In Book 1, Val undergoes a training arc with Tavras, the Sea Itself. The culmination of her journey is more profound than simply gaining permission to go to the Summit of Ascension—Foofy becomes her divine beast.

Since this is the end of a book, it also happens to be a good point in which to view the story as a whole.
