《Shadow In Your Mind》Chapter 43 - Gangster Boss

XG 43 - Gangster Boss
Sprawled on a yoga mat while waiting for her breathing to go back to normal, Wong Xue Guo stretched out her arm to grab her towel along with her mobile phone. Snuggling half of her face onto the towel, she surfed the web, trying to ignore Chen Yibo doing push-ups nearby.
Although they had slept late last night, they still woke up at six a.m. and did the promised jogging. Last night’s scheduled running was forcibly canceled after Lok Hui Man’s unannounced visit.
It was impressive for Wong Xue Guo, who had not participated in any sports previously, to manage to finish two laps around the spacious villa. She thinks it was contributed to the shopping mall incident where it activated her sleeping muscles and started working.
Hey, she was still young after all, with youthful muscle recovery speed under her belt!
She started to look forward to increasing the number of laps, thinking that if she was in trouble, she would be able to run fast. Even though she will be dead tired after the exercise, she prefers having her guard down and doing intense training in an environment that still provides safety than in the future where she would risk her life to sleep for a bit.
Despite her eyes nearly closing from sleepiness that was lulled by the soft wind accompanied by the warm morning sun, she still wanted to continue surfing the net. She had only slept for three hours last night, with the excitement of Nurul Hanani finally replying to her message.
Nurul Hanani was somewhere safe, but unknown of the exact location. No matter how much she pestered her brother, he refused to tell her, only leaving a command for her to stay inside her given room. He even locked the door!
He was not cruel enough to leave his sister without any entertainment or contact with the outside world, which explained the sudden reply to Wong Xue Guo. Although it was torturous to stay inside the room without freedom, it gave her time and motivation to train her ability, which was creating fireballs out of thin air. Luckily, her control was not bad or she would burn the things in her room.
In Nurul Hanani’s words, her ability was kickass!

As for Low Lin Ya, she was at the same place as Nurul Nanani and stayed together with her family. But the two friends were not allowed to meet due to Nurul Hanani’s condition that was still kept a secret from the majority, with power-play involved among the top chain in command.
The friends could only send each other messages to make sure they were fine.
“Does that mean you will get to be in the front line to kill zombies?” Wong Xue Guo asked Nurul Hanani.
“Does not seem like it.”
Nurul Hanani had heard from her father that the government was waiting for the antidote and took a stand in refusing to kill ‘innocent people’, which then her father called bullshit. It has been more than a week since the first outbreak in Korea and no other country has good news when it comes to developing an antidote. Other countries had already taken action in killing the infected to stop the spreading.
With how fast the virus was spreading, the scientist might not even have enough time and resources to create the cure!
“Did you know that your dad made a big announcement?” Nurul Hanani asked. “He’s taking an opposite stand against the government!”
It was not exactly Charles Wong, as it was the Winter Fruit company that had issued a statement on their official website. It started with apologizing on the company researchers’ behalf for being unable to produce an antidote yet. They also advised that for the people’s safety, they should kill the infected and stay away from other people.
It was a rather black and white statement, not revealing that there were people with the potential to survive the bite.
As for when she was messaging her mother, Wong Xue Guo reported everything that happened, including the visit and proposal from Lok Hui Man. She knew Aurora likely had done so already, but she still does it, just in case her mother has something else to say to her alone.
Her mother replied to let Aurora deal with Lok Hui Man. As for her father, sooner or later he will appear. Wong Xue Guo only needs to stay in the villa and learn how to use her sword, with Kang Xunsu supervising her. She was not allowed to train alone.

Speaking of her father, she had not seen him since the Chinese New Year in february. It has been more than nine months since then and also the longest period he had been away. This year, her mother had occasionally gone to visit her father instead of waiting for him at home. As for their daughter, she needed to attend school and could not follow along.
She had always thought her parents just wanted their second honeymoon without their daughter being a light bulb. But after knowing the fortune-telling prediction, she wondered if it was because the date of her death prediction was getting closer that her father did not return home.
Was he putting in all his effort to crack down the gene and look for the cure with the small amount of time left?
The increasingly repetitive news from social media and the gentle sound of the waves soon lulled Wong Xue Guo to sleep.
Chen Yibo stopped doing push-ups once he noticed she was dozing off and the phone in her hand had slipped down onto the mat. He would have called her to sleep in a bed, but seeing her resting so peacefully, he was a little reluctant in disturbing her rest.
His wristwatch showed it was seven-thirty and decided to wake her up at eight. He had not prepared breakfast and was unsure if the bodyguards would cook or not. They were also busy guarding around the villa, so those that were not working, like him, should help out.
"Hey, little princess! Your father is coming!" Kang Xunsu stepped into the backyard and loudly announced.
It was not even a ten minutes of nap and Wong Xue Guo definitely felt irritated. But after digesting what Kang Xunsu said, she immediately forgot her annoyance. "Really?"
"Yeah. He's coming now." The phone in Kang Xunsu's grip vibrated. "Huh? At the front door already?"
"Father is at the front door?" Wong Xue Guo sat up and rolled up the yoga mat.
"And asking to open the door for them, bwahahaha!" Kang Xunsu walked in the direction of the door, still laughing.
Well, it was a little amusing to know the owner of the house does not have the key to get in.
Gazing down at her sweat-filled shirt, she pondered if she should take a quick shower before meeting her father. In her heart, there was a small little flower bud blooming in anticipation and happiness in meeting her father again.
It was almost an instinct to look good and proper before her father. Maybe, this time, he would praise her for looking cute.
But once she remembered Chen Yibo that was standing beside her, she pushed away her childish desire and let out an awkward cough. "Are you ready? Let's go."
Chen Yibo secretly raised his mouth when Wong Xue Guo did not notice and followed her.
After turning around the corner, they would be able to see the entrance. Wong Xue Guo halted for more than a second after seeing it and then forced herself to continue walking.
One, two, three… seven, eight… thirteen.
Her father brought thirteen people with him, every one of them looking threatening and dangerous, especially the woman with blue hair and the guy with red hair. But none of them was her grandmother, who she had expected to be with her father. From the last message from her grandmother, she was in Hong Kong, but unsure where she was.
There was no doubt at all her father would not abandon his own mother. No matter how indifferent he was usually, that does not mean he did not care about his family. Her grandmother must have something to do and choose to separate from her son.
Hiding her disappointment and worry, her eyes went to the most attention-grabbing person among the group.
It was the man standing in the front, dressed in a completely black suit with a trench coat draped over his shoulder. The sight of the unlit cigar resting between his lips, the sharp combed back hairstyle and a big gold ring on his right thumb finally convinced Wong Xue Guo that his father had worked hard in tuning down his sharp aura when he came back home.
The father she was familiar with always wears a formal suit, except without a tie. Even when resting at home, he only ditched his coat, with his vest remaining on.
His look right now was the exact definition of a gangster boss!

Overgrowth
I never thought I'd be killed by butterflies. But here I am... Edmon Valli was a smuggler, before a freak storm threw him off course and stranded him on a desert island smack in the middle of an uncharted monster zone. Trying his best to survive, or possibly even escape, he stumbles across the find of a lifetime: an unclaimed dungeon crystal. This is a dungeon-ish story, but without reincarnation or transmigration. I started it as a whim for NaNoWriMo so I may drop it any time after that... or I might not. My current plan is to write until I can reach some sort of conclusion and call it 'volume one'. I hope someone enjoys reading it for now! All comments, corrections, and criticism welcome.

Vree liked his humans. They were kind, clever, and tended to be adorable, in the way that a small, particularly spiny cub was adorable right before it bit you.
