Chapter 106

Soo Hyuk doubted Ross.
‘It can’t be this easy?’
He didn’t expect Ross to take him to Haccid this easily. He initially thought a fight would break out, and he’d have to earn some hints of where Haccid was located.
“But I hope we maintain some distance between each other on the way,” said Ross.
“That’s fine.”
Soo Hyuk was lost in his thoughts and quickly nodded. He didn’t want to close the distance either.
Ross kept his long sword in his hand as he walked towards the door. Soo Hyuk took a few steps aside, and Ross passed by while being wary of Soo Hyuk.
After Ross went out of the room, he said, “Why don’t we introduce ourselves? I’m Ross.”
“Garrett…”
There was no point in telling Ross his real name in a situation like this, so Soo Hyuk told him an alias.
Ross and Soo Hyuk continued to walk while cautious of each other, and after a short moment, they arrived at the first floor. Ross took out a book from a bookshelf, and the shelf started to move to the side, revealing a staircase headed downstairs.
‘Oh! They had a basement.’
Soo Hyuk thought there was a secret room because Haccid wasn’t on one of the three floors, and that secret room was this basement.
“I’ll take the lead from here. It is best for your sake not to plan on stabbing me from behind.”
Ross threatened Soo Hyuk and headed down the stairs. Soo Hyuk hurriedly followed behind in case Ross was scheming something.
Ross quickened his pace, and Soo Hyuk frowned, realizing that Ross probably had a plan.
‘Is he planning to use Haccid as a hostage…? I should have just killed him.’
Once the stairs leading to the basement appeared, Soo Hyuk originally planned to kill Ross. He let Ross be in case he’d have to use Ross, but Soo Hyuk regretted his decision.
“Captain?”
A voice came from ahead, but the voice was not from Ross.
‘So there were other people in the mansion.’
Soo Hyuk has killed quite a lot of people at Romian’s place, and seeing that the first two floors were empty, he thought that only Ross was in the mansion, but the voices ahead proved him wrong.

Stopping his steps, Soo Hyuk saw Ross smirking at him with three men around him.
Each of the three men held a weapon; a shield, a whip, and a dagger.
“Who is that man?”
The man with the shield asked Ross while staring at Soo Hyuk.
“He came for the guy in there.”
Ross then told Soo Hyuk, “He’s in there. Well, you probably won’t believe me, but you can go ahead and check.”
Ross opened the prison gate and stepped aside.
“Hmm, are you worried that I’m standing too close to the door?”
Ross and the three men then stepped further away.
Soo Hyun stood still while thinking, ‘What is he scheming?’
He then walked closer to the prison door while glancing at Ross and his henchmen.
Soo Hyuk was surprised when he saw a man chained and filled with scars inside the prison chambers. That man was Haccid.
Soo Hyuk approached Haccid and checked his condition, and asked, “Are you alright?”
“Ughh..” Haccid groaned painfully.
Haccid could not answer Soo Hyuk and kept on groaning due to his body and mind going through a long duration of torture.
“This guy must know a lot, too.”
Ross said to the three guys while staring at Soo Hyuk.
‘Of course, it was gonna turn out like this.’
He felt it was strange that everything was going so smoothly.
‘He let me in to prevent me from running away.’
Even when Ross met the three other men, he didn’t attack Soo Hyuk in case Soo Hyuk ran away.
“What do you want?” asked Soo Hyuk.
“The things you know.”
“The things I know?”
“Yeah.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I was going to figure that out later.”
Ross smirked and made a cold gaze.
“Seize him,” ordered Ross. The three men followed the order and equipped their weapons.
Soo Hyuk checked on Haccid and looked at Ross and thought,
“The storms are a no go.”
If he could, he wanted to throw the Poison or Fire Storm on them, but Haccid wasn’t in a state to withstand the effects.
The prison was a small room, so Haccid and Soo Hyuk would not leave unscathed if he used a storm attack. Soo Hyuk could take the hit, but Haccid would probably die from it.

“Poison Spear”
Soo Hyuk decided to use the poison Spear instead and aimed it at Ross.
“Captain!”
The man with the shield shouted and stood in between Soo Hyun and Ross.
The spear shattered as it collided with the shield.
But the attack didn’t end there. The poison spear was highly condensed poison shaped into a spear. If the shape was distorted, the poison would burst out.
“Aghh!”

