XG 10 - I fight better alone
Forcing herself not to think, Wong Xue Guo had her body move to follow her mother's back. She vaguely heard Vihaan let out a curse behind her before following along.
The zombies were already aware of them and actively ran towards them with their wide open, drooling mouths. It was truly heart-thrilling to watch a large group of frenzy zombies heading fast towards them, but her mother's straight back was the one that made her continue moving forward instead of running away.
Wielding her two knives, Suzie Yap started the attack with a burst of speed, taking down the front row of the zombies. She does not waste her movement and takes them down with a single attack. There was no time to make mistakes if she wanted to protect her daughter behind her. However, she alone was not enough to stop the hoard of zombies and some had already slipped past her to target the weaker prey.
Adjusting her grip onto her broom, Wong Xue Guo started stabbing the zombies that her mother does not have enough hands to deal with. The number was still overwhelming even after some had traveled down the next floor. It should be that all zombies on this floor were now in front of them.
If they finish dealing with them, this floor will be safe and allow them some breathing space. It was that thought discarded her initial fear as she continued stabbing every chest she saw.
With the large number of zombies swarming towards them, she could only choose to guard against their teeth. She guessed that scratching would not infect her and proved it when she did not feel any changes in her body even after a long while, other than stinging from the wound. Their nails were painful but not life-threatening as long as she was not grabbed.
Wong Xue Guo grinned, her fear of being infected was slightly lessened and renewed her energy to continue fighting. She was able to ignore the sting from the scratches from the zombies, using them to keep her eyes wide open or risk getting severe injury if she closed them longer than a second.
Her body that was lacking exercise was getting tired! It was fortunate she does not have the urge to yawn.
Somehow, Wong Xue Guo and Kim Sung-Ho teamed up without being planned. He whacked the zombies with his baton, his strength surprisingly strong enough to send the zombie sprawling onto the floor with two or three hits. Then she would take the opportunity presented to stab the fallen zombies' exposed chests.
Despite being tired, the fear kept her going and she could feel her movement gotten faster with adrenaline running in her body. Her stabbing skill had also graduated from a complete newbie to an intermediate newbie.
"Argh!" Wong Xue Guo's broom had pierced past a zombie's chest, but she did not pull out. With the dead zombie in front, she charged and treated her broom as a skewer to stab past one more zombie. Unfortunately, she could not continue her pig brain idea with how heavy those bodies were. Even pulling out her broom from their chests was energy taxing.

Chest heaving from exertion, she continued on with the next zombie without the option of taking a break. Her mind was full of thoughts about killing these zombies and she must not stop.
Unknowingly, her undying will had changed her gaze to become sharper, resembling a new-born predator that discovered the joy of hunting. Her eyes glowed with a ferocious survival instinct and keep on fighting with her fast tiring body as her muscles burn from the unforgiving strain. If she had not done any warm-up exercise earlier, her state might be worse than now.
The four of them were fighting while guarding each other's back, but weariness often had their attention slip.
The one that got in trouble was Wong Xue Guo who failed to notice her back was unguarded as she had moved a bit further than the circle of her team. She had been getting rather confident with the newly acquired skill that she dared to hunt actively.
"Guo Guo!" It was Suzie Yap being the first one that noticed her daughter in danger.
Wong Xue Guo had already noticed the danger a second earlier than her mother's warning, but it did not make any difference. Legs turning weak like jelly at such a bad time, she fell onto the ground when she saw how close the zombie had crept behind her.
She already knew there would not be enough time to pull out her weapon from the dead zombie and defend herself without being bitten first. In a short amount of time, her brain was the busiest she had ever felt in her entire life.
Using her bare hands to defend herself? That was just inviting herself to be bitten.
Get up and run? Easier to say than done. Her legs had also left her to die when they fell to the ground after their initial courage had fled.
She hoped she would have the courage to commit suicide after being bitten. The thought of her future being a wandering zombie was horrible to think of, especially if she still had consciousness but was unable to control her body. It would be even more traumatic watching herself biting and eating human meat!
To think she would not have the chance to use the stun gun, so regretful. It would be a relieving sight if the stun gun could electrocute them until they were fried to crisps. Unfortunately, it would be crazy if the security team could use such a dangerous degree of electricity on humans.
