Chapter 1076: The Master of the Ocean
Everyone was dumbstruck upon hearing this.
Heavenly Dao, sentient will of the world, self-regulation, ocean…
All of these concepts seemed extremely absurd and far-fetched.
“The Ancient Heavenly Fiendcelestial had a special power, which allowed it to control all water-type spell techniques. That was actually a power bestowed upon it by the Heavenly Dao.
“In order to self-regulate, representatives of the Heavenly Dao were born, and the representative governing the ocean was an extremely important one. Not only did it govern water, but it also governed wind, lightning, the climate… It could bestow its power upon the Ancient Heavenly Fiendcelestial, so it was also capable of bestowing its power upon one of us…”
Many of the mighty figures were already breathing heavily upon hearing this.
This was the power of the Heavenly Dao! This was a paramount power, which presented an indescribably massive temptation!
“Senior Xi Haizi and Senior Tian Chenji referred to that representative of the Heavenly Dao as the Heavenly Sea God as it really was a god.
“This Heavenly Sea God is a part of the Heavenly Dao, but it is too powerful, and its presence in the Tai Chu Continent would result in the annihilation of this world, which is why it is unable to enter the Tai Chu Continent itself. In other words, it is secluding itself in another realm in order to maintain the stability of this world.
“At some point in time, it suddenly began to view the human race as an unstable factor in this world, which was why it decided to deploy the Ancient Heavenly Fiendcelestial into the Tai Chu Continent in order to destroy the human race. However, the living being it had created had most of its power restricted upon entering the Tai Chu Continent, thereby making it extremely weak, and it perished before it even made it out of the West Sea…
“The world will place restrictions on representatives of the Heavenly Dao when it tried to self-regulate the world. This concept feels really conflicted and paradoxical, as if it’s fighting with itself, but it’s actually like the subconsciousness of the world trying to maintain homeostasis and stability.
“Hence, a thought occurred to the Heavenly Sea God after meeting with the two High Priests. If it could bestow its power upon a living being of this world, wouldn’t it be able to bypass this restriction?”

An Lin and Lan Xiaoni exchanged another silent look. Lan Xiaoni had most likely inherited the power of the Heavenly Sea God…
This was quite a terrifying concept, and it was clear that the restriction of the world had not affected Lan Xiaoni. Her power had not been weakened at all, and she was still thriving just as she always did.
“The Heavenly Sea God promised to bestow its power upon one of the tribal successors under the condition that they would use this power to rule over the West Sea and destroy the human race. However… Not just any living being has a chance to inherit this power. The power of the Heavenly Sea God can only be inherited by a living being below the Return to Void Stage and who has a Chaotic Water Spirit Root from birth.”
All of the Spirit Fish Clan mighty figures looked at each other before looking at Lan Xiaoni.
Lan Xingyang immediately inquired, “Little Ni, you’ve had a Chaotic Water Spirit Root from birth, haven’t you? Did you encounter that Heavenly Sea God?”
Lan Xiaoni shook her head with a blank expression. “I didn’t. The two former High Priests didn’t mention this to me. Perhaps I’m not the fated one?”
Lan Xingyang nodded with a skeptical expression but did not press the issue any further.
“The two High Priests agreed to the conditions proposed by the Heavenly Sea God, and they set forth to find a living being that could fit this description. The power of the Heavenly Dao simply presented too much of a temptation. Any living being who inherited this power would be able to lead the two tribes to new heights!
“They used the last of their life forces to build their combined tomb and also made one last star divination to glean the fate of the two tribes. After that, they made a key and waited for the day when the fated ones would arrive.
“The two High Priests only had a very vague feeling about when the fated ones would arrive. During the countless years that have passed, there have been many exceptional prodigies with Chaotic Water Spirit Root from birth that appeared in this world, but none of them was the catalyst to set everything into motion.

