《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》War - Part 008

Before I knew it I was sneaking through the woods with a few of the knights of the Round Table. One being Lancelot, and one of the others being Gwaine. I had forgotten to tell Medea that I would be leaving for the night but Lily was with her so I was sure it would be fine. Having said that, I wished I was back at camp with them. The woods were dark as the only light we had was from the moon. The sound of us wandering through the woods mixed with that of the sounds of the night life and made us seem to fit in with them.

Despite any impressions I had of Lancelot and Gwaine being at each other's throats all the time like when I first met them, I was starting to think that maybe they were just a bit pent up at the time. From that time they drank together in the dinning hall to now they seemed to get along fairly well. Because right now they acted as one unit. Neither doubting the other nor being at odds with each other.

The few of us that were part of the surprise attack had been sneaking through the woods for nearly an hour before we saw what the scouts had before us. A large tree had been cut down and laid across the road. Even if it wasn’t for an ambush it would have still delayed our caravan for a while. In the woods beside it and behind it were warriors all armed with ready to fire crossbows. Thankfully, most of them were asleep so with a minor amount of direction from Lancelot we all split up. Each of us snuck around to where their watchmen were resting and got behind each one.

I drew my knife and got up behind the watchmen who was leaning against a tree. Creeping as best I could as to not let the leaves below me crunch beneath my feet. I slammed my hand over his mouth and stabbed the knife into his back. He attempted to gasp due to the knife knocking the air from his lungs but all that came from his mouth was muffled sucking noise. Lowering him to the ground I realized that there was a second watchman not two meters away from me. Before I could move he noticed me and began to yell out as he raised his crossbow at me. Though, before any nose could come from his mouth he was pierced through the neck by a hardened stream of blood.

“Thanks, Elysif.” I whispered into the pendant before beginning the next part of the plan.

Going from each sleeping warrior to the next I began slitting their throats. The sound of men choking on their blood as it filled their esophagus echoed through the air. I wasn’t necessarily shocked by any of it nor was I compelled to feel bad about what I did for some reason. My lack of conscious worried me as I didn’t know whether I was just growing accustomed to killing or if it was just part of who I was now. Either way, it didn’t feel normal to feel so normal about killing.

After I had made sure that everyone in my area was dead I walked out into the road where my fellow knights were already waiting. Gwaine, though, had a prisoner. Tied up like he was luggage to be toted back and not looking too happy about it.

“Gwaine, who is this?” Lancelot asked.

“The leader of this company. I figured we could use him to figure out what we’re walking into.” Gwaine replied with a bright smile.

“Okay, but why is he tied up like he’s going on your saddlebag?” Lancelot asked with a look of curiosity and disgust.

“I figure it would be easier to carry him back if he was tied like this. Plus, if he doesn’t talk we can just tie him to the belly of one of the studs until we arrive at the fort.” Gwaine said with a sadistic smile. The tied up man instantly began wriggling around in an attempt to break free. With his vain attempt he released several long muffled screams for help through his gag.

“We aren’t doing that. It just isn’t right.” Lancelot sighed which eased the tied up man.

“I know. I just figured we could scare him a bit.” Gwaine said before dropping the tied up man on the ground with a thud.

“Should we walk back then?” I asked.

“We could but it would probably be better if we just waited here for the rest of the camp. Our horses will be less tired if we stay here. Though, I don’t really want to stay anywhere near all these corpses.” Gwaine said.

“Go back to the camp and tell them that we’ll be taking care of clean up so that the camp can pass through without problems.” Lancelot said to the one knight who I didn’t know. He instantly nodded and began walking back down the road to the camp.

“So what now?” I asked.

“Simple, we loot the bodies and burn the corpses. We’ll also have to move this tree here.” Gwaine said with an exasperated sigh.

“Great, so no sleep for us tonight?” I asked with a defeated sigh.

“I told you that we wouldn’t be sleeping much. Now start getting the bodies.” Gwaine said before walking off.

Doing as he said I began grabbing the corpses of those I had killed. Any crossbows or crossbow bolts that I found I dropped into the pendant along with gold and booze. There were some small rations among them but nothing good. The bodies were all piled up near the road in a pile where Gwaine set them on fire using some lamp oil. The tree was a different story though. The trunk was nearly as wide as I was tall and weighed a ton. Lancelot used the axe that we assumed the warriors used to chop it down and began cutting it into small pieces for me and Gwaine to roll away but after getting half of the road cleared the axe broke. Thus, he began using his sword to chop the tree. It wasn’t nearly as effective but it worked.
