《Ranker's Return》Chapter 640

“I’ll lure him this time. You will deal the real attack. Understood?” Reina told the purple bear, the magic spirit. The magic spirit didn’t answer with words but nodded. Then Reina swung her sword and attacked the marquis. As the ice poured out from Reina’s sword, the demon summoned and threw a mass of flames, the opposite attribute. Unlike the other two marquises, the one fighting against Reina and the magic spirit had two attributes: dark and fire.
White ice and black flames tangled together. As the ice met the flames, it started to melt, and the floor became wet in an instant. Just then, the magic spirit that seemed to be standing still behind Reina moved. The magic spirit’s body stretched out and touched the marquis.
A powerful shockwave burst upon contact and pushed the marquis’ body back. The marquis coughed up blood violently. The magic spirit’s strike was pretty intimidating. Blinded by Reina’s attack, the marquis hadn’t noticed the existence of the magic spirit until it was close to him.
“Today is the last...” the demon, Marquis Lonyu, muttered. Two marquises had already lost their lives. After the death of Damanos, who was the head of the force and its largest cornerstone, the three marquises here had been guarding the force earnestly. Now that two marquises had lost their lives, Lonyu knew what Damanos’ force fate would be.
‘It is impossible to live,’ Marquis Lonyu thought. There wasn’t even a glimmer of hope. Marquis Lonyu knew very well that it was impossible to fight and win. He was confident in beating the little bear and human woman in front of him, but he wasn’t confident about beating the two humans on the other side. In particular, the one human being with a fearsome aura was the biggest problem.
‘He is at least at the level of a duke...’
Marquis Lonyu didn’t know this person’s actual power, but the pressure the person emitted was comparable to Damanos’.
‘Given that Marquis Paya and Marquis Rudubit held on for quite a while, he isn’t at the level of a demon king.’
Even so, he couldn’t be optimistic. It was true that Hyeonu was weaker than a demon king, but he was still stronger than Marquis Lonyu.
“At the very least, I will kill you guys. It is my role and duty,” Marquis Lonyu declared.
Enormous energy incomparable to before poured out from Marquis Lonyu’s body. It was running wild. Marquis Lonyu used his life as collateral to make the magic power in his body go wild. It was referred to as collateral, but he was actually giving up his life.
Nine out of 10 times, one would die when their magic power went wild. Even if they won the battle, they would die from being unable to overcome the aftereffects. Nevertheless, there was no hesitation or regret in Marquis Lonyu. He thought he was sacrificing himself for the benefit of the entire demon world by killing the human being in front of him. What he didn’t know was that Reina was an adventurer who would be revived even if she died.

“Reina, I will fight from now on.” Just then, Hyeonu appeared in front of Reina and the magic spirit with a ghost-like movement. No one had noticed him move. It was the same even for Tang-E standing next to Hyeonu.
“You. I will talk with you later,” Hyeonu said while staring at the magic spirit. Then he turned to face Marquis Lonyu. The opponent in front of Hyeonu was releasing a pressure too formidable for him to continue paying attention to the magic spirit.
‘I’m glad the buffs are still present.’
The duration of the buffs had less than a minute left, but this was enough for Hyeonu. The Mysterious Sky Sword made a wonderful sound as it was drawn from the sheath and revealed to the world. At the same time, Hyeonu started to move without hesitation. His movements were like the magic spirit’s. He stretched out his body like melted cheese, just like when the magic spirit dealt a blow to the marquis earlier.
Hyeonu arrived in front of Marquis Lonyu and quickly swung the Mysterious Sky Sword, which was instantly colored purple. Marquis Lonyu reached out with both hands and deflected the Mysterious Sky Sword. Black flames were burning around his hands. This time, he wasn’t beaten like he had been with the magic spirit. It was because the overwhelming mana he gained from his runaway magic power enabled him to respond to the attack.
Marquis Lonyu successfully defended against Hyeonu’s attack and prepared for a counterattack. The fire around Marquis Lonyu’s fists became even greater. Eventually, Marquis Lonyu’s fists grew to nearly one meter in size
Marquis Lonyu quickly extended his two fists to Hyeonu. A huge fist filled Hyeonu’s vision.
‘It’s very hot.’ Hyeonu frowned at the heat he felt from beyond his mask. However, that was it. It was annoying, but it wasn’t intimidating at all. During the time while the buffs were maintained, Hyeonu swung the Mysterious Sky Sword again. He swung twice this time, from left to right and from right to left.
The Mysterious Sky Sword collided with Marquis Lonyu, but Hyeonu didn’t take a step back. He stood in place and attacked Marquis Lonyu. Then he turned around naturally and swung the Mysterious Sky Sword. A huge purple crescent moon flew toward Marquis Lonyu.
The flames around Marquis Lonyu’s heart increased even further. He swung his fist, which had become a rock. Marquis Lonyu was aiming to break the crescent moon that was emitting a serious light.
The crescent moon collided with the huge rock. The aftermath was huge. The ground turned over, and the noise filled the sky. Dust rose thickly to the point where one’s vision of what was in front of them couldn’t be guaranteed.
“What is going on?” Reina looked momentarily flustered due to the situation where she couldn’t see at all. She couldn’t see the results. There was nothing visible at all. Just then, she saw something moving between the dirt.

