through the black sea of space, orbiting the destructive beauty of The Dark Star is Shatter, a coalition of continental rocks, surviving as best they can. Through magic and technological advancements, the fractured remnants of the planet have been made halfway habitable. In addition to shattering the prime material plane of Arden, The Dark Star’s destructive force also fractured the planar system, collapsing ancient barriers and forcing the wild elemental and chaotic magics of the planes into conjunction. The Kingfisher, helmed by the enigmatic and powerful Captain Thunder and her miscreant crew, do odd jobs to survive, operating outside of the law. One such job takes them to the shard of Evergreen, a fragment of planet covered in brilliant forests and the capricious and deadly faerie folk who call them home. Unfortunately, while the job seems simple enough from the outside, it quickly embroils the crew of the Kingfisher in a dangerous storm. Can Thunder and her crew keep to the sidelines when war is brewing around them?
