The Legendary Rebuilding of a World by a Realist Demon King Chapter 11
The Man who was called the Demon Vice-Commander
I put the sword into the Klein bottle.
This time, there was something very different about the way it flashed. And it was the same with the magic that surrounded the pot.
There was usually an ominous, monstrous aura there, but this time it was much more divine.
Perhaps this was a feature of Spirit Summoning.
It allowed you to summon those who were Heroes or called Gods in other worlds.
It needed a little flare.
And then I thought of something.
“The rarity of the monsters are displayed when you summon them. But what about Spirit Summoning?”
Eve answered.
“Monsters are rated with five stars by rarity. But Heroes reside in an exclusive six-star rank. Also called God Rare.”
“I see. It really is like summoning a god then.”
“The statuses of summoned Heroes are not displayed. And so you will not know how strong they are until you put them on the battlefield.”
“And you say that they have a will?”
“They do.”
“Then I will use this one as a commander. My army has grown in scale after all. I was just thinking about how I could use a commander.”
“But, as I just said, it is not as if these Heroes will be completely devoted to…”
“And as I just said, I would not be much of a Demon King if I couldn’t use that.”
“…”
Eve went silent for a moment and bowed.
“I understand. I will say no more on the matter. But if this Hero attempts to go against you, I will destroy him, even if it costs me my life.”
She said as she unsheathed her shortsword.

“I commend your spirit. But I will be careful so that will not be necessary. Ah, here comes our Hero now. It seems that the summoning was a success.”
The Klein bottle was shining brighter than before now.
Thick, white smoke filled the room, and a human figure appeared from within.
I could tell from the silhouette that this was a man, but his hair was long.
He was slender but exuded a strange power.
Strength and also madness oozed out from the smoke.
I took one look at him after the smoke lifted and knew. This one was obsessed with battling.
The person who now looked back at me was a man with a reticent expression.
He was handsome but looked unfriendly.
My first impression was that he was quick to anger, but would never let his guard down.
I had said it before to Eve, but first impressions would be important here.
It would be best to say something before he was able to detect that I was nervous.
And so I spoke to him. As the Demon King Ashtaroth.
It was not hard to create a self-important and dignified air.
“…I am the Demon King Ashtaroth. Nameless samurai, I am the one who summoned you. First, I will ask what your name is. Then you will serve me. Together, we will conquer all that is under heaven.”
The man glared at me with assessing eyes, and his mouth opened slowly.
“…My name is Toshizou… Hijikata Toshizou. I should have died at the battle of Toba Fushimi. But for some reason, I lived to reach Hakodate.”
“Lend me your power if death means nothing to you.”
“I was supposed to have died at Goryokaku in Hakodate. So why am I here?”
“The will of heaven. You were brought here. This is your God-given destiny. You will become my sword.”

“The will of heaven. Brought here. How very amusing. Just like Kondo. Very well, if you will prepare a place for me to die, I will help you willingly.”
The man unsheathed his sword.
“–However, I want to test whether or not you have a spine.”
“Test me? Fair enough. What shall I do?”
“Don’t do anything. I will swing my sword, and you will stay still. If you move even a little, you will lose.”
“So you want to test my courage? Then do it.”
I blinked slowly and then stopped all movement.
The samurai who called himself Hijikata Toshizou put his hand on his sword.
This was the art of sword drawing.
A deadly move of lashing out while unsheathing your sword.
With just the smallest tremble of the hand or a hint of murderous intent, my head would be blown off.
I prayed that this man did not intend to murder me and closed my eyes.
A few seconds later, the tip of the blade travels past my neck, with only a few millimeters separating us.
My throat would have likely been cut if I moved even a little out of fear.
Toshizou saw this and said:
“…Good. You have the courage of a king.”
I answered calmly.
“It is merely defiance. I cannot hope to conquer the world if I cannot trust a single samurai.”
“Defiant, but the right way to think.”
“But I was also confident that you would not cut me.”
“Oh? And why is that?”
“I didn’t sense the intent to murder. Right now, you have only loathing for yourself. You have the eyes of one who is only searching for a place to die. I did not think someone like you would do it when I am guaranteed to take you to such interesting places.”
“…”
“And perhaps you have noticed Eve, who is behind you. If she sensed for even a moment that you would do something strange, she would have killed you. I think you noticed that. Why waste your life in such a way?”
“Indeed. The murderous Toshizou cannot meet his ultimate end by the hands of some girl dressed as a maid. That was very perceptive of you. I think that you may just be worthy of having me as your sword.”
Toshizou said and bowed politely.
“My name is Hijikata Toshizou. I am a farmer who was raised in Bushu, Tama. I became a warrior due to certain circumstances, but I am a farmer’s son at heart. Use me as an expendable soldier.
“Hardly. I know that a warrior like you is rarer than gold. I will prepare a place for you to die one day, but do not think it will be any time soon.”
“I am grateful.”
Toshizou said and gave a very oriental smile.
And so the Ashtaroth army gained the Hero, Hijikata Toshizou.
As a commander, he would become the most vital part of the army.
He would attack, he would protect, he draws first blood, second, and third. His uniform would become so drenched with blood that he would earn the nickname, Devil Toshizou.
As strange as it was, it was similar to the nickname he had in his past life.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