‘A sword!’
It was a sword that emitted light. The fact that the sword was moving meant that Hyeonu was moving. This was because Marquis Lonyu didn’t use weapons.
Another huge explosion broke out. Simultaneously, a powerful shockwave swept through the ground. Most of the dust filling the air disappeared, allowing the current situation to become clearly visible.
Hyeonu held the Mysterious Sky Sword that was still emitting a purple light. Meanwhile, Marquis Lonyu was using the black flames to hold the Mysterious Sky Sword. They seemed to have stopped, but they were actually fighting fiercely, more so than anyone else.
‘This isn’t very satisfactory...’ Hyeonu frowned at the actions of Marquis Lonyu, who held the Mysterious Sky Sword and refused to let go. It was an unwanted situation. Marquis Lonyu realized there was no chance of winning the battle, so he clung to Hyeonu and started a power fight through magic power. He poured out magic power recklessly. It was a terrifying amount. This wasn’t called a magic power rampage for nothing.
‘I can kill him...’ Marquis Lonyu smiled slightly when he felt Hyeonu’s unhappiness with the situation. He thought that if it continued this way, he would be able to kill Hyeonu. Just then, Marquis Lonyu noticed a change in Hyeonu’s expression. Although he couldn’t see everything due to Hyeonu’s mask, he could see Hyeonu’s curved eyes through the open space.
‘He’s smiling?’
This human was smiling. The clear curve of the eyes definitely only appeared when someone was smiling.
‘Why is he smiling? Until just now...’ Marquis Longyu’s mind became complicated. Hyeonu’s change plunged him into chaos. At this moment, there was a piercing sound.
“Cough!” Marquis Lonyu frowned at the sudden pain, which caused him to lose control of his magic power. The magic power pouring through Marquis Lonyu’s arm moved recklessly. Things that were previously only shot at Hyeonu were now shot into the sky and the ground.
“H…How...?” Marquis Lonyu questioned when he saw the small hole that formed in his heart.
“Think about it... I’m not alone,” Hyeonu said while stroking the head of the magic spirit sitting on his shoulder.
‘It is quick to catch on,’ Hyeonu thought.
The wound in Marquis Lonyu was made by the magic spirit. When the magic spirit saw that Hyeonu had entered a power fight with Marquis Lonyu, it moved straight away. It changed position from Reina’s side on the battlefield, passed through Hyeonu’s body, and shoved its right paw into Marquis Lonyu’s body. This was possible because the magic spirit was made of Hyeonu’s magic power.
“So it was like that...” Marquis Lonyu lamented and collapsed.
[The demon world marquis, Lonyu, has been defeated.]
[Experience has been acquired.]
[You have leveled up.]
[All health and magic power have been restored.]
[Demon nobles killed 22/???]
Hyeonu’s level rose once again. He gained three levels just today.
‘Amazing.’
As his level increased, the speed of the rise slowed down. So it had been noticeably slower in this period of time. Hyeonu might level up faster than others, but even he couldn’t escape such a swamp.
‘Status Window.’
Hyeonu checked his status window. Now that he leveled up, he had to distribute his stat points.
[Status Window]
[Character Name: Gang Hyeonu
Level: 350
Class: Preliminary Commander of the Knights of Keon
Title: Master of the Throne and 40 others.
Stats: Strength: 1,160 (+6,400) Agility: 1722 (+6,350) Physique: 912 (+6,350) Magic Power: 1,907 (+6,600) Fighting Energy: 1,239 (+6,150) Dignity: 852 (+6,150) Killing Intent: 753 (+6,150)
Remaining stat points: 15
Retained Attributes: Chaos]
‘It is finally halfway.’
Hyeonu had finally reached level 350. Something else would be waiting for him at level 400, just like it had been so far.
‘I wish for my next class to be a bit better...’
Even now, he had nothing to regret. However, he had a desire to have more efficient and useful attack skills.
‘Magic power is fine...’
Hyeonu distributed his stat points properly to agility and strength and closed the status window. Then he picked up the items that had fallen to the ground. Marquis Lonyu dropped two items—a ring and a book with a black cover.
‘The ring is probably that... I’ll check the book later.’
The ring was definitely the ring that indicated the master of the city that was under Marquis Lonyu’s control. It was the right to absorb magic power from the magic power stone.
Hyeonu collected the items from Marquis Lonyu before recovering the things dropped by Marquis Rudubit and Marquis Paya in turn. In doing so, he acquired three rings, a long sword left by Marquis Paya, a bead left by Marquis Rudubit, and a book from Marquis Longyu.
‘I’ll share them except for the rings.’
He didn’t have to tell Reina about the rings. They were items that would be of no use to her. Reina didn’t know the location of the city, and even if she knew, she didn’t have the ability to go there. He would rather give her another item.
‘I’ll confirm it later...’
The distribution of items wasn’t an urgent need. That was something he could do later. The important thing now was something else.
Hyeonu grabbed the magic spirit, who was smiling with an innocent expression, and placed it in front of him. “Hey, what the hell are you?”