Ah, Wong Xue Guo, thinking so much yet did not do anything to protect yourself… had you really given up on your life?
Death does not seem to be that scary… right?
But the zombie did not get to even touch a single strand of her hair. It was the gunshot that explained why the zombie's chest suddenly exploded, with some of its blood gotten onto her glasses and mask.
Her eyes moved to look behind the slowly falling zombie. The one that shot the zombie with a gun was her mother. Her mother had actually hidden a small handgun in her secret pocket. More bullets sailed past her, clearing the zombies around her.

Before she could look carefully, the first zombie being shot was falling towards her and suddenly it got run over by a strong force from its side. Wong Xue Guo barely registered the force as Kim Sung-Ho, who had rammed himself onto the zombie when she was suddenly enveloped by a tight hug.
The arms around her were trembling hard and she did not move away, letting her mother silently hug her. Her mother’s tremor made her realize her body was also shaking like a weak leaf, revealing her true emotions that were different from her calm mind.
She suddenly felt a little guilty for easily accepting death as a relief from the apocalypse and selfishly did not even think of her mother.
"Mother… Mother! The zombies!" Wong Xue Guo was originally going to comfort her mother, but her mind quickly reminded her of reality.
Her face paled when she thought of the huge risk her mother faced when she saved her while fighting against the zombies.
Suzie Yap released her daughter after a final squeeze. "Chen Yibo! Bring Guo Guo away!"
Hearing that familiar name, Wong Xue Guo looked around with wide eyes and saw Chen Yibo swinging a metal bat nearby. His swings were powerful, bringing down zombies for Chen Jing An to stab their hearts with a weird-looking stick, who cringed at each stab.
Wong Xue Guo does not know when they joined them. But she knew she had to thank them for saving her mother when she exposed her back to take the chance to shoot the zombies.
"Move, Xue Guo!" Chen Yibo called as he smashed a zombie’s face rather mercilessly.
Wong Xue Guo forced her weak legs to stand up and then frantically urged her numb legs to run towards Chen Yibo.
"Kim Sung-Ho! Follow me!" Wong Xue Guo called the boy that was fiercely beating up two zombies at the same time to the ground, reminding her of the whacking mole game.
She did not forget that Kim Sung-Ho had used his body to push the zombie away from her, even if it was a dead zombie. If her mother had not delivered the death blow, Kim Sung-Ho will be bitten by the zombie after pushing the zombie away from her.
Kim Sung-Ho smashed the zombies’ heads until they resembled a smashed watermelon, more or less, before running to follow Wong Xue Guo.
Chen Jiang An lends her a hand, pulling her still numb legs to run away, likely to their hideout while Chen Yibo covers their backs.
With a calmness that does not fit a teenager that was facing the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, Chen Yibo aimed his bat at the zombies' face with disturbing sounds. It took Wong Xue Guo a while to notice he had specifically aimed at a certain spot on their face.
The zombies' mouth.
Chen Yibo must have thought that without teeth, they would not be able to bite people. It was not a failsafe method, but his bat could not stab and was only able to hit, hence he had no choice but to use such a crude method to stop them from infecting people.
"Mr. Vihaan." Suzie Yap intercepted Vihaan's fight and finished the zombies around him with formidable strength and speed. She was similar to a killing machine with standardized speed and strength from the start till now. "Follow the children to hide. I will deal with them."
Vihaan stared at Suzie Yap as if she had gone suicidal. "You should hide too. Fighting against them all is insane!"
"They will destroy the hideout if left alone."
Vihaan’s eyes shook as he understood what she meant. He had seen from the camera how aggressive those monsters were when they discovered a human's hiding place. They kept on ramming their body onto the obstacles until they gave in, just to get their hands on the human.
The sports store will not hold up if a large wave of zombies surrounded it.
Vihaan watched Suzie Yap continue killing the zombies with a decisive mind. Her strength had allowed him some resting period, which was insane. "Can you alone deal with all these?"
They had killed quite a bit, and the number of monsters had reduced. But it was still a large number for a lone fighter.
