Even though she was a math and military major she had to take a bunch of non-degree related classes. She learned about the Earth empire and its fall after the war with the second alien interstellar species that humans had come across. Earth had been a battleground for many years as both species fought over the planet with the humans finally winning. The butcher bill for the planet was steep with many of Earth's old colonies paying the steep price while the rich citizens of Earth hid out in server farms safe in their digital world.

The worst of it was how the empire treated its digital soldiers. They were given the best of the best weapons and skills but then they were shelved in data storage devices until they were needed. They were used like programs released to fight then turned off when they were not needed. Their memories modified or in a lot of cases erased when they became too unstable. Any soldier that show any signs of being unstable and who were not ‘fixed’ by altering or deleting memories were erased. Because the horrors of what the soldiers were exposed to, laws were made so that digital soldiers had rights that no one could take away.

That digital world that ended when a human terrorist bomb took out the servers killing billions of rich citizens of the old empire including all the political leaders of the empire. Freya knew only a little bit of Earth history during the war and was horrified at what the citizens of her home planet had done.
