《Joie de Vivre》First Author’s Note

This was the first significant fanfiction (or fiction in general) that I wrote. As such, it’s, well, bad (at least in my opinion – not enough dialogue, too melodramatic, a bit unbalanced, etc). Somehow, when I took it down that still generated a number of PM’s and smaller number of reviews asking me to bring it back (and maybe even continue it), the most recent of which almost three years after I stopped updating the story. So I guess people don’t mind bad writing, every now and then; the story may as well return.
Chapters are being lightly edited (I had a lot of tense issues early on), and will be posted as that is completed.
There’s currently about a hundred thousand words (~360 RRL pages) already written. I’m not sure if I’ll continue it at all, let alone in the near future. I have five original projects which are, IMHO, better written and more interesting, and which I could eventually get some money for (as I am a broke-ass grad student, that matters). I also have more recent fanfics that are currently languishing in hiatus. But if by the time I’ve posted everything there’s enough interest, I may add this to the pile of things to update over time.
All that said, please, please do not judge my writing by this. Unless you really like it, in which case fine, do, but recognize my other writing is likely better (unless it’s that one MTG/ASoIaF/SW fic I did as a speed-writing experiment, which is also pretty terrible).
Original AN: I was in a CYOA character generation mood, when I saw a “ROB gives you three random powers” thread. The coolest set that I rolled, or at least the one that spawned the most plot threads in my head, started with Resurrection-Roulette. I was taken by the idea, and immediately had an idea that, after a while and some iterations, became this. I wanted there to be some reason beyond “because ROB, that's why,” so I made my character my interpretation of the modern monk.

Some parts are based on personal experience; I did suffer a serious brain injury, and did have a fairly remarkable recovery. I do believe in technological immortality (you can laugh), practice martial arts, and live healthily, though am not that obsessive, am wary of any pain meds, and am widely read. Otherwise, the character, his motivations, etc., are all his, not mine, other than to the extent that any character is the author's creation; I've purposefully tried to incorporate character traits of at least three friends and family members, and partially inspired by two fictional characters.
Generally, the character is based on a “how badass could someone who hasn't done ridiculously crazy shit be? Or, how does someone with the potential, in another setting, with a lot of luck, to be a badass act and develop as a modern, productive member of society? And then how would they deal with the Naruto-verse?”
As a final note, the story is told as a history from the protagonist's point of view. He's not a reliable narrator, and will often skip details he doesn't find relevant, or that he finds to be so basic that they are assumed, often forgetting that others won't. This is (to an extent, at least!) purposeful.
As a final final note, there will eventually be sex and possibly lemons, as well as graphic violence; this will happen though when the character is more mature.

RE: Choice
Misaka is a shy misunderstood 16-year-old boy in his first year of high school in Japan. His parents wanted him to be a girl, so they gave him a girl's name. He grew up being bullied and ostracized by his peers. In junior high, he developed a crush on a girl in another school who greeted him with a smile. Later, he found out the girl's name was Lucy and applied to the high school she was going to. One year later, he musters up the courage to confess his feelings for her only to find out that she was the wrong girl all along. Suddenly, a piano falls on top of him and he dies.He finds himself in front of one that calls himself God. He takes pity on Misaka and bestows him with the name Durrendal. He gives him another chance at life in another world and lets him pick a power of his choosing to take into the world. Story is going to be heavy reader interactive. Expect short frequent chapters. One chapter every few days. Two per week minimum. If I feel like it, more than that.Your choices WILL influence the story. It determines whether you get a game over (may discover new information), go around in circles never advancing the story, or advancing the story. Consequences of certain actions will shift Durrendal toward evil or good. The default personality of Durrendal may be ""pervy"" but depending on the actions that he takes it can be reversed. Think of the character as a game character. You are playing a game. It does not require that you make an account to vote. So screw around or advance the story? It's up to you.

Remorse
I have killed many people over my long life. Men, women, children. None have escaped the shadows that I control. It was only one tiny mistake that I made that changed my life forever. I underestimated her, and I would pay for my hubris. “For every death you have given, you will feel their pain.” What? “For every person you have killed, you will feel regret.” Wait, wait… “For every murder you have commited, you will know what you have done.” I don’t think this is going to be pretty. The power leaves her voice as she continues in a softer tone. “I will give you back what you have lost, you will feel empathy again.” Her power releases me and I fall to the ground. Diana. That was her name. I will remember it. ******** This story starts out somewhat dark, but it will lighten up after the first chapter. I tend to not enjoy the psychological tag too much since stories with the tag tend to be a little insane for my liking, but I feel that I would be remiss not putting it on this story, since a lot of it is about the psychology of the main character. All the content warnings are checked since I want to leave my options open to me for the future. I hope you enjoy.
