《Start With Contracting Sprites》Chapter 192: Fire Crow Dance! (First Update)

Defense assessment examination hall.
The whole examination hall was built underground. It looked as if it was surrounded by a thick wall. On the surrounding walls, there were openings, with black cannon barrels sticking out, looking scary.
"Damn! Our sprites won't be blasted into pieces, right?!"
Standing at the top of the examination hall, looking down closely against the glass wall, many students let out Liu Ren-style screams.
Instructor Sun Gaoang coughed. After lowering the students' voices, he explained again,
"Those cannon barrels can blast out Energy Balls… Attributeless Energy Balls."
"What your sprites need to do is to stay in the middle of the examination hall and resist the attacks of Energy Balls from all directions…"
He pointed to the red circle at the bottom, the center area. "The assessment tests the sprite's ability to resist attacks, not dodge. Therefore, your sprite can only stay in the red circle, its feet can't leave the ground."
He added, "You can't damage the examination hall facilities."
At this moment.
Liu Ren asked weakly, "Instructor, what if the sprite is larger than the red circle?"
Instructor Sun Gaoang :"…"
"Roughly that size is fine!"
He skipped over this question and continued, "The output power and quantity of Energy Balls in the examination hall will gradually increase over time…"
"To be able to last 30 seconds is considered a pass."
"It can last for more than 40 seconds. It's a C rating."
"It can last more than 50 seconds, B…"
"It can last for more than 60 seconds…"
After Instructor Sun Gaoang finished his explanation, the instructor whose name Liu Ren also couldn't name swept his gaze across the candidates from Lakeview Court, paused, and said,
"Today's assessment will be done in the order of drawing lots…"
He took out a small computer and pressed it. Countless headshots flashed on it. A second or two later.
Stare—
A pancake face appeared.
"The first is Liu Ren."
Pancake's face was filled with surprise.
But Liu Ren didn't panic. Resistance assessment was the one he… his Master Tortoise was most confident in.
Liu Ren walked down the elevator and summoned the Lava Dragon Turtle, which was the size of a two to three-storey tall building.
Once it stood there, the red circle immediately disappeared.
A moment later, Liu Ren returned to the top.
The instructor whom he couldn't name didn't take out the familiar timer today. Instead, he went to the control panel and started setting it up.
Then, he pressed the start button.
In that instant…
There was a buzz.
On the surrounding walls, light dots started gathering at the front ends of the few cannon barrels in a circle.

After accumulating, a few Energy Balls blasted straight at the Lava Dragon Turtle in the center.
A red barrier also appeared on the surface of the Lava Dragon Turtle's body.
Flame Shield!
Bang~!
The Energy Ball hit it and exploded.
Ripples appeared on the red shield, but it was still intact.
The surrounding cannon muzzles continued to gather energy, while the Lava Dragon Turtle was also stabilizing the strength of its Flame Shield.
Time passed second by second.
Su Hao saw that more and more cannon muzzles started to accumulate energy.
The energy contained in the Energy Balls that flew out became increasingly terrifying.
"The attack intensity has increased from entry-level to intermediate entry-level and advanced-level."
It was a series of attacks from various angles.
Even an elite would die if they were careless.
It was the 30th second.
At the center of the circle, the front ends of more than ten cannon barrels started to gather energy.
Energy balls hit the Flame Shield and exploded.
The noises of destruction were not stopping.
The red light shield was like a candle in the wind, its color became much fainter, shaking intensely.
40 seconds…
The rumbling became increasingly intense.
The Lava Dragon Turtle's Flame Shield had long been broken.
At this point, it had completely retreated into the tortoise shell. The huge tortoise shell was filled with light representing fire-element spiritual force, resisting the attacks from the Energy Balls from all directions.
The 50th second…
The Energy Balls flying in mid-air were densely packed. Every one of them contained energy comparable to the accumulation of elite-level sprites.
They exploded with booms, blasting the huge tortoise shell until it shook violently, as if it was going to flip it over!
Suddenly…
All the cannon barrels that were accumulating energy suddenly stopped.
There seemed to be equipment to monitor the sprite state in the whole examination hall.
It discovered that the Lava Dragon Turtle had reached its limit.
"Time: 51 seconds 22, rating 'B-'."
The instructor reported the results.
Liu Ren ran to the ground above the examination hall, summoned the Lava Dragon Turtle, and handed it to the school's medical team.
...
Liu Ren, whose name was unknown, achieved good 'B-' results, but it didn't bring confidence to others.
Energy balls came from all directions.
Thunderous explosions erupted.
And the trembling ground…
Everything indicated that the defense assessment… was so damn difficult!
There were also various conditions and restrictions!
It was simply too difficult!
...
"Zhong Yixiang, rating 'C-'."
"Ran Wenlin, rating 'C'."
"Song Jiaxi, disqualified."
"Yang Tu, rating 'D'."
"Suo Shiting, disqualified."
"Duan Wan, rating 'D'."
...
"Bai Hongzhen, rating 'B-'."
...
"Gu Lingyao, rating 'C-'."
...
Defense assessment produced more disqualifications and D grades than the previous two assessments.

