《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》War - Part 023

After falling down what felt like two flights of stairs I slammed into the dirt below with a thud and a long groan. My body felt like gelatin from fighting so much as well as riding all night. I was tired and I was not obligated to defend Camelot so I could just go to sleep right here. Plus, it felt nice. The dirt was nice. Everything was fine.
“Here, take this.” I heard Compton say from inside the pendant before a loaded crossbow that we looted from the Saxon’s appeared in front of me. I let out an annoyed groan before getting up, picking the crossbow up and marching up the stairs.
“What am I supposed to do with this?” I asked as I trudged up the stairs.
“Dullahan are rare creatures that can only be killed with silver, gold, or by dousing their flames. Since we don’t have any water around I replaced the tip of the bolt with silver. Pierce it’s chest and it should die within a few minutes.” Compton explained.
“I wish I had known that a few minutes ago.” I said with a sigh.
“You didn’t ask a few minutes ago. Though after seeing you get your ass kicked down a flight of stairs I thought you should know.” he replied with more sass than I wanted to hear.
“Thanks I guess.” I said just as I crested the stone balcony. The dullahan was busy beating the door with his sword to notice me so I aimed and released the crossbow bolt at it’s back. The initial strike of the bolt made the dullahan jolt as if he was having a seizure before he began shrieking like a banshee. Turning around the dullahan charged at me. His body burst completely into flames as if he was a demon making it impossible for me to get close to him. Instead of facing him I just began running down the stairs knowing that he would die soon.

As the dullahan charged down the stairs after me it tumbled and began falling down the stairs before slamming into the dirt and its armor went limp. The flames quickly died down, especially since I was kicking dirt onto it like an elephant taking a dust bath so that it would go out faster.
“That worked out I guess.” I said to myself before marching up the stairs for the third time. Giving the door a firm set of knocks followed by me calling out for them to open it in a very tired and annoyed tone the knights on the other side finally opened the door. Going inside they barred the door behind me.
“Which way did Gwaine go?” I asked.
“He headed off to the western door to help SIr Mordred fight the Saxon’s off.” one of the knights said. Just as he did, a crossbow bolt struck the knight's head. The bolt stabbed from one end of his head to the other making him fall dead against the door. Turning to see where the bolt came from I drew my knife and threw it down the hall. Sure enough it struck a Saxon in the shoulder and he fell to the ground in pain but there was another who fired a shot from his own crossbow.
Dodging the bolt I charged at him. Since there was no time for the Saxon to reload his crossbow he dropped it and pulled out a hatchet. Though I was already swinging my blade at his neck by the time he had drawn it and his head went flying. The Saxon who I had struck with my knife stared up at me with fear so he began to crawl away from me as fast as he could. It was a failed attempt as with a twist of my hand the knife in his shoulder dug deeper into his shoulder causing him to cry out in pain before he collapsed on his stomach and began begging for his life.

“Please spare me! I was only doing my job as a soldier!” he cried out.
“Then I’ll be doing my duty as a knight.” I said before stabbing my sword into his upper back and through his right lung. Ripping my knife from the dead Saxon’s shoulder, I rubbed the blood off of it with the Saxon’s shirt and looked back at the two knights who were still stacking up what they could against the door to bar it up as much as possible.
“You two stay here and keep the door barred. I’m going to help those at the western door. I’ll send any knights I see to help you.” I said before running off down the hallway without waiting for an answer.
Running as fast as I could I headed down the hall. Any Saxon who I met on the way were quickly cut down as if they were stalks of wheat against a scythe. Once I arrived at the western door all I saw were people being killed one after another. Some were knights, somewhere Saxon’s, and others were just innocent people looking for a safe place to hide. Blood soaked the stone floor and much of it was splattered against the walls. Yet people were still fighting as if they were in an open field.
Several of the Saxon’s that had mingled their way in with the knights among the chaos saw me and began running across the corpses towards me. Without any hesitation I killed each and every one of them, adding to the corpses strewn across the floor. Despite all the chaos I didn’t see Mordred or Gwaine so I began fighting off the wave of Saxon’s coming through the door alongside the other knights.
Even with my aid the oncoming force was so strong and numerous that we could barely hold our ground. Knights and Saxon’s were all falling one by one with neither gaining any ground until all the Saxon’s ducked at once and a flurry of crossbow bolts were released from soldiers waiting at the door. Knights fell in unison from the attack leaving only a few alive including myself. We couldn’t hold out any longer here…
“Get down!” I heard an older woman yell just before a large man clad in all green burst into the hall from behind wielding a giant axe. Ducking as I was called to do along with the other knights, the green knight swung his axe and cleaved through at least ten of the Saxon’s at once. Repeatedly swinging his axe the green knight quickly sent the Saxon’s into a retreat. As soon as they were out the door I heard a series of chants coming from the woman. The door slammed shut and a series of large chains barred the door from the inside.

Living a Long Life as a Legend
Reincarnating into a game-like version of a medieval magical world was fine and all. A good blend of two enjoyable tropes. Lock wished he'd been born with a bunch of cheats sometimes, sure, but he could settle with being functionally immortal by abusing the system as well.
