Dungeon Reset Chapter 8

From that day onwards, Daun Jung’s routine became a little busy.
Or perhaps it would be better to say that it had become a little more lively.
Daily task one: Dig a tunnel
“It is a pity about Tunnel No.1, but getting food and water is a profit. How about I advance into direction number 2 this time?”
[Just, die.]
The Rabbit’s reaction was always pointed.
It had gotten even worse ever since his unexpected achievement.
“Hey, Rabbit. Where do you think I should dig to reach the surface? Do you know anything?”
There was a reason why he was still not able to escape above ground despite his hard efforts gone into digging.
The rock layer was still blocking the way up.
[You think I’m crazy?! Why the heck would I tell you something like that!]
“I know right? But yeah, I thought you might tell if I asked.”
Daun Jung evasively passed over the matter.
[…….]
“Hmm-hmm. Clump Dirt! Clump Dirt!”
The back of his head stung for some reason, but regardless Daun Jung focused on digging on a new tunnel.
And so he worked as much as he could, and when the hunger came he would immediately eat and rest, then when he felt drowsy, he would return to his bed and fall asleep.
He would always sleep when sleepy, and always rest when tired.
Stamina was a resource, after all.
Now there was really nothing to hurry about in the current situation.
Daily task two: watch the pond when there’s spare time.
What a fun hobby it was.
When he watched the baby fish swimming in the clear water, he would end watching absentmindedly without even knowing the passage of time.
It was the only entertainment allowed to Daun Jung in this place where there was nothing much else to do.
He squatted down and counted the wriggling fish, one by one.
One, two, three… Six in total.
They were still only about the size of a finger.
‘Hmm, they’re a bit too young and too few to catch and eat right away. I need to them grow up quickly, fatten up, and lay some eggs too.’
Although he would not be able to see fruit immediately, Daun Jung could ease some of his worries about the future thanks to these children.
The food in his Inventory was still sufficient, and by the time it ran out these cute kids would most likely have grown up and become the ancestors of a family.
How greatly reassuring it was. They started as no more than six, but the future they held was so grand.
“Ah, they’re really cute though. Should I name these guys? Their scales are silver so Silva, Silvan, Silvano, Silvanus…”
And naming was not all he did.
While he was at it, he began to build little rooms for each fishy inside the pond using earthen bricks.
“This is Silva’s room, this is Silvan’s room, this is the living room, and then this is the bathroom. Ah, should I make a treasure store as well?”
Having so little to do, he found fun in doing something unnecessary again.
“Yeah! As said from olden times, the bowl’s gotta be larger to give lots of feed!”
And so he expanded the pond to be a little bigger.
He built a waterway along the edge of the pond, and he ended up unintentionally making a square moat with his home base as the center.
It had started out as something to do for fun at first, but its completion brought about an unexpected effect.

The air had been so dry with the surroundings shut off with earth, but now it was more comfortable to breathe with the humidity level controlled by the circulation of water.
“Nice, nice.”
[Clowning around, seriously. Last time you were mucking about with dirt, now you’re playing with water?]
“Oh, you came?”
The Rabbit would disappear to carry out the dungeon game, then appear all of a sudden whenever Daun Jung was about to forget its existence.
He asked the Rabbit a question in an oblique manner.
“By the way, Rabbit, I wonder what these kids eat? Do you know anything as a Helper?”
[Again, you think I’m crazy? Why would I tell you that?]
“You were a crazy Rabbit from the…”
[Say what?]
Glare!
“Hmm-hmm. Well, they came out as an achievement reward, so I’m sure they’ll live fine on their own even if I leave them be.”
The Rabbit’s face twitched at Daun Jung evasively passing over the matter again.
‘I guess I was right.’
Just as he had predicted, the fish grew day by day without him needing to do anything.
And then there was daily task three.
He began to practice his ‘wall building’ technique in his spare moments.
It was a trick he had learned on the fly of the moment, but he was coming to gradually realize the greatness of it the more he practiced.
The technique of laying down dirt bricks from his Inventory with just a gesture.
It was just like placing down a Tetris line piece wherever he desired.
Using this in succession would result in building a wall within a flash.
[Humph. Nothing great about making a wall.]
“Even if I do this?”
A chorus of stacking bricks!
The Rabbit, who had been mocking the sight of him practicing, was forced to shut up as Daun Jung erected four walls in front of him and created a temporary building in the blink of an eye.
At this point, it was not something to laugh at.
‘He made a house in an instant?’
