《Orc Lord》45. Departing for an Investigation
Advertisement
This is the first time I've ever done something like this.
The last time I went on an extended trip outside of the village, Durghan was leading the way, and there wasn't any ambiguity. The mission this time isn't something simple like “kill a Magic Beast,” either.
There’s three reasons I came personally to oversee the investigation. First is because I'm very curious. Second is that I want to see the situation myself in order to make a good decision on our next move. Third is, if this has anything to do with Fomors, War Orcs, or Demonic Beasts, my strength might be necessary just to get out alive.
It will take a day and a half just to get to where we’re going. Obviously, we’ll have to hunt for food along the way, since there wasn't any extra in the village to take with us. As far as camping supplies goes, we’re only bringing a pelt for each of us to sleep on and some firewood. For the firewood, we’ll have to replenish our supply as we go. We won't need it for every meal, because Orcs have strong stomachs that can handle raw meat, but there are some animals in the forest which can't be eaten unless they’re cooked. Snakes would be a good example.
In my old world, I heard that the poison in snakes is actually safe to ingest. It kills you if it gets in your bloodstream, but because the snake has to eat the poisoned prey, there’s no problem if you just swallow it. In this world, that’s fine for normal snakes, but Magic Beast snakes usually have , so their poison is not safe to eat normally, and it has to be removed via the cooking process.
We walked for a few hours without any problems. I've seen a few War Monkey tracks, but they’re mostly old ones that have already gone much farther Northwest. Besides the War Monkeys, the concentration of Magic Beast traffic here seems unusually low. I can't help but wonder if the thing with the War Monkeys scared them off.

I haven't found any substitute for a clock yet in this world, but I've gotten used to judging the time of day using other factors after living here for more than eighty days. It seems close to about two o’clock now. I guess it's time we start to look for prey as we go.
Fiara and I have made the boys carry the luggage, but we also take turns carrying it when it's their turn to hunt something. My heart is pounding a little. I feel like I'm on a school field trip, or an adventure… Ah. This actually is an adventure, isn't it?
Sometimes I forget that being the chief of an Orc village, adventuring in the forest to kill Magic Beasts, chatting with spirits, and practicing magic shouldn't be normal for me. I still have the super-adaptable mind of a human after all. I'm already used to it.
Hm? Fiara looks a little strange. Is her body feeling okay? I don't know if one is usually supposed to take it easy right after evolving or whatever.
“Fiara, you're making a face. Are you feeling alright?”
“Chief… Um, I'm not sure. I feel uncomfortable inside. It feels like something is slowly turning over again and again, and it's mildly irritating.” She put a hand over her abdomen and frowned as she tried to explain her symptoms.
“What? Aren't you just hungry?” I answered immediately without thinking.
“Eh? No… Hunger is more like a stabbing feeling, you know? This doesn't hurt at all, but it’s disconcerting.”
Oh yeah. Orcs don't feel hunger, they just feel pain in their stomachs. I had forgotten because I have which negates the effects of the Orc’s hunger curse. But what Fiara is describing definitely sounds like the kind of hunger a Human experiences.