Mana Soul
Like many others across the multiverse, Markus was chosen as this world's hero to fight against the steadily approaching cataclysm. Only, something went horribly wrong. Left with only a handful of memories, Markus has spent years clawing his way up from poverty and officially registered as an adventurer to try and make his fortune. Unfortunately, Artificers are the least combat-capable class of the four classes, and Markus has no connections to join an established party. With the fate of countless worlds hanging in the balance, a chance meeting will determine the course of a war nearly as old as reality itself. Warning: Markus has trauma induced amnesia and will occasionally 'act out of character' or make 'poorly thought out' decisions. These events are rather obvously telegraphed abd represent conflicts between his current personality and the one repressed alongside his trauma. Just something to bear in mind. The story will bounce predominantly back and forth between the primary protagonists every couple of chapters. The time stream is linear, so events are not revisted/rehashed/retold through the narrative format. Characters may comment on something that has occurred, but that's different. Just giving a heads up.Chapters will be around 7-9k and updated 1/week on the same schedule as my other story Ogre Tyrant over the weekend.[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

Sarsaparilla's Scary Super Power. Completed
Sarsaparilla is an older teenage girl living on Mars. And, like many other young people around her, she has a super power. Or, rather, she is supposed to have a super power. Only she has never been able to activate it, she doesn’t even know what her super power is. This annoys her, tremendously. But she hides this behind a really sweet smile. Adalace is another teenage girl, also on Mars. She knows what her own super power is, and it is quite a good one. She is also really cute… so long has she keeps her feelings under control and doesn’t let out anything from her dark past. Teylon is a man, currently living on Earth. He likes to think of himself as still young, even if he is over fifty. He’s a bit smug about his successful career and is thinking of retiring… until a sadly unfortunate event leads him to the conclusion that he had better immigrate to Mars. Immediately. Apparently, meeting one’s own Angel of Death tends to cause people to make profound changes to their lives… Mars society had better brace itself, because once these three people, plus another three also not so quite stable individuals, collide with each other, the resulting explosion is not going to leave anyone on Mars unaffected. This is another Esmeralda, the Angel of Death, story. It follows on from my previous two such stories, but it is in no way dependent on the previous stories. They can be read in any order. It is fully written and proof read (using Word for Windows, no real editor touched this transcript) and comes to about 247,000 words (about 895 Royal Road pages). It is organized into 50 chapters and I will be publishing them roughly one per day. In my writing, there are multiple characters and multiple points of view. Each change in a point of view is introduced by a header, giving the viewpoint character’s name first, and possibly a title. Inside a Point of View section, dialog in italics represents the Point of View character’s thoughts, while dialog between quotes represent normal spoken dialog. This story is very much inspired by the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun. However I have only taken some elements from the anime, and changed everything I took to make my own story, and so it does not count as fanfiction. Yeah, I know, the book cover page isn’t very good. It’s the best I could do, by tracing over a stock image. The two ladies shown are supposed to be Adalace and Sarsaparilla. Ideally I would have liked there to be two images of this pair, one where they are smiling sweetly and looking cute, and one where they are looking really angry and dangerous. But that totally exceeds my graphics abilities. You will just have to imagine it.