The Rabbit’s expression grew serious.
It had recognized the value of his technique at a glance.
Although it was made out of mere earth, one could take just a moment to think and tell the difference made by having this marginal safety zone in a dungeon full of danger.
Nighttime in the dungeon was a truly dangerous period.
Monsters would grow even more ferocious when darkness fell, and the light-hating creatures would crawl out from the shadows to attack the participants.
This was why whenever night came the participants always had to find safe places like caves to hide in.
They had to keep watch in rotations until daybreak, unable to relax for a single moment.
But what if they had a house to stop monsters breaking in?
And if that house could be made in the snap of a finger, like so?
Perhaps the situation of the dungeon game would change in many ways.
And that was definitely not desirable from the perspective of a Helper.
‘I knew it. This human’s an error. A lethal son of a glitch staining this perfect world!’
The Rabbit glared at Daun Jung with slitted eyes.
‘I’ve got to do something about it.’
* * *
Rumble!
The belly clock rang.
“Ah, so hungry I’m hungry all the time, seriously! Wonder what I should eat this time?”
Make thy choice. Smoked meat or grilled fish?
Even though there were but mere two items on the menu anyway, Daun Jung always pondered over his choice at each mealtime.

“Ugh. Even I’m getting a bit sick of this. Takes me back to college days, when I couldn’t get enough of living on chicken mayo lunch boxes.”
A sigh escaped Daun Jung’s lips as he picked up a piece of smoked meat.
He was not a picky eater.
And he did not easily get tired of one kind of food either; in fact, he was capable of eating the same food dozens of times for days on end when he felt it.
But that was only in the case of proper meals. Food made out of ingredients procured in the dungeon was always lacking spice and thus did not have a rich flavor.
It was then that a good idea flashed across his mind.
“That’s right. Should I make a firepit?”
What if he made a firepit to roast the smoked meat one more time?
“You got to eat meat when it’s hot after all.”
[A firepit? You can even make something like that?]
The Rabbit showed interest.
“Why the heck not? All you need to do is shape it with earth and light a campfire underneath. It takes a bit long to cook over a torch, you see.”
[Humph. Oh a producer indeed.]
Daun Jung immediately summoned earthen bricks in both hands.
Suddenly, however, the Rabbit interrupted with a question.
[You’re not going to make it here, are you? I’m sure the smoke will be horrible if you start roasting meat.
“Oh, you’re right? I didn’t think about ventilation.”
Daun Jung realized the issue upon the Rabbit’s remark.
In truth, the air could be purified using the Purification Skill.
However, if he began to roast meat in earnest, the entire underground would be filled with smoke, and it would be an easy task purifying it all.
[Why don’t you make it right beneath the trap instead? It’ll be good with the smoke going right out.]
“Eh? I see! Yo, what’s up with you? Giving such a good idea like this? Want a piece of meat when I’m done cooking? Ah, or can rabbits not eat since they’re herbivorous?”
The Rabbit yelled angrily at Daun Jung as he raised his thumb admiringly.
[Humph. Why would I not be able to eat? I can eat meat well because I’m a very special rabbit, alright?]
“Mm. A crazy rabbit after al…”
“What did you say, punk?!]
Daun Jung hurried over to the trap area.
* * *
Upon arriving at the trap, he was greeted by the spooky sight of the reset iron skewers.
He first pulled out the skewers.
“I’m sure there’ll be a use for them somewhere.”
And so he obtained 30 additional iron skewers.
Since they would newly reappear each time the dungeon was reset even if they were all pulled out, he thought it a good idea to collect them in advance.
Suddenly, he felt his gaze drawn to the wide-open ceiling of the trap.
‘If it’s just climbing up, I could do so by piling dirt from down here.’
That was but a pipe dream, however.
Hell lay waiting above, after all.
The final site of the ruins was the most dangerous place in Stage-1.
In particular, the area above was infested with monsters guarding the treasure chest.
‘Yet that treasure chest turned out to be fake.’
Daun Jung smiled bitterly to himself upon recalling seeing the empty treasure chest just before falling down here.
The treasure chest was only bait to lure in participants, to begin with.
“Whatever. Enough with the depressing thoughts. It’s time to eat!”
Meat was the answer when feeling down!
He began to make a firepit in a corner of the trap zone in earnest.
“First, dig a little of the ground. Clump Dirt!”
Digging was now as easy as breathing to him.
First, he dug a pit about two feet wide and one foot deep.