"From the looks of it, apart from those sprites who are naturally good at defense, the other students don't pay much attention to the defense training of sprites."
Instructor Sun Gaoang said.
The other instructors nodded. "Perhaps it's because most students stay in school most of the time and are safe. Taking on one or two wanted missions occasionally isn't too difficult for them either… They don't attach much importance to their ability to defend."
"Next semester, after the New World collective training starts, they won't think so."
A sprite with enough defense could protect not only itself, but also Sprite Trainers.
Sprite Trainers were the core of the team.
Whether it was the speed assessment or defense assessment, in fact, they were all closely related to life-saving.
"Up till now, the person with the highest rating is actually only a 'B'."
"Next, Su Hao."
The instructors all cast their expectant gazes at "Number One Freshman" Su Hao.
The students also looked over.
A handsome Fire Crow flew down from the entrance. Everyone was stunned when they saw the situation.
"Are you sure that the sprite going on the field is the Flaming Spiritcrow?"
Instructor Sun Gaoang frowned. He walked over to confirm it himself.
He understood Su Hao's Flaming Spiritcrow.
He knew that it was a Fire Crow with a slightly… special battle style.
It was good at close combat.
But it had nothing to do with defense, right?
He reminded him again, "You can't damage the surrounding cannon barrels or fly."
Su Hao nodded, indicating that he understood.
In the center of the field, the red circle was about two to three meters in diameter.
Butterfly, who was good at microoperation, dodging, and was small in size, had the ability to dance and dodge freely in such a range.
But the range of the explosion of the Energy Ball and the aftershock was very wide.
Relying solely on dodging would also result in high intensity explosive damage… So one could only resist!
It relied on the sprite itself or its display of various unique skills to defend.
As for the Flaming Spiritcrow…
Even with the Flame Shield, it could withstand a few rounds.
But after he took a look, Su Hao didn't feel like he lost his mind, so he didn't ask anymore.
...
The Flaming Spiritcrow landed in the center of the field and shook its wings.
When the time came, several cannon barrels on the surrounding walls started to gather energy light dots.
A moment later, a few Energy Balls flew out.
"Squawk…"
It glanced and raised its right wing.
Steel Wings!
Flaming Feather!
Wing Attack!
Red feathers appeared layer by layer, extending from the tip of its wings like a long and narrow red scimitar.
It waved casually.
Slash—
The feather blade drew an arc.
A few Energy Balls that flew over were cut open a few meters away from it.
Bang, bang, bang, bang.
In the blink of an eye…
"It's going to be 30 seconds!" An instructor stared down. "How is it going to deal with it? After 30 seconds, even the aftershock will have very strong destructive power."
Before he finished speaking, he saw countless cannon muzzles blasting out Energy Balls.
More than ten Energy Balls flew over from all directions.
In that instant…
"Squawk…"
With a cry, circles of red light surrounded the Flaming Spiritcrow.
Translucent red feathers covered its body like a coat, extending all the way to the Feather Blade.
It was as if the feather knives were covered with blade aura, stretching the length of the two feather knives forward.
The Flaming Spiritcrow's eyes became focused.
It raised two blades.
Left Wing Slash.
Right wing slash.
The left side formed a circle.
Flames filled the sky on the right.
Time seemed to have stopped.
All the Energy Balls were cut into two when they were a few meters away from it.
They exploded in mid-air.
The violent aftershock swept out like strong wind, and the scattered energy streams poured down…
Wave after wave hit the Flaming Spiritcrow.
But it didn't even shake!
It was very difficult for the Flaming Feather Gown to resist the frontal impact, but just the aftershock, the aftershock just a few meters away…
It couldn't hurt it with its Fire Feather Gown, Steel Wings, and Wing Attack!
As long as it could intercept all the Energy Balls!
Rumble~!
The explosions became increasingly intense.
As far as the eye could see, the Energy Balls were densely packed, like a heavy rain.
All the fatal raindrops were directed at the Flaming Spiritcrow in the center!
At this moment…
The Flaming Spiritcrow was draped in an orange coat of feathers. When its feet stepped on the ground, it only moved within a square inch.
Its eyes were sharp.
The two red scimitars slashed continuously, leaving countless hot lines in the air.
Its slashing speed became faster and faster.
Five slashes in a second!
Nine slashes in a second!
Thirteen slashes per second!
Slash, slash, slash!
It slashed onto every Energy Ball!
Explosion!
Attack!
Energy surged like huge waves.
However, there was a red figure in the huge wave, waving its saber, leaving countless dazzling saber lights.
Flaming Spiritcrow's Dance!
After a long time…
It seemed like only an instant had passed.
The cannons stopped firing.
There was still dead silence outside the arena.
After a long while, someone swallowed his saliva first before the instructor regained his senses and looked at the control panel.
After a pause, he finally said,
"Time, 69 seconds, rating 'A+'!!!"
There was an uproar.

How to raise a Hive Queen
This story is about a newborn Hive Queen, which gets raised in an unexpected environment. The first part of the story will focus on her development and the challenges that come with it. Eventually she will start to produce her own swarm of hive creatures. The species of the Hive Queen is called the Sylv and they are a insectoid species with an hive mind. The Sylv can evolve themselves through extracting traits from other non Sylv creatures. This is limited to modify the basic set of creatures the Sylv can produce, they are not able to create completely new creatures. In this regard they are more like ants, who have workers, soldiers and queen ants. The Sylv live underground in so called hive complexes and use living structures in them to produce more of their kind. The Hive Queen is the leader of a Sylv Hive and responsible for evolving the swarm. This novel takes place in a fantasy setting and was inspired by other hive species like the Zerg from "Starcraft" made by Blizzard Entertainment, the Arachnea from "Her majesty's swarm" published on j-novel club, and the Vex from "I don't want to be the Hive Queen" by ValetheHowl. I really enjoy stories with an organic hive mind species and want to contribute myself. The focus and theme of this story will change as the Hive Queen matures and defines the goals she wants to achieve. If you like this story also check out my other fiction "To former Glory" here on Royal Road :D
