《Foreststorm》Chapter 28 - Adventurer

Ves'ra happily left the merchant's guild a few minutes later. Her walking pace slowed significantly now that she had something humans wanted and she could do more then enjoy the sight.
She was hungry so she decided to buy some of the burnt meat humans liked so much, it did taste better than normal, though she still preferred fresh meat.
She decided to take care of lodgings first - while she didn't mind sleeping under the sky she preferred sleeping inside.
She didn't need long to find something called an inn - one of the bigger houses that was specialized in housing people. She paid fifty silver for the week - one meal a day included. With a place to sleep secured Ves'ra set out towards the main square once again, she wanted to join the adventurer's guild.
The guild was easy to find - the building was even bigger than the merchant’s guild, though there was a bigger one still. The sign of the adventurer's guild was a goblin full of arrows.
She entered the building and arrived in a entrance hall just like in the merchant’s guild. Instead of waiting she immediately approached one of the counters - there were more than enough. Luckily there even was a counter for smaller people like her - it was manned by a strange human, about as tall as she was with an impressive beard and a very stocky build.
“What can I do for ya?” He asked.
“I want to join the guild?”
“You sure you're old enough?”
“I'm an adult.”
“Reason of ‘oining?” He asked.
“I'll get paid for hunting monsters. And information on how to do it.”
“Out for revenge than? That's a normal enough reason - who did you lose?”
“No! Monsters just taste better than the burnt meat you humans like to eat.”

“Your reason is your own, but I aint no human lass, I'm a dwarf.”
“Sorry for that mr. dwarf. What do I have to do?”
“Wait just a moment, I'll be right back.” The dwarf turned around and left through a door and came back with another box reeking of magic a few moments later.
“I'll have to ask you a few questions to determine your rank.”
“That's fine with me.”
“Ever killed a monster?”
“Yep.”
“What's the most powerful monster you killed?”
“Wyvern.”
“Ye have a way to prove that? Wyverns are mighty dangerous even for humans.”
“Its child is my familiar. That's confirmed on my identity card.” She said, taking out said card once again.
“So ye're already awakened then? That's impressive for one so ‘oung. How long have you been awakened?”
“A little more than a year.”
“Ye've awakened within three months ofyour birth - that's bloody impressive. I see ye're a storm mage, that means ye're a backline fighter then?”
“Now if ye'll confirm ye're the one on that card we can proceed.”
“Sure.”
“Good. Now what do you want to do?”
“Huh I already said that, an adventurer.”
“Not what I meant, do you wonna join a team or go solo hunting? There's a different ranking for that.”
“Solo hunting, there isn't even a question.”
“Ye sure about that? Teams are safer.”
“Why even ask if you're insisting on a team? Yes I'm sure.”
“Figured you would. It’s guild policy, I have to ask ye. Nothing personal. What do you know of the guild?”
“You hunt monsters for money.”
“That's a very basic description, though partly true. A few centuries ago both the adventurers guild and the mercenary guild were one. It’s true that adventurers usually go out to hunt monsters, but we can do everything a mercenary does too. The main difference is the size of each groups - adventurers won't run around in groups larger than eight, that's just not economical for most missions, while you’ll be hard pressed to find a group of mercenaries with less than fifteen members.

Because of that the two guilds split apart - each with their own speciality. Adventurers take small time work that doesn't require many people - like hunting monsters - while mercenaries work in bigger groups, mostly protection of caravans or bolstering armies in a war.
Due to our origins each mission has a difficulty ranking that scales with group size which is determined by the guild. Additionally the client can demand a mission to be taken by someone with a set amount of experience.
Experience ranking is from copper to mythril while combat ranking is from F to SSS. Everyone that joins the guild can have any combat ranking - with proof of their ability - but starts with a copper plate.
Of course the more difficult a mission the faster your experience will grow.”
“So how difficult is a wyvern?”
“Wyverns count as a B rank threat, mostly because of the venom and flight.”
“So I’ll be a copper-B rank than?”
“Yep.”
“So who pays for hunting monsters?”
“Mostly craftsman that want to use exotic materials, of course the more powerful a monster the better. There are other reasons too - sometimes the city pays to suppress certain monsters that tend to gather in groups big enough to threaten villages or all monsters of the dire class - basically everything who’s main prey are sapient beings like you and me.”
“Ohhh, I met one of those too.”
“Can't help you without proof there. Good job anyways - those are nasty buggers.”
After inserting her card into magic box the dwarf handed it back to her - now several new symbols had joined the previous ones while the card took a coppery hue.
“That's it, do you want to look for a quest right away or can I do anything for you?”
“No. Do you know where I can learn how to understand all those symbols you put on everything? I don't like not knowing what something means around me.”
“You should probably go to the mages guild, they teach everything - for the right price. Learning how to read and write shouldn't be all that hard though - a hundred fifty silver should be enough for a basic understanding. You can learn the rest by yourself by going into the grand library and practicing yourself.”
“Thanks, I’ll be on my way.”

The War Wolves
If you’re good at something, never do it for free. That’s what Ludgar’s uncle taught him. Sellswording isn’t the most glamorous life, but it pays well if you’re good at it. Interesting as well, if you ignore the very probable possibility of a swift, sticky end at the hands of pointy things. When the mercenary lifestyle grows incompatible with the Kingdom of Evandis, he and his merry band of misfits set off west to seek those with a better proclivity for warfare and with much deeper pockets. At his side: a wandering barbarian who teeters on the edge of savagery, a girl who would have a heart of gold if she didn’t pawn it off to the nearest fence, a wannabe knight who is absolutely overcompensating for something, and the last person in the universe who should be anywhere close to magic. But, as most mercenaries find, the right decisions are quite an expensive luxury, and the wrong ones happen to pay very well. Then again, what are the value of morals to a hungry wolf?
