《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》War - Part 046

About an hour before sundown we stopped for the night and began setting up camp. Those in the carts began setting up the stew pots for dinner while those on horseback set up tents. Those who had been walking all day ended up finding spots to rest and enjoyed themselves. By sundown the tents were all set up and dinner was being served.

It was a mix of stewed vegetables and meats mixed with water, alcohol, and a strange dried broth. Some spices were thrown in to taste along with some wild plants. It was probably the best soup that I had tasted on any of our trips. However, it was scarce. There was only enough for everyone to have a single serving which made many of the knights earadible. Thankfully, none of them were feeling energetic enough to complain.

Having slept we set out early the next morning. It was another two days there and I was having a hard enough time keeping myself entertained let alone keeping an eye on Merlin. Though, it probably wasn’t necessary since he didn’t seem like he was going to do anything to Arthur until we arrived in London.

The rest of the ride for the next two days went slowly. The boredom I felt during those days made me feel a bit of empathy for Tim. Perhaps extreme boredom could lead to insanity. It didn’t matter whether that was true or not though, I was still not going to apologise to Tim. that little shit didn’t deserve it. My boredom went away though as London came into sight. Several large forts made of wood logs sat on the riverway. Bridges connected them together for easy passage between and so that it could be used to attack from above.

In the waterway sat several small ships filled with men who were shooting arrows anytime a knight came into sight. On the other side of the river were soldiers climbing up the walls of one of our forts. Spearmen and archers desperately tried to stop them from gaining any ground but to no avail as anytime they would show themselves they would be hit by a series of arrows within a second. Both the enemy and ourselves were firing off catapults at the other filled with anything from large stones to flaming piles of dung and straw.

While the last couple of battles seemed one sided this seemed to be more evenly matched. It was an absolute bloodbath. The waterway was lined with dead bodies from both sides that had either fallen from the fort walls or from the boats. One of the boats had come ashore a ways away from the entrance to the waterway and was unloading soldiers armed to storm the fort from the rear. Seeing this Arthur drew his sword and led a charge against them as we were fairly close to them.

The sight of an entire army charging against this small battalion made the soldiers unloading from the boat quake in fear. As quickly as they could they began doing what they could to get back into the boat and set off. However, it wasn’t possible for them to do so by the time we arrived. Each of them were slain in seconds after we reached the boat.

“Everyone, to London! Aid them in defending it!” Arthur yelled. Each of the knights began heading towards the fort with exceptional speed. All the weariness from among the knights left them as their entire bodies became full of adrenaline and they achieved the purest of rage boners.

The knights inside the fort heard the sound of horses charging towards them from behind. Looking out they saw Arthur and the other knights and began cheering. Opening the gate for us they let us in with thankful cheers. Arthur quickly asked where the Round table knights that were stationed here were.

“Sir Griflet and Sir Lanval are both dead. The only one left is Sir Brunor and he’s across the bridge aiding in the defense.” the knight Arthur asked, replied.

“I see… we shall have a funeral for them later. I’ll head over there to help him. Mordred, you take half of the knights and work on defending against the archers on the boats.” Arthur said before riding his horse up a ramp and over the bridge. Those in the boats attempted to shoot him but he was too fast for them to hit him. I followed him as best I could along with several others. Much to my surprise Merlin stayed behind.

Arrows rained down after me though none of them were able to hit me. Those that came close ended up getting cut by Elysif’s blood or went through a small portal made by Compton and sent back at the enemies. The other side of the waterway wasn’t any better than the other. In fact, it was worse. Knight’s laid dead everywhere with arrows sticking out of them. The archers who ran out of arrows were ripping the arrows from their dead comrades and using them against the enemy as best they could. Though, none of them could line up an accurate shot due to being unable to look out at the enemy safely. Arthur rode up to a large knight wearing a bearskin coat and somewhat looked like Dinadon.

“Brunor, what’s the situation?” Arthur asked.

“What does it look like? We’re being chewed up and shit out by these Saxon’s. I’m glad you’re here but we could have used your help a few days ago.” Brunor replied harshly.

“Well, a few days ago Camelot was under siege. This seems to be part of some big scheme that they’ve cooked up. Either that or they're just attacking all of our major forts just for the fun of it.” Arthur said. Brunor’s eyes grew wide before he shook his head.

“I swear, this whole thing is a shitshow. The Saxon's are attacking us and now we have the Danes here.” Brunor said with a sigh.

“Danes?” Arthur replied with a confused look.
