《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》Not Forgotten - Part 036

Elysif and I continued following the magic compass through the city of London. However, every now and then it would act up and start spinning like crazy. This made us think we were right on top of Erin but then it would start pointing somewhere else. It was as if it had to reload or had lost signal. I swear this magic tool was basically a shitty GPS from the early 2000’s.
In the end we were making progress but at a very slow rate. Eventually we got tired of walking and found us a place to eat around six. It was already dark out and we weren’t sure how close we were actually getting. The damn thing only gave us a direction, not the distance. For all we knew he could have taken the train out of the city.
We didn’t exactly give up but we felt like we should if we ended up at the edge of the city and it still wanted us to go further. At that point we would just put out a bounty on him through the Agency and someone else would have to find him. However, Elysif was certain that he hadn’t left the city yet and if he had then he wouldn’t have gone too far away.
“So what do you think?” I asked before taking a bite out of my scalloped potatoes.
“About the food or the mission?” Elysif replied after taking a bite out of a chicken leg.
“Both I guess.”
“The food is good but could use some more spices and if we don’t find Erin by tonight then we need to lie to Scott and say he left the city. We can find him during our normal rounds later.”
“Do you really think he’ll try and kill Erin?”

“Despite what others say I don’t believe he would do that. I think he may try to do something stupid like giving Erin his life as retribution.”
“Well that’s a surprise. From everything I’ve heard from both him and others he hats werewolves with a burning passion.”
“He does but he also hates himself for what he did to them. We’ve been over this before. He may act like he wants them all to die because he does have some resentment for what they did to Silva but really he’s just afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That he’ll do something worse than he did the last time. He wants to fix what’s he’s done somehow but has always thought that if he did then they would believe him to be a coward and dishonoring their dead.”
“Why would he think that?”
“Because in Lycanthrope culture they believe that they should protect each other and if they can’t then they are too weak to be considered one of them. Scott defeated everyone who protected his wife's killers and in the process killed many defenseless children. They see it as weakness among the werewolves of London and thus they will not interfere.”
“That still doesn’t explain why it would dishonor them or be considered cowardly.”
“It’s because they all died fighting. The warriors code among them states that those who fight on the battlefield do so out of choice. To attempt to repay a warriors sacrifice to them is saying that they die for no reason. The one who killed them must instead live with the lives they have taken no matter how much they regret it out of respect for them.”
“So basically if he were to openly make a gesture of apology for their deaths to another werewolf it would make it seem like they died for no reason?”

“Exactly, now are you going to eat your chicken or not?”
“I am but if you’re that hungry you can have my stewed carrots.”
“You are evil.” she said as she quickly grabbed the chicken leg anyways and started eating it.”
“Hey! You’re an ass.”
“If you’re nice to me you just might see it.”
“I would rather not right now so give me back that leg you thieving witch.”
“Not a chance.” she replied with a mouth full of chicken.
Eventually I just ordered another couple of chicken legs and gave up on the selfish girl in front of me. She ended up stealing more of my food by the time we had left but I didn’t care. I used the money from her wallet to pay for that extra chicken anyways. She really needs to keep a better eye on her wallet since I picked it from her so easily and I am terrible at it.

Virtuous Sons
The saying goes that when a man is born the Fates weave his destiny and swaddle him in it. Then one day the man dies, and the swaddle becomes a shroud. Heaven moves on. It is audacity to question the Fates. Olympus is Olympus. The land of men is the land of men. To transgress that, to cross the line of divinity and scale Olympus Mons? To defy the Fates and cast off their threads? That is hubris. It’s a mark that every philosopher bears plainly on their soul. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