"I fight better alone."
Her words would make one think she was arrogant and overestimate herself, yet he could hear truthfulness from her tone. Vihaan sucked in a deep breath and slowly released it as his gaze became sharper. He adjusted his glasses and moved his limbs into a position, preparing to run as fast as he could.
"Fight well and achieve victory. Your daughter needs you," Vihaan blessed with a tinge of bitterness for being ungentlemanly for leaving this woman to fight alone. He hardened his heart and charged to where the children had gone.
The metal pole was tough, but after using it to hit and stab many times, it became bent. He does not know how long his weapon will last, but if he stays behind to fight along with Suzie Yap, the metal will likely break not long after.
Then he will be a liability.
Vihaan could only bet that Suzie Yap was telling the truth that she fought better alone. Without needing to protect anyone, she could fight freely without restraint.
That woman was not ordinary and he hoped that was the truth.
Suzie Yap's smile gradually formed into a sharp sneer as she listened to Vihaan's footsteps getting further away. Her eyes stared at the zombies as if they were the dirtiest bug that dared to crawl around the paradise known as Earth.
“This time, I would not let anyone stop me from keeping my daughter safe.”
Her words were an oath to herself as her movement became sharper, deadlier, and faster as bloodlust crawled out of her body like an invisible mist.

The Shape of Home
The world of Alvelotyl is one of fantasy, one filled with many races, an expansive magic system exploring themes of identity, some LitRPG elements, moral ambiguity and no small amount of magical inventions similar to those in our world. Dragons with blogs showing off their hoards of treasure live alongside [Hunters] chasing Giant Toads, or [Bandits] using rifles charged with Fire Magic. The Shape of Home is a story within this world, and follows the exploits of Yuri Scalesmith, a budding Lizardfolk adventurer from a small country town with a knack for inventing, and how her life drastically changes after she’s taken from home forever following a single catastrophic event. After being taken from her previously normal life, Yuri is thrust into a world of sprawling streets, magically mutated monsters, and a crime war for territory stretching across an entire city. The Shape of Home normally updates every Tuesday and Saturday at 6PM GMT, but I'm trying out different upload times to see how people react and attract others in differing timezones. There will be two week long breaks after each story arc's Interlude. This story is also a participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge!

Slave 53: The Phoenix
Azgarth is a violent Warlord from a planet where everyone feared him, a man that never lost a battle whether it be from his enemies surrendering or dying. After entering a wormhole, this once infamous man had his memory completely wiped. He was enslaved under the name 53. The great comet arrived one day and gave 53 an extremely rare animal aspect, the Phoenix. Having a rare animal aspect puts people on the fast track to power in this world. Will 53 show the same brutality as his former self? Author: So there will probably be a lot of changes when I start hashing out the whole classes and what not. I'm not planning on this to have statuses or anything like that, but when people 'lvl up' is probably going to be something like ascending 1, 2, 3, etc. With each ascension they are many times stronger, for example, someone who hasn't ascend at all would be at 0, but someone with a 1 would be about 5x stronger than someone who is 0 and so on. It would take a long time to reach each one. With the red colored marks which represents fire, I have a couple ideas with what I want to do, in a way a battle royale, as this continent they are on isn't very large, but all four elements are on it (or more, I might add light, dark, and some others) but all the humans have red, while a different alien race has blue (water), brown (earth), and grey (Air). The color of the mark they have influences how they feel about each other, a example of that would be if a red saw a brown, then they would naturally feel a disgust about each other, and if they killed someone from a different color they would gain way more life essence which is needed to ascend than they would killing someone from their same color. The last thing, I'm not too sure about the main character yet, as I like the whole idea of a memory wipe, I almost think it'd be more entertaining to have the guy slowly regain all his memory, then just becoming his normal self again. If that's the case I'll have to change the title of book. The original idea was this guy would keep the name 53, and his prior self named Azgarth is sharing his body, as in he can talk to him and give him advice on things since he doesn't want him to die since he is sorta like a split personality sharing the same body. Looking at it now, idk if I want this guy to be named 53 forever. Warning: A lot of dark content in the book, especially in the flashbacks.