Come to think of it, wasn't the drive to eat supposed to be less important for certain evolutions of Orc? Maybe the hunger curse is removed so they can focus on what they really want to do.
“...Chief?”
“Ah, sorry. I got lost in thought.” I shook my head and returned to the situation. “Fiara, what you're feeling is hunger. Orcs usually don't feel hungry, it just hurts when our stomachs are empty. Other species have a separate sensation for hunger. It's enough to let you know you need to eat, but it doesn't become an all-consuming need. It's probably because you evolved that you no longer experience hunger the way an Orc does, but more like how a Human experiences it.”
“This is… hunger?” She looks amazed and stares down at her stomach.
“Um… just in case, don't skip too many meals to do research. Just because it doesn't hurt anymore, doesn't mean you don't still need to eat.”
“Ah, no. I'll be careful. I feel like I've understood more about where Orcs fit in the world, and how other races see us…”
Hm? She’s not having an existential crisis, right? She looks fine… Well, whatever. The guys are just looking confused. Of course, they don't have any idea what we’re talking about.
I see Dodoran there with the guys, and I remember that Fiara “reserved” him before the mating ceremony. I bet he was happy not to have to participate with so many… eligible candidates. I wonder how he feels now that Fiara has evolved?
When it’s Fiara’s turn to hunt something, and she wanders away a bit, I decide to chat with him about it.
“So I understand you're saving yourself for our genius Magic caster,” I teased him slightly.
“Uh… yes, chief.”
“How do you feel now that your mate has become a Wisdom Orc?”
“Um…”
“... Hm?
“No, just… why are you asking me?”
“Huh?”
Come on. I'm trying to gossip here. This guy keeps pouring cold water on the conversation.
“That’s… because I'm curious. I want to know what you think about her. You accepted her advance. Doesn't that mean you think of her in some positive light?”
“Well, she didn't want to do anything this year. I said yes, and now I'm safe for a whole year.”
… I knew it was bad, but the lack of sexual desire in male Orcs is just dumbfounding. Do the Expansionist tribes really rape human women? … Wait, they did say it was the males doing the raping… right? Right?!
I'm just not going to think about it. Either way is definitely bad.
However, since not knowing was leading to me coming up with various terrible scenarios in my head, I checked with Fiara during dinner.
“Of course it’s the men who do it. If the women did it, their population still wouldn't grow back fast enough. Not to mention all the children would just be half Orcs.”
… What?

The Forbidden Class
Hatred. Lust. Power. There are many reasons why the Forbidden Classes are chosen. For Katai, a young village Guard, the reason was simple. Vengeance. Schedule I’ve not been able to write for quite some time now, so while I’m getting back into things the schedule will be nonexistent. Story details LitRPG - expect classes and skills and magic. Not a lot of stats/number-crunching though. There is slavery featured in this story, which a lot of people have been upset about. So here’s your fair warning. Skill levels and progression inspired by Azarinth Healer. Let me know what you think, and feel free to give me some constructive criticism. Please be nice about it though!

The Foretold: Sun Child (Complete)
As a sixteen year old commoner, your future is bleak. Worse, your appearance sets you apart from others. Your only achievement so far, is befriending the second son of the Lord of the Keep. He has been your only friend for eleven years, initially partner in mischief and later your hunting companion and confidant. Now your friendship is being torn asunder, he has turned eighteen and is being sent away to become a Judge Knight Aspirant. What is to become of you? Before your friend leaves, there is murder and conspiracy! Magic left the land hundreds of years ago, all you have is your bow and hunting skills, nevertheless you must fight to survive and save another to have any hope of a future! Note: The graphic isn't mine; it is a re-imagining of a few separate images, any objections by original artists let me know. N.B. If you are looking for Sexual Content every chapter, or every second, third or fourth chapter this isn't the story for you - the Sexual Content is required for a plot device, not a way of life and the later chapters reflect that - please stop dropping Low Ratings when you feel I haven't met your idea of "fan service". This is finished as much as a multi book vision can be finished. At 750,000 words give or take and very little readership I can only blame myself. I have learnt a lot, possibly forgotten a lot as well! I will probably return to the Chapters at some point - a touch up here and a touch up there. The second book though will probably remain in my head for a very long time, so yes "cliffs" although I hope the characters and their motivations are developed enough that you can have a good guess at the content of Book Two and tell me so I can confirm or deny! This isn't a LITRPG where classes are developed, great foes are defeated by a hero of immense power. This is a story based within (I hope) a very real and consistent culture, that leaves breadcrumbs for the reader to work out what the heck is happening and why. This is a slow burn story as the MC is stumbling around discovering her new place and role. Author's Note (Apr 2021): I dropped the Fantasy Genre for the Mystery Genre, because while the setting mentions magic, is it about past glories and trying to return to them. Whereas the MC from Chapter One doesn't understand her predicament and the range of mysteries she must solve to survive. If I have this wrong PM me and I will change this back.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
