Chapter 1010: Accountable for All Citizens

He was a man who kept his promises, not easily breaking his words. Once he made a promise, it would be forever.

Her heart melted when he called her ‘Baby’.

This man wasn’t one who used affectionate words like this. He would always call her ‘little rascal’, ‘little lass’. This was his first time calling her ‘Baby’.

An’an stretched out both arms, hugging his trim waist. “Mm, I’ll be good and listen to you. Go into your battlefield, I’ll wait here for you to return. You must come back quickly.”

She didn’t raise any questions and wasn’t curious about anything. She just wanted to wait for him to come back.

“I’ll leave now, go back to sleep.”

Lu Yan let go of her, striding out of the room.

He left.

The man’s imposing figure disappeared before her eyes. The room door was closed and An’an lay on the bed. She buried her face in the blankets and took a deep breath. It still smelled like his clean, masculine scent. It smelled really good.

Huddling up under the blankets, it felt so warm and comfortable. As she placed her hand on her tummy, she touched it gently and the corners of her lips quirked up. Little Yan, let’s wait for Daddy to be back together.

Daddy would come back very soon.

He definitely would.

In the jungle.

A few bulletproof Jeeps arrived.

The back door pulled open, Lu Yan alighted from the Jeep, dressed in his brand new camouflage combat uniform. He had a black leather belt fastened around his waist and thick army boots on his feet, his entire countenance immaculate as he was calm and collected.

Li Si also alighted from the Jeep, looking at his watch to check the time. “General, it’s time for the training. Why isn’t anyone here yet?”

There wasn’t even a single soul at the training grounds in front, it was eerily silent.

Lu Yan pursed his lips. He suddenly heard some abnormal sounds.

With an eagle-like gaze that was sharp and precise, he shouted, “Come out!”

The confidential secretary slowly walked out, a group of armed men in black had also appeared and surrounded them.

Li Si’s expression changed. “It’s you?”

The confidential secretary sneered. “I’ve called off the training today using the General’s name. No one will come today, you’ve been surrounded by my people. General Lu, just surrender now.”

Lu Yan slowly raised the corners of his lips. “You’ve been lying low by General Chen’s side while coveting his spot all these years. Qianqian is your biological daughter. 20 years ago, General Chen had been busy protecting our nation and neglected his wife. You took the chance to use honeyed words, often gifting her with presents, eventually having an illicit affair with General Chen’s wife.

“General Chen’s wife got pregnant and gave birth to Qianqian. But she was guilt-ridden and with your endless pestering, it all compounded and she suffered severe depression. She eventually passed away after all the negative feelings consumed her.

“You and Qianqian have already confirmed your ties with each other long ago. You two are really father-daughter, both having such wicked hearts. Qianqian likes me and you took my father’s records away and framed General Chen for doing it. You’ve been consolidating your power while working for General Chen all this time.

“But you never would have been able to anticipate General Chen to report to the higher ups just because of me. The application was even approved almost immediately and I became the new General.

“You are no longer willing to wait any longer. You’re going to take the chance, now that I’m still fresh in office and General Chen is still lying unconscious in the hospital, you want me to stay in this jungle forever, as a corpse!”

“Ha, ha ha.” The confidential secretary laughed out loud. “Blood Eagle, you’re indeed formidable. You deserve Chen Jin’s admiration. He practically treated you as his own son, nurturing you so painstakingly. You’re right, you’re absolutely correct! I’ve worked so hard by Chen Jin’s side all these years, the new General should have been me, without a doubt. Why is it you instead, just why?!”

The confidential secretary was clearly indignant, his face contorted with jealousy and greed, making him appear just plain disgusting.

A cold and stern voice was heard from behind. “Why? I’d also like to ask you, why? What makes you think you deserve it all?”

The confidential secretary froze. This voice?

He quickly turned around, it was Chen Jin behind him.

The confidential secretary just couldn’t believe his own eyes and they bulged out into two globes. “Sh-Shouldn’t you be lying in the hospital now?”

Chen Jin gave this confidential secretary of his, a cold-eyed stare. “You thought that the poison meant for An’an was eaten by me? I haven’t been poisoned at all. I was just waiting for you to make a move, to see your true colors!”

The confidential secretary’s face turned pale. He finally realized that he had fallen into a trap. Chen Jin and Lu Yan had set up this well-made trap.

Now that he was caught red-handed, all of those connections of his had been uprooted together with him.

For the past month, Lu Yan and Chen Jin laid low just to catch the confidential secretary right in the act.

The confidential secretary had been defeated.

“You want to become the General, but do you even know what qualities the General needs to have in him?

“You don’t understand exactly why I wanted Lu Yan as my successor. That’s because you’ve never been on a rocky path, getting hurt by thousands of spikes on his journey. You’ve never been in the darkness, awaiting for the light to come. You’ve never given up on your love just for your nation. He did all of that, but you’ve never gone through even one of such events.

“You don’t have perseverance, tough bones, or the pure vision to become the General. This position and all of its power is given by the citizens of our nation. To stay in this position, you must also serve our people well, you’re going to be accountable for all citizens!”

Chen Jin spoke so powerfully, every word made a strong impression in everyone’s heart.

To climb all the way up to this position, who hadn’t made such sacrifices? It was only today he learned that Qianqian wasn’t his biological daughter.

Back then, he had an arranged marriage with his late wife. She had been a clean and innocent woman before her marriage and even after she married him, she remained virtuous. Though they didn’t have much love for each other, their marriage was a smooth one of mutual respect.

He hadn’t known that he had been cheated on.

After they wedded, he had to spend a few years as an undercover outside. He hadn’t gone home in a few years, it was at that time the confidential secretary took the chance and ruined his marriage.

The confidential secretary was distraught. All of the bad things he had done had been exposed, he had nowhere to hide now.

With things coming to such a state, he could only give it his last shot. The confidential secretary shouted with his face all contorted. “Kill them!”

In the hotel room.

An’an had an entire afternoon’s sleep. The sun rays seeped through the curtain, beaming down on her. She slowly opened her eyes and woke up. It was hard to believe how she suddenly loved sleeping so much.

A melodious ringtone sounded, she had an incoming phone call.

Reaching over, she picked up her phone. It was a call from her mother, Huo Yanmei.

She tapped on the screen to pick up the call. “Hello, Mom.”

“An’an, tell Mom the truth. Did Lu Yan cast you aside once he became the General? What nonsense is this, how dare he neglect my daughter like that. Haven’t you done enough for him!

“Don’t worry, An’an. Mom is going to look for Lu Yan now. I found out that he’s having training in the jungle. I’m already here now and I’m going to make a fuss at the training grounds. If he doesn’t give me a satisfactory answer today, let’s see how he’s going to continue remaining as General!”
