The angle chosen by the giant python was extremely tricky—it was evidently a route that was chosen after summarizing several earlier attacks. Its body was tilted slightly, making it able to bite the giant tortoise's leg but preventing the tortoise from biting it.

It is one of four mythological creatures appearing in Chinese constellations (as mentioned by the same commenter), namely: the Azure Dragon of the East (青龍), the Vermilion Bird of the South (朱雀), the White Tiger of the West (白虎), and the Black Warrior of the North. The pinyin of the Black Warrior's name (玄武= Xuánwǔ) is identical to the Daoist God Xuanwu who may sometimes be portrayed in the company of a tortoise and snake, as seen in Journey to the West.