The man was poisoned and fell to the ground after he let out a loud scream.
Ross was surprised at the sudden event, and the man with the dagger yelled,
“Lazas! You bastard!”
The man with the dagger didn’t dare to approach Lazas, worried that the poison may still linger, so instead, he rushed at Soo Hyuk.
“Poison Ball.”
Soo Hyuk cast the poison ball spell, and whether it was because the man with the dagger was consumed by rage or didn’t expect the casting to be that fast, he remained in the spell’s trajectory and was a second away from being hit.
At that moment, a whip wrapped around the man’s arm and pulled the man out of the trajectory.
The poison ball missed and fell on the floor.
“Get a hold of yourself!” yelled the man with the whip.
“He’s not someone we can think lightly of.”
He then looked towards Ross and said, “Can you leave for a moment? Leave it to us.”
“Is a few minutes enough…?”
“I’m sorry.”
Ross kept quiet and did not answer the man’s apology. After a short pause, Ross made an apologetic face and opened his mouth,
“It’s my fault.”
“It’s not.”
Ross took out a warp scroll. It seemed that Ross was planning to use that scroll to leave the mansion.
Soo Hyuk had no intentions of letting Ross go, so he began to cast the Fire Spear,
“Fire…”
Before Soo Hyuk could finish his cast, a whip came flying at him.
“Don’t you dare!”
Ross ripped the scroll and disappeared while Soo Hyuk dodged the whip.
Soo Hyuk frowned while staring at the spot Ross disappeared, but that wasn’t for long because the whip did not stop after attacking once.
The whip continued to go on a rampage and attacked from many directions. The fortunate thing was due to the whip’s wide-area attack, the man with the dagger had no room to assist.
Soo Hyuk dodged the multiple attacks, but the whip got faster and faster, and finally landed a hit. Soo Hyuk checked his HP and was startled at the drop.
‘The hell? 500 damage from 1 hit?’
Soo Hyuk was surprised and laughed at his previous actions. One attack only did 500 damage. It was so weak that there was no point in dodging.
Although getting hit by the whip did not hurt, but it did make Soo Hyuk annoyed.
He did not feel like getting hit any longer, so he opened his mouth and chanted.,
“Fire Spear.”
Ignoring the whip, Soo Hyuk called out his fire Spear.
The man stopped his whip and leaped to dodge the attack, but he couldn’t evade it completely. Although he wasn’t directly hit, he got caught up in the after-effects and fell forward.
Soo Hyuk didn’t waste this chance and cast a spell where the man fell,
“Pool of Poison.”
If the man was standing, he would have leaped out of the pool, but he was in bad condition and was also half-kneeling, so he didn’t have the power and fell back down.
The man with the whip died, and the drop window was updated. Soo Hyuk glimpsed at the window and then looked towards the man with the dagger.
The man kept quiet and alternately looked at Soo Hyuk and the door in fear and embarrassment. He had no chance of escaping. The pool of poison blocked up the prison door.
But he did not dare to go against Soo Hyuk, who effortlessly killed the other two men. The man was frustrated that he wanted to run away or at least stand against Soo Hyuk but couldn’t do either.
“Poison Chain.”
Soo Hyuk cast Poison Chain and killed the man. He didn’t want to create potential danger by sparing the man’s life. He already let Ross escape, he did not want to add another one.
Finishing off the man, Soo Hyuk heard Haccid’s groaning.
Soo Hyuk looked at Haccid and thought to himself,
‘Will a heal be sufficient?’

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.

Things such as growing stronger, becoming smarter, feeling more agile, became possible within short periods of time from that point onwards. The one who regretted his weak healing abilities for years began to chase after the magic powers that could turn reason and sense upside down while keeping his goal, this duty to the wrongs he committed. The other one, who complained about his lack of strength, strove towards the path of an unbeatable champion to protect those he held dear. When the person who had everything found a path to desire for more, not fearing the consequences and the obstacles, he also began to walk onwards to a new life. And among them, the one who walked aimlessly but also never stepped down on the choices he made along the way, was the one who couldn’t be ignored nor disrespected by anyone. The “Player” system that they all obtained, and which granted them several abilities, knowledge and directions, was also the beginning of an entire new era in this world where monsters, magic and technology, were already common and wide-spread. There’s not a single hero, but after committing mistakes after mistakes, learning from the painful and thorny path that they take, and growing as people with the people that surround them, then someday... there will certainly be saviors.
