《Start With Contracting Sprites》Chapter 180: Can't Bring It Along

"Garden! Garden!"
The Vine Demon waved the vines that grew flowers.
"You said that you don't know most of the materials, then…"
Lin Xueguang looked into the distance. Su Hao's Reverie Butterfly had already chosen the materials and was flying back.
At this moment, most people had just walked onto the platform.
What exactly was wrong?
He couldn't help but fall into deep thought.
...
In the evolution of Sickle Crab, the outer shell made of metal was an essential material.
There were quite a lot of preparations on the storage rack. Any Sprite Cultivator or ordinary person who had some understanding would understand.
"The evolution plan adopted by most students is still too rigid."
A Sprite Cultivator spoke.
The other person nodded and said, "Although they seem to have chosen a lot of materials other than necessary, they are all just raw materials. They don't know how to selectively increase and reduce materials according to the specific situation and development of the sprite!"
"In my opinion, more than 95% of people are unqualified!"
"Don't say that. They are still young. Experience needs to be accumulated… I think Dragon Nation's Li Hongzhuo is pretty good. That paper published a year ago is interesting. His foundation is also very solid. In just one or two minutes, he already has a concrete plan… Eh!"
The Sprite Cultivator who spoke looked at one of the platforms.
The one setting up the evolution field was actually a sprite.
"He's commanding the sprites to set up, and… he even made special arrangements for the materials."
...
"Two, three, four pairs."
Su Hao waved the map in his hand.
He had just drawn them and marked the positions where each material needed to be placed.
He was still imparting experience to Die Xiaodie. "The placement of materials is very particular. The closer it is to a sprite, the easier it is to absorb the spirituality…"
"Also, you have to crush the Iron Bamboo Leaf with your mind power and scatter the powder evenly on the metal shell. This can allow the Sickle Crab to better fuse the spirituality of the two materials together during the absorption process…"
Su Hao said one sentence after another.
With an assistant like Die Xiaodie, it was indeed much easier.
Breaking Psychic power was more effective than many instruments, and it could save him a lot of effort.
This Butterfly Xiao Die was indeed a master.

"From now on, you're a mature Sprite Care Butterfly."
Butterfly: "???"
But it thought about it again and felt that since sprites already had ID cards, then after taking the Sprite Cultivator license, getting a fixed allowance every month should also be… very normal, right?
It asked, "Gurgle?"
Su Hao was stunned. After thinking for a while, he said, "This suggestion… isn't bad."
...
Su Hao's Butterfly Xiao Die used 30 seconds to set up the evolution field.
Looking at the decoration methods alone, it was even more particular than when the little rascal and Flaming Cloud Crow evolved.
The materials couldn't be compared.
They were all ordinary materials. The most valuable ones were the three elemental essences.
Su Hao opened the box containing water-element essence. Under the control of Reverie Butterfly's Psychic power, he directly poured it into the Sickle Crab's mouth.
The next moment…
Without needing his reminder, the Sickle Crab instinctively circulated the spiritual force in its body.
Water-blue threads formed around its body, wrapping it into a light cocoon.
The Sickle Crab in the light cocoon was using all its strength to absorb the spirituality of the surrounding materials.
"Someone's sprite is evolving!"
"So fast?!"
Many contestants became anxious.
Just like during the exam, when he only finished half of his paper, the others had already handed in their papers and left.
He couldn't stay calm anymore!
Three minutes.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes passed. The spiritual energy in Water Pool Hall surged, and the spiritual energy released by the spiritual jades was absorbed by the sprites.
Looking around, there were blue light cocoons of different sizes.
It was especially spectacular.
About 20 minutes later…
Bang!
The light cocoons that had first evolved broke through one after another.
Su Hao looked over. The Sickle Crab, which was about the size of a backpack, had already changed greatly.
It evolved into a Armored Crab, the size of a 22-inch suitcase.
The way they looked at Su Hao had already become very intimate.
It could be hooked away with just a finger.
But he was ugly.
"Overall, it's still an underdeveloped Armored Crab, but its improvement is already not small. After breaking through to entry level, its spiritual force also increased to 112 points."
It seemed like a very insignificant improvement from 100 to 112, but actually…
It was indeed very insignificant.
After all, it was limited by the materials.

