《Red Mist》46. Prelude, The Second Dance

“The Richards mansion is designed like a fortress,” Tulip said, applying the first bit of eye cream.
Tulip stood back to admire her creation before continuing on.
“A lady can appreciate a good fortress,” Tulip added.
Freya nodded.
“Of course that’s not the only thing to look for in a suitor,” Freya said.
“No, of course not. There’s also having a dungeon where one can quietly question one’s enemies.”
Freya paused to see if Tulip was being serious. The large family mirror, an heirloom of her Grandpaw’s, sat there silently judging her choices in life. She had asked Tulip to do her maquillage because this would be Abigail's big night, and Holly had demurred.
“Tulip?”
“What?”
“Was that last comment meant to be serious? Sometimes you have this dry wit which makes me think you weren’t…”
Tulip once again paused, this time switching to the eyeliner brush. She moved right back into it.
“Anyone else, and I would not tell them this, but… I would much rather prefer a country cottage to a fortress.”
Tulip smiled, and Freya could tell that she was indeed savoring the moment.
“…or a dungeon, right?”
Tulip placed her brush down.
“Obviously. The point being, keep your wits about you. At this point they have seen you or read about you if they’re interested.”
Tulip waved a paw to the mirror as if to illuminate the completion of her work of art.
“Thank you so much. It looks great.”
Tulip’s wry smile was interrupted by tiny paws offering her a sweetroll. Kayli had grown to respect Tulip in the short time she had been there. Furthermore, Kayli was escalating higher and higher with the baked goods to garner Tulip’s favor. After the first biscuit didn’t immediately win Tulip over, a cookie turned into an open faced apple and blueberry galette and then finally Kayli’s favorite cinnamon sweet roll was offered up.

Tulip’s brow crinkled at the offering and it became apparent to Kayli that she’d won the day. The tiny mouse began dancing, as Tulip shrugged.
“I think she likes you.” Freya said, checking her dress.
“She’s aiming for something, so I’ll play along for now. I’m actually curious what she wants that I can provide.”
Two adult mice watched as a tiny mouse grabbed Tulip’s hand, in an attempt to pull her, or lead her.
“Let’s see where this goes, then?” Tulip said, following the gravity of a fully operational toddler.
Tulip wore a yellow dress, straight up and down with a golden bow at the scandalously backless waist. Freya realized that Kayli had stolen the golden yellow bow and was streaking towards the chicken pens at a breakneck speed.
Arriving at the pens, Kayli mewed and Freya could see that she was struggling.
“Go ahead, Kayli. Tell us what is on your mind.” Freya said.
Tulip squatted down.
“Cheee...CAN…” a little squeak of a voice said.
“Chicken? Chicken!” Freya said, grabbing the small mouse.
“Cheee… can!” Kayli said.
Freya sniffed.
“That is her first word, huh?” Tulip said.
“Yes,” Freya said, wiping back tears. “I think she wants to pet the chickens. Do you still have that sweet roll? I’m going to need some energy.”
Tulip handed her the roll, smiling from ear to ear.
“The coach is almost ready, little one,” Tulip said, leaning towards Freya. “But let’s pet some chickens first.
Freya smiled at the mouse who was gaining in not only her estimation, but apparently Kayli’s as well.

Again from Scratch Saga: Izmittor Unchained
If someone precious to you needed your help, would you extend it? Would you still do it if it costs you your peace and perhaps even your life? For Tercius, a man mysteriously reborn nearly thirteen years ago, there was only one answer to both questions. Feeling compelled, he sets out to journey to the northern Sogea and its infamous Western Izmittor mountain range, a natural stronghold of sky tearing mountains and deep canyons. Legends about the place abounded, but he knew without a doubt that the hidden valleys, rushing rivers, thick forests, and desolate landscapes hid powerful predators, the likes of which stalk the harsh terrains for an easy source of meat and bones. The many natural dangers of Western Izmittor would be hard enough to navigate safely for a lone traveler, but to make matters worse Tercius had enemies in the heights of Western Izmittor, humans and spirits who would see him dead if they ever learned of his true connection to the Pyramid of Tergaron and the Society of the Magi. To make things even more difficult, he also had to ensure that the true extent of his own Innate Skills remained hidden, for if the prying eyes of the world fell on him and his many secrets came to light, then he would never again know a day of peace. Can one reborn man manage to keep his secrets and still succeed in doing what his conscience compels him to? Will he have to choose one over the other? And can he do any of it without reigniting the sparks of a planetary war the likes of which had not been seen in millennia? Follow Tercius’ story and find out! *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** This story is a continuation of Again from Scratch, a story of mine also posted on RR. Leslie's Poems
This is a continuous collection of poems that I've written in chronological order, starting with the oldest and ending with the newest. This will be updated periodically and may have mass updates. More often than not, each poem either will be written in free verse or with zero adherence to traditional poem structure. Some poems may imply situations and actions that can be triggering or annoying, especially the earlier poems. I recommend skipping most of the ones from 2018-2019, or just not reading this at all if you feel it may hurt you. Please enjoy and read at your own discretion.

First Iteration
What is a soul ? Is it your true self ? Would you be the same if your soul kept traveling from life to life but your memories faded for each new life you had ? Your education would be different each time, your growing environment would be different, your personality might change. So what is the purpose of the soul ? Mortals never got an answer for this question. Finding an exact definition didn’t matter for them, what they knew was that a soul allowed reincarnation. Even if they lost some memories, getting glimpses of their past lives was more than enough. Getting the possibility of a new life, a better life was what they thrived for. This became an even greater truth as progenitors, the first of their cycle, became scarce. As hundreds of new progenitors were born each century, nowadays, no more than a handful of them appeared every 200 hundreds years. As they represent a new cycle, they embody new opportunities: some progenitors have made kingdoms, others have been their doom. So when four of them appeared at the same place, at the same time, how can it not be perceived as a sign ? A sign that things were about to change…
