《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》Witch Trials - Part 043

Compton sat in his seat trying to take in what was just said. Mordred just ended up shaking her head in disbelief before sitting down as well. I knew it would shake him up but I didn’t think he would be this distraught by it. Around a minute later he finally said something.
“Does Scott know?” He asked.
“No.” I replied.
“How long have you two known?” he asked again.
“I’ve known for about three weeks and Mordred has known for a little over a week.” I answered.
“I’m guessing that she asked you not to tell Scott then?”
“Yes, she wanted to talk to him herself once this was all over.”
“Once what was over?” he asked.
“She’s working for the Masked Man and has been since before she met you or Scott apparently. We aren’t exactly sure what it is that she’s after but we are certain that she is fighting against the Agency.” Mordred piped in.
“Oh… do you know when this is all going to happen?”
“We aren’t sure. However, I have an idea that it will be soon considering that the Masked Man has been exposed to possibly be Lou here.” Mordred stated.
“Okay, I’m confused. Is she working for Lou, or the Masked Man, or both?” Compton said.
“Iscarat explained that Lou is possibly the Masked Man before he killed my father. Silva is working for the Masked Man after he killed my father. We have the old Masked Man in custody in the present while the older Masked Man was in the past. Wait! That doesn’t make much sense either. Great now I’m getting a headache. “Mordred said before grabbing her forehead.
“Don’t try to think about it too much.” I said.

“Whatever, just shut up and let’s try and get some sleep. Do you mind taking the first watch, Compton?” she asked.
“Not at all.” he replied. As soon as he answered she rolled to the side of her seat and fell asleep.
It got quiet again after that. Compton didn’t say a word to me and Mordred was fast asleep. The only sound I could hear was the rattling of the train. I didn’t like it and I didn’t like the idea of me possibly causing so much pain. At this point I knew I had no issue killing someone if I believed it was justified but I doubt I could kill her father like she said I did. Wait, actually I’m probably petty enough to stab someone on a whim. It’s very possible that I may have killed her father. Fuck.
When we finally arrived at Warwick it was around midday and people were bustling about despite the size of the city. Mordred rushed us to the castle where we were easily let in. the moment someone saw my mask the rumors started like wildfire. By the time we got to the main room Merlin had already been called to see what the commotion was. Strangely he didn’t seem surprised to see Mordred walking in with the Masked Man.
“I assume that everything went better than expected?” Merlin asked as he walked up to us.
“Wrong.” Mordred replied.
“How so? You have the Masked Man in your custody so I assume that you defeated Medea and captured the Masked Man like you intended. That is what we agreed would be the plan if you took all of the prisoners.” Merlin said.
“That was the plan. However, this isn’t the Masked Man but Lou Barret. Medea escaped with the Masked Man who was revealed to be Lou Barret from the future.” She explained.

“So… did the ritual work? I’m confused.” Merlin said as he scratched his head while trying to figure out how that worked.
“The ritual worked but all the time god did was give her his mask since he wasn’t dead.” Mordred said.
“So what do you want me to do then?” he asked, still confused.
“I want to put Lou Barret on trial for his crimes as the Masked Man.” she said sternly.
“I told you that I haven’t committed any crimes yet!” I interjected.
“Are you sure that he is the Masked Man?” Merlin asked.
“Yes.”
“Then a trial will be held. Compton, you will defend him and I’ll be the judge. I want everyone else out of this room until further notice!” he said. Everyone that wasn’t Mordred, Merlin, Compton, and I left the room quickly and every hallway suddenly closed despite me not seeing any doors there before. The room was completely quiet now and Merlin sat down at a small table in the center of the room which we all sat around as well.

If you enjoy LITRPG stories with morally gray characters, high stakes, and smart protagonists who start weak and eventually become powerful in a unique way, you’ll probably find something to like. But be forewarned. It won’t be easy. I'll be writing this fast, so keep in mind there's likely to be typos that we'll correct as we go. Developmental Editing by Lev.