“Time passed by all the way up until that Purple Star incident, which vindicated the Heavenly Sea God’s words… The two High Priests finally decided to reveal this secret to the world. They manipulated the stars to cast a blessing on the first living being with a Chaotic Water Spirit Root from birth that was born since the Purple Star incident. They would then wait for them to progress to the Soul Formation Pinnacle Stage before allowing them to enter the tomb and accepting their entire inheritances.
“As for how to execute the missions to rule over the West Sea and destroy the human race, they said… that the living being who inherited the power of the Heavenly Dao would know what to do. That is the extent of the information.”
When Gu Yu’s voice fell, all of the mighty figures turned in unison to look at Lan Xiaoni.
Lan Xiaoni trembled as she retreated a couple of steps with a confused expression. “Why are you all looking at me? I already said I’m not the fated one, and I didn’t inherit the power!”
Yu Feiyu looked at her with an elated, doting smile. “Princess, you are the only living being with a Chaotic Water Spirit Root from birth that was born after the Purple Star incident. That can’t be a coincidence, could it? There has also been no new key placed in the tomb, which indicates that the two High Priests have completed their missions.”
Lan Xiaohuang chimed in with a disbelieving expression, “Big sister, why are you hiding something this bad*ss? You’re going to be the Queen of the West Sea.”
Lan Xiaoni’s father, Lan Xingyang, already had a wide grin plastered across his face.
All of the Spirit Fish Clan mighty figures were jumping for joy.
“Sigh… I didn’t think I would encounter something this heartbreaking in my old age…” Gu Yu sighed with a resigned expression.
It could already envision itself being stepped on by Lan Xiaoni en route to her domination over the West Sea.
All of the Heavenly Turtle Tribe mighty figures were extremely distraught, and some of them were even looking at Lan Xiaoni with enmity in their eyes.
Lan Xiaoni was still trying to convince everyone that she had not inherited the power, but all of them brushed aside her words, thinking that she only refused to admit it because she was scared… That’s right, no matter how Lan Xiaoni tried to deny it, no one would believe her.
She turned to An Lin for help.
At this moment, most of the mighty figures present also turned to An Lin.
Some of them wore thoughtful expressions, while some had killing intent glinting within their eyes. Meanwhile, the rest of them were settling down in preparation for a good show.
An Lin was the only human here.
It was clear that he was going to be a traitor!
They had revealed the secret to everyone present and was preparing to discuss how to destroy the human race in secret, only to have a human listening in on their conversation with keen interest. This didn’t seem right, did it?
Not many how you thought about it, this was a bizarre situation!
An Lin’s face convulsed. What was it like to be stared at by a bunch of Return to Void Stage mighty figures, as well as a total of five Dao Integration Stage super mighty figures, including Gu Yu, Yu Feiyu, and Lan Xingyang?
Things seemed to have spiraled a little out of his control…
“Hmm… I suddenly remembered that you’re a human…”
“He’s the sect leader of the Four Nine Immortal Sect, An Lin! I’ve heard of him!”
“He heard our secret! We have to eliminate him right here, right now!”
“An Lin is extremely powerful, and he has the backing of the Heavenly Court. Would it be wise to kill him like this?”
“Don’t forget that we have a mission assigned to us by the Heavenly Dao! We have to destroy the entire human race and that includes the Heavenly Court! What are you afraid of?”
All of the mighty figures discussed among one another while cold sweat poured down An Lin’s face.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

Silhouette
WARNING: THIS STORY HAS A SLOW START. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. We all grew up hearing stories about heroes and villains, but what would we do if we were to be part of one? Now a strange creature made of darkness, James has to deal with his new form in a strange new world where superpowers, heroes and villains are commonplace, far away from his home. Watch as he learns how to use his powers, as he meets allies and enemies and how, when facing the paths of heroism and villainy, he chooses a third way somewhere in between. Follow the story of James, a lost Earthling soul, as he becomes Silhouette, the mysterious power in the shadows. Greetings fellow humans. This is my first story on Royal Road and my first long-term project written in English, so I do hope you will have some mercy in your heart when reading. So, as you may have understood, this is a story with super-heroes - which is quite ironic for my first story considering all of the other ones planned are fantasy - and as such will take place in a modern-like setting. Despite dark themes and gory scenes making their way into the story, it is still a super-hero world with the logic that matches, so expect characters to survive nuclear explosions without a scratch and yet to get defeated by a rubber ducky - as well as similar dark humor, thus the comedy part.
