Chapter 15
Not long after, the guards returned and surrounded the back courtyard .
“Teacher, there are no tracks of the assassin . ” A guard reported .
Zhou Zhongmao told the guards to back down . Since he dared to come to the Lin Family to assassinate Cousin, he had definitely prepared well .
He was filled with doubt .
Although Cousin was strong, he was at most at Grade One of the Martial Path .
How weak did the assassin have to be to fail?
Lin Fan looked into the mirror and took in a deep cold breath . He looked at himself in the mirror with a frown, there was a ring of black around his eyes .
“Aiyo, who did I offend? He could hit me anywhere, but why aim for my eye? What an asshole!”
As the young master of a rich family, what he paid most attention to was his own image .
“Cousin, take a look, the assassin left this . ” Zhou Zhongmao felt pain for his cousin . His cousin was attacked and if he caught this weak assassin, he would cut him into pieces .
However, the assassin had left a clue .
Gou’zi got a cooked egg from the kitchen to help Young Master bring down the swelling .
Otherwise, the consequences would be catastrophic .
Lin Fan rubbed the egg and tilted his eyes . He didn’t bother at all and even his tone sounded like he was wronged, “What is that?”
“Purple Sun Four Saint Scripture?”
“Cousin, it looks like a heart technique . ”
Zhou Zhongmao was shocked . He didn’t expect for the assassin to leave a heart cultivation technique .
For the Martial Path, Heart Cultivation Techniques were really important .
The one he cultivated was the Demon Enforcing Heart Scripture given to him by Uncle .
“Heart Cultivation Technique? Is it useful?” Lin Fan was furious, he wanted to find this assassin and beat him up . He also wanted to ask him if he knew how to hit something that isn’t the eyes .
Zhou Zhongmao only thought about his cousin’s cultivation and said anxiously, “Cousin, how can it be useless? Take a look…”
The moment he said that .
He stretched his hand, his fingers turned into a claw and squeezed . A flower vase far away shattered .

There was an invisible power that exploded out of Zhou Zhongmao’s hand .
It couldn’t be seen from the naked eye .
“Then?” Lin Fan took a look, “Cousin, the problem we are discussing is me being hit . Why are you talking about Heart Cultivation Techniques to me?”
“Cousin, your talents are unparalleled in the world . Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been able to cultivate the Vengeful Tiger Blade Technique to Reach the peak Realm . ”
“As long as you are willing to cultivate Heart Cultivation Methods, you will become a top expert like Uncle . ”
Zhou Zhongmao nagged and hoped that his cousin would be willing to cultivate it .
Lin Fan raised his hand to ask him to keep silent .
He was thinking about something .
The Heart Cultivation Technique dropped from the body of the assassin .
This meant that this thing was useful to the assassin .
“Gou’zi . ” Lin Fan thought of an idea, “Hold this Heart Cultivation Technique . Tomorrow copy it and stick it around the courtyard, anyone can learn it . ”
“Yes, Young Master . ” Gou’zi replied .
Zhou Zhongmao held his breath, Cousin’s idea was just too special .
Lin Fan didn’t bother and waved his hand, “It is so late, scatter . Leave someone to guard me and the rest go back to sleep . ”
He was frightened by the assassin .
If he didn’t leave anyone here to defend him, he was really afraid the assassin would return and kill him, or maybe bring more experts over .
At that time, even if he cried, no tears would come out .
“Cousin, sleep well . I will guard outside today and no one will hurt you . ” Zhou Zhongmao said .
Lin Manor Reading Room .
Lin Wanyi took off the mask on his face, “That kid, kicking your father in the morning, is it fun?”
If Lin Fan knew that the guy who punched his right eye was his cheap father, he would probably spit out blood .
Was there a need?
If they took revenge against one another, when would it end?
To talk peacefully and calmly and not attack, how good would that be?
However, to Lin Wanyi, he really spent a lot of effort for that unfilial son to cultivate .

Now it was great, that kid temporarily didn’t disappoint him .
Although he didn’t cultivate any Heart Cultivation Technique, the strength he showed was already at Grade One .
Especially his comprehension of the Vengeful Tiger Blade Technique .
It had reached a stage where normal people couldn’t reach .
Each Cultivation Technique was split into Realms .
Basics, Go to next level, Mastery through comprehension, True Mastery, Reach the peak, Returning to True .
There were six large realms, for the first three, one would basically reach it if they aren’t stupid .
The latter three needed a certain amount of comprehension . As for reaching Returning to True, it was really difficult; even for such a normal blade technique like Vengeful Tiger Blade Technique
If one could cultivate it to Returning to True, its strength would be shocking .
Ka Chi!
Old Wu walked into the reading room .
“Old Master . ”
Lin Wanyi smiled, “How is the unfilial child?”
Old Wu shook his head bitterly, “Old Master, your punch caused his right eye to swell . Without a few days of rest, it won’t go down . ”
“Even after he got the Purple Sun Four Saint Scripture he wasn’t interested . He gave it to his servants to copy and rip it open and paste it in the back courtyard for anyone to cultivate . ”
Old Master had spent so much effort towards Young Master .
To give Young Master pressure using his identity as an assassin and also drop a Heart Cultivation Technique at the same time .
When normal people got it, they would naturally be happy .
However, one couldn’t treat Young Master like a normal person .
After he got the Heart Cultivation Technique, not only was he not excited, he even wanted to spread it!
“What?”
Lin Wanyi’s smile retracted, his face was filled with rage . “That unfilial child is really doing that?”
“Old Master, this method doesn’t work . Young Master isn’t interested in cultivation . ” Old Wu said, “Young Master is able to comprehend the Vengeful Tiger Blade Technique to such a high realm shows that his comprehension is really good . If he wastes it like this, it would be a huge regret . ”
“Unfilial child, he really is an unfilial child!”
When he heard those words, the rage in his heart started to explode .
He gave him joy and surprise in the morning .
At night, he gave him a nightmare .
“Take it back . ” Lin Wanyi said .
Old Wu was in deep thought and opened his mouth, “Old Master, I think we need not to . Anyway it is just pasted in the back courtyard and Young Master will see it everyday . Maybe one day he will suddenly be interested in it . ”
“With me taking care, no one will dare steal it . ”
Lin Wanyi sighed and didn’t say anything more .
He raised his hand to instruct him to leave .
Old Wu left the reading room, he raised his head and looked at the moon and sighed, “Young Master, you have to work hard, you don’t have much time left . ”
Jade sun .
Morning .
Lin Manor Back Courtyard .
Within the house, Lin Fan opened his eyes; the egg on his right eye had turned cold after placing it there for the whole night .
He broke it open and shoved it into his mouth .
He came to the front of the mirror .
“That guy is so vicious, why hasn’t it faded?”
Lin Fan felt his head hurt . His right eye was a panda eye, and it affected his image as a rich young master .
Gou’zi came in to help him wash up .
“Gou’zi, if I go out like this would it ruin my image?” Lin Fan asked .
“Young Master, your image will always be so eye catching . Even if your right eye is a little black, it won’t be affected . ” Gou’zi said .
Lin Fan was helpless, asking him was useless .
“Yi!”
Suddenly, he noticed that he received numerous rage points .
Rage points: 1,201
Last night he only had 101 .
Why was there so much after he slept?
Who was it?
Who didn’t bother to sleep at night and even raged at him?
Did that person eat too much and have nothing to do?

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