Then, he spread out the sticky earth that he had just dug inside of it.
This sticky earth would later be roasted and become hard as a rock.
He smeared it meticulously around the edges as well to leave no cracks.
With that, the place to burn firewood was complete, after which he piled a wide earthen wall over it.
Now this was finished in just an instant.
A refrain of stacking bricks!
A single gesture and bricks were piled up like candy, five at a time.
Like so, he created a square box with a large hole above the pit.
He took out several of the iron skewers he had collected moments ago and placed them side by side in reasonable intervals on top of the hole.
The skewers were grill substitutes.
And when it came to dirty things, he would solve it with a single cast of Purification!
“Ah. There should be an air hole too.”
Oxygen was required to burn.
To allow good airflow towards the firewood, he drilled out several holes using an iron skewer at the bottom of the earthen walls.
“Ta-da. Done.”
[So fast? Isn’t it kind of awkward?]
“It’s not. This is enough to be considered great. Not like I’m going to make a furnace or whatnot. I’m going to roast meat at most. Want to see?”
Daun Jung immediately lit the torch and put it in the fireplace of the pit.
As for firewood, he used empty water bottles as substitutes.
These water bottles, plundered from monster colonies, were made out of none other than dry bamboo, after all.
And how well they burned, crackling.
“It would have been better if I had charcoal, but I may as well make some later. I’ll be satisfied with this for now!”
He watched as the bamboo slowly caught on fire, then he began spreading smoked meat over the makeshift grill.
The smell of cooking meat filled the trap zone within moments.
“Heheh. Nice.”
Daun Jung’s face was full of anticipation.
Saliva pooled inside his mouth.
He picked up a piece of meat, ripe for the taking, and blew on it some before popping it in his mouth.
“Wohaw! Wuah!”
Soft and sweet juice burst inside his mouth!
A wave of stirring emotion came rolling in from the tip of his tongue!
He had done naught but to cook it on fire, yet the smoked meat he had been eating every day became something completely different and endowed him with utter delight.
“How ’bout a bite?”
He held out a piece of meat for the Rabbit even as he shed tears of emotion.
It was a hateful fellow, but there was no harm in striking up a friendship now that it was his sole company to talk with.
The Rabbit’s reaction was pointed, however.
[Humph. Just go and enjoy yourself.]
“Really? It’s meat though? You’re not going to eat?”
It was incomprehensible to him.
He asked several more times, but the Rabbit did not eat in the end.
Regardless, that day was a party day.
“Ah, so full. Think I’ll sleep now.”
[Going to sleep every other moment. Eat and sleep, eat, and sleep. What a total bum.]
“Then what else is there for me to do apart from sleeping?”
[Mm? Eh?]
“I should sleep after eating. Sleep when I’m full. Sleep when I’m sleepy. Sleep when I have nothing to do. Sleep when I don’t want to stand. Sleeping after watching the fish for a bit. Sleep after doing some digging. Sleeping is the way to go.”
[…….]
Indeed.
What good was there other than sleeping here, where there was nothing?
The Rabbit was lost for words at Daun Jung’s reply.
And so he returned to his earthen bed and fell asleep in an instant, while the Rabbit looked on incredulously.
But its incredulity lasted only for a moment.
The Rabbit’s mouth turned up in a wicked smile.
[Oh yes. I do hope you enjoyed your final supper. Eheheh.]
Daun Jung had not a clue.
He was not able to predict in the least what threats his actions today would pose to himself.
At that moment in time, above the trap zone.
A monster just so happened to be passing by…
Sniff-sniff. Grunt?
It was a one-horned boar, which had caught the smell of something tasty.
And it was starved.
Grunt!

Leon has two years to climb the tower, with the help of the few people willing to try, while Ai, the tutorial guide, makes things harder for them. ***** The story starts pretty dark but goes onto a lighter tone. Then (more) dark again. Disclaimer: This story is an experimental project and I hope to get any and all feedback you can give me. Warning: First draft. Chapters tend to be between 3400-4100 words long (about 8-11 A4-pages). Mentioning it since I've seen it in other fictions :P Sometimes they're shorter, sometimes they're longer. ******************************** CHAPTER RELEASES UPDATE: As the first "book" in the series is done, I'm going to release coming chapters somewhat sporadically, and when Writathon ends, I'll probably go back to publishing one chapter per weekend. We'll just have to wait and see! I hope you enjoy the story! I really appreciate all comments and feedback, so if you have anything to say, feel free to voice it :) ************ [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
