《The Hero Without a Past》Chapter Thirty-Two: Detective Work

Anne and I sat at a restaurant downtown.
The ‘fighting pits’ were not, as one would expect, in the middle of nowhere. No, they were located in a basement gym under one of the well-maintained offices in the city.
The building, Torrance Towers, rose thirty floors into the air, and was surrounded by coffee shops, mini-malls, and small restaurants. Nor was it the only one - close to a dozen office buildings lined the same street.
In short, the perfect picture of a bustling office district, full of law-abiding citizens.
“Doesn’t seem like a venue for criminals,” muttered Anne as we sat in our booth.
“That’s what makes it so perfect,” I replied. “Are you able to see anything yet?”
“The bots are in the gym,” Anne said. “Scanning the place, I’m getting a good picture so far.”
“Describe it to me.” I flicked through the menus, on a conveniently placed touchscreen. “Do you want the chicken alfredo or the spaghetti bolognaise?”
“Both, please. …. Wow, that’s a lot of people. And they’re crammed cheek-to-cheek, too.”
“So, not social distancing compliant?” I punched in Anne’s orders and added a small steak for myself.
“Not at all. People are waving hundred dollar bills in the air…. Okay, there’s guys picking up the bills and handing them tickets.”
“Betting slips.”
“I’m guessing. There’s two blokes in the ring - they’re slamming away at each other. Eww, that’s disgusting.”
“What?”
“One guy just bit the other’s ear off.”
“Ouch.”
“Now the other guy is grabbing the first one’s crotch… ouch, that’s gotta hurt. Heh. He’s pounding the guy’s head into the mat.”
“The ref not stopping them?”
“The ref’s waving his hands. Looks like Vincent Van Gogh is the winner.”

“Isn’t this more Evander Holyfield versus Mike Tyson?”
“Whatever, the guy whose ear got bit off won. Ref’s holding his hand up. Umm. The other guy isn’t moving….. There’s a couple of guys carrying him off.”
“Unconscious?”
“Hope so. Can’t tell from this range. Huh. Okay, I see two battlesuits.”
“Type?”
“Can’t tell. Standard lasers, though, and they look identical.”
So, Soldier or Lieutenant battlesuits. Likely Soldier, there were still thirteen of them left. “Anything else interesting?”
“There’s a row in front with a bunch of guys in suits. Not battlesuits, formal jacket and tie type suits.”
“At a prizefight?”
“Yeah. The suits look expensive, too. They’re shaking hands with someone….. Huh. That face looks familiar.” Anne frowned. “I’ve seen them somewhere…”
“You recognized someone there?”
“Yeah….” Anne’s eyes widened. “Oh, crap. I think I know.”
“Who is it?”
“Wait a minute.” Anne pulled out her smartphone and typed something. “Here. That’s the guy.”
I stared at the picture
Morgan Aldiss
Mayor of Tanisport (2079 - Present)
“The mayor’s here?” I exclaimed.
“Quiet,” Anne whispered. Fortunately, between the half-empty restaurant and the booth’s soundproof windows, no-one seemed to have heard us. “Yes, the mayor’s here.”
“How? This is supposed to be an illegal prizefight! The press will have his head if they find out….”
“I don’t know….. Maybe the Grunters paid him off.”
“That’s…. really crooked, on so many levels.”
“Politicians being crooked is nothing new.”
“I guess.” Anne sounded disappointed. “You know, Dad used to say that Aldiss was different. Dedicated, honest, hard-working.”
“Paul Drake wouldn’t be the first honest man to be deceived by a politician.”
“Yeah, I suppose. What does this mean? Do we hit it anyway?”
“Not if this operation has the tacit support of the mayor.” I thought for a second. “We may need to check out the other location - the ranch he spoke about. Less likely that they’ll have politicians there.”

An Unwilling Monster
In the city of Kholakel, the highlight of the year for the upper classes is the annual monster pacification of the misty woods. Ostensibly it's a culling of the monster population to prevent them encroaching on urban areas, but it's an open secret that it's actually treated as more of a blood sport, the participants competing to score the most kills. After all, why else would the politicians and elites of the city bother to attend personally? Given the intense competition and high-tech weapons and gear in use, one might wonder how the forest has not yet been completely depopulated. As this year's culling approaches, a group of unfortunate children are about to discover the answer first-hand, but thanks to an unexpected twist of fate, one of them will score the chance to play the role of the hunter instead of the prey. This was an attempt at writing something darker than my usual fare. The story I actually ended up with isn't as mean to the MC as I'd originally planned out, to the point that I'm not sure the story deserves the horror/grimdark tags anymore, but this is still an unfair world with unambiguously evil antagonists. Chapters are short to start with, but get longer once the first act is over.

A Castle in a Teacup
One might say that to anger forces beyond the ken of fragile breakable mortals is a bad idea, others might say that meddling in dark forces with little chance of gain is also a bad idea, they would both be right by on all counts but they forget to mention also how incredibly stupid combining both of those things are. Stupid people don’t last so long on the mystic side of things, normal folks who wander over to the other side have a tendency to do one of two things, either A. figure out that the best thing to do is keep their head down and not draw attention from any entity that refers to humanity as “you mortals” , or B. something horrifying happens to them. As you may have guessed I fell into the second category, mostly because I thought there was a third option. See I though there must be an option C, an option where I got to end up not as some shitty back ally wizard cowering at the chance of discovery, praying that one of my wards or spells wouldn’t be noticed by something that goes bump in the night. No I would be the one who rose above all that. I would never have to be afraid. Well I made a good attempt at it that’s for damn sure, but unfortunately for me it turns out there is not an option C. At least not for me…

Magikind [Original]
The third millennia, a time of change and evolution. An era, where people, through countless generations, have evolved strange powers and abilities. Through several centuries of selective breeding, these beings, known as mages, have become part of the very foundations of society. However, some refused to change or adapt. They believed in purity and refused to interbreed with magikind. Known as the manush, they were a rarity among society. Now, in the fifth millennia, the manush are thought extinct. With magikind ruling the world, a three-way war grips society. In these uncertain times, a manush called Gin, will herald a new era for all Magikind. A story of how man could realistically evolve while still pushing boundaries. Disclaimer: Chapters will be edited once the first volume is done. Bear the beginning for the time being, and hopefully you can see my writing improving over time (I've learnt a lot on how to write because of this (though I'm still not perfect :P)) Proud Member of Writers to the End, WriTE The link to the pledged fictions PS. If you find the 'notes' too boring or too info-dumpy, feel free to skip them and just read the main chapters. They're there for the reader to understand Gin's world (written in the perspective of Gin). But later on, we can see some interactions between the main characters and the occasional references to his past in the notes, so it has its purpose.