Raising 12 points in one go was already Su Hao's limit.
No matter how high it was, he had to unlock the perfect evolution plan of the Sickle Crab with Intelligence Points from the interface.
It would be too wasteful.
There was no need.
"After all, we aren't much worse than the interface."
...
In Water Pool Hall, blue light cocoons shattered, revealing the sprites inside.
Some were happy.
Some were disappointed.
"The breakthrough failed."
"Impossible, how can it fail? I've already completed the Little Seashell's evolution dozens of times, how can it fail?!"
"There's definitely no problem with my arrangements. It must be that sprite's fault. What kind of problem sprites are the organizers providing!?"
There were basic standards for contestants who could represent the school to participate in the Sprite Care Cup.
None of the evolution of more than a hundred sprites failed, but very few could break through to entry level.
The ratio was less than 10%.
The reason for sprites' poor development was because of this.
This was also the reason why the materials were restricted.
But after all…
The difference was obvious.
Su Hao got Butterfly to fly higher and observe the surroundings with Sprite Commandeering: Visual Sharing.
Before long, he found the others from Whale Island University.
It looked a little worried.
Only he, Lin Xueguang, and the freckled girl successfully made their sprites break through to entry level.
All five contestants from Dragon City University successfully made their sprites break through.
"For a competition like the Sprite Care Cup, I keep feeling like I can't bring it along."
Su Hao pondered.
At this moment, a staff member held a loudspeaker and shouted for the contestants to bring their sprites to the testing point.
There were ordinary unique skill power testing machines placed there.
The Armored Crab rushed up and used a few unique skills.
"112!"
"111!"
"112!"
"Results: Excellent!" A staff member at the side recorded.
There were also sprites who couldn't break through to entry level. When their unique skills hit the target, they had no power at all.
"55!"
"Results: Qualified!"
Qualified, intermediate, good, and outstanding were the four ratings of the regular season.
Scores ranged from 1 to 4.
Most of them were representatives of ordinary high schools, and their total team scores were only 5 to 7.
Whale Island University's team total score was 15 points.
However, Dragon City University had 19 marks, only one point away from full marks.
"It's alright, barely second place."
In the afternoon.
The theme of the regular season was "jade powder set meal". The contestants needed to mix jade powder and feed it to their sprites. In the end, the sprites' spiritual force recovery rate would be calculated in the duration.
Whale Island University's team scored 16 points, one more point than in the morning.
And Dragon City University still got 19 marks.
After two rounds of the regular season, Dragon City University maintained first place with a huge advantage of 38 points.
Whale Island University, 31 marks, second place.
Black Dragon University 29 points, third place.
Fiery Bird University 28 points, fourth place.
Green Mountain Sprite University, 28 points, fifth place.
...
Su Hao mourned for Fiery Bird University for half a second.
But then he remembered that he couldn't bring his teammates along, and couldn't help but mourn for himself for another three seconds.
The team results seemed to affect the bonus!
"Gurgle~"
Reverie Butterfly also lowered its head.
It really wanted to take down a team member.
"This result is already pretty good."
Master Yao said with a smile.
He was very satisfied, but Silkworm Baby had it rough.
Especially Su Hao, who was even more outstanding than he had expected. As long as he learned from him for a year or two, he could totally become a high-level Sprite Cultivator who could take charge of a field alone and had the ability to manage a laboratory.
That was the biggest gain of the Sprite Care Cup!
He could tell that Su Hao was a little depressed, so he comforted him. "The Sprite Cultivation level of Dragon City University has always been the top in the country. It's normal to lose to them, but you're still young, just a first-year student. There's still a chance to surpass them in the next batch."
As for the "defense match" tomorrow, Master Yao didn't mention it.
The questions in the defense competition were too high-end. Among the students, even advanced Sprite Cultivators found it difficult to participate.
Some outstanding representatives might be able to symbolically score 2 to 3 points.
It was impossible to go against Dragon City University.
Su Hao also knew.
He sighed with Die Xiaodie.
"I'm good at both subjects of the regular season. I can't bring my teammates with me, let alone tomorrow. It's good enough that I can understand."

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
