《Foreststorm》Chapter 15 - Summer

Summer started three weeks later. The air heated up to almost unbearable temperatures and the suns split in the sky for the first time in her life. They now lived in a constant day, with either the yellow or the blue sun shining down on them.
They slept when the blue sun was up, the yellow one being way cooler with less harsh light. Ves'ra and her band were able to work longer than anybody else, all thanks to her magic. Still, they barely managed to spent half the time hunting as before. Summer only had one good thing, she had much more time for the chieftain to teach her the human language.
The three mothers gave birth to the next hatching of eggs a few days after summer started, which were then stored in the same hut she was born in, they removed the roof of the hatching chamber though - the heat of summer was good for that at least. The eggs would need another three months to hatch, just as she did. She could hardly believe it - she was already eleven months old!
She and her siblings were winter’s children - the adults told them that there was only winter in years dominated by the blue sun while the years of the yellow sun were mild, without winter. She was quite lucky in that regard - she really didn't want to do that in a year with winter.
---
Summer was nearly over, the heat was already lessening and the suns were less dominating. They even had several thousand breaths of darkness yesterday! They were on their way home when Ves’ra heard a familiar cry from above the treeline. That was a wyvern! She really ought to have checked the nest for eggs.
No crying over spilt milk - she would take care of it tomorrow, she was sure the chieftain wouldn't mind a last service to the village. Her band didn't seem affected by the cry - or recognize it - and she saw no reason to worry them.

Their return was uninterrupted - they didn't enter any clearing so they had nothing to worry about.
Once they arrived she immediately excused herself and went to visit the chieftain.
“Back already?” She was asked.
“Yes, I heard something on my way back. There was a wyvern about, I'm going to kill it.”
“Do you think you can manage?”
“Yes, I watched the humans and I am sure I’ll manage.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I think it’s time. I’ll do it after I leave.”
“You’ve made up your mind then? It’s a good idea to do that now. Tell me where to find the nest, should you fail. We’ll need to take care if you don't.”
“Sure.”
“When will you go?”
“I think I’ll wait for the new hatchlings and set out after.”
“Any specific reason for that?”
“I'm not sure how, but I know it won't be able to fly if the air is hot enough, so I’ll take its biggest advantage if I move now.”
“That's a good idea. We better ramp up your lessons then huh?”
“That would be best, I do plan to search for humans first.”
“Well, you are capable of communicating with them, you’ll mostly need practice and that's something even I lack.”
---
The hatchlings needed another week to hatch. They already had relatively normal nights - only a little shorter and warmer than normal. She was feeling completely at ease, all thanks to her magic. They were currently feeding the new hatchling - not the first to be born since another band watched over the chamber at the time - when her thoughts were interrupted.
“What are you brooding about?”
“You know what I am?” She asked.

“You are a shaman.” Kes’ra answered, not getting her implied meaning. “oh.”
“Yeah, I think it’s time.”
“Are you sure you are ready?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
“I’ll miss you.”
“Same here, but a tribe can’t allow internal conflict. And there can only ever be one chieftain and shaman - both positions I don't care about.”
“We would have helped you.”
“I know.”
“You don't want to kill shaman or chieftain don't you?”
“Yes.”
“You could’ve though?”
“Yes.”
“Come see us again sometime.”
“If I can manage.”
“You'll go tomorrow then?”
She nodded.

Epoch: An NPC's Tale
Epoch is a slow-burn LitRPG/Gamelit novel that tells the story of Luke, later named Lucius—a natural inhabitant of the game-like realm of Elyssia where thousands upon thousands of detached, virtually unkillable entities known as the Players were suddenly introduced right after the dusk of the magnificent Age of Heroes. Shortly after the Players arrived, the balance of power in Elyssia instantly shifted. Kingdoms fell, wars were waged, alliances between races were made, and Lucius, after ten years of training in captivity, found himself being used as a pawn in a prophecy that he had no intention to fulfill. With aspirations and desires of his own, Lucius must find a way to cautiously adapt to the drastic changes in the very foundations of the realm after being sent 300 years into a future that was forever altered by the outcome of the war that his captors had lost and the Players won in a victory that resounded throughout the ages, all for a terrible price. Author's Note As an avid fan of the LitRPG genre myself, I wrote this novel with character progression, heavy Gamelit elements, and some degree of world-building in mind. If you like these, please feel free to give this novel a try. Oh, and the MC is also an NPC, in a sense. And wait, isn't this also an isekai story? Well, it's all a bit complicated to explain here. Maybe you should start reading now?
