A series of blue boxes sequenced as I accepted the proffered Class. I put all other notices to one side, though the xp was welcome, I really needed base Skills and Stats. A sudden thought struck me. While I was making great progress, unlocking Skills and getting a better understanding of the System, I had actually done next to nothing. I remembered the oblique warning the Atelophobia Award had given me.
There was a real danger I got so caught up in myself and perfecting my build that I would miss what it was all about. I needed to be getting out there and doing life, whatever this new life was. I needed to find my family, my little sister, Mum and Dad, and make sure they were all alright. I needed to get stronger and be strong and I needed it yesterday.
It was time.
Nige opened up my expanded Character Sheet.

My expanded Character Sheet was filling out nicely. I was particularly taken with my Stamina points and, I’m guessing SPI is Spirit. While not as high it also had an asterisk appended to it. Focusing on it, a new subsidiary explanation box popped up in front of my Sheet.

Interesting. I wonder what my cap is. Seems somewhat strange that a System seemingly designed to unlock potential and actively foster growth would then place restrictive limits on the players. I stopped my ruminations to consider what I had just speculated. Heh, ruminations on ruminations. Firstly; that the System had a designer, or designers, and secondly; that I was a player. And I was treating this as a game. Was it a game? Was I just a game piece? A pawn? Moved about for some undisclosed beings’ amusement. How much agency did I have?
And there was that word again. Agency. The System mentioned this right at the start. A quest for agency. And the System never referred to me as a player. It was either volunteer or participant, not player. I was somehow sure this was not a game. No. This was the new reality. A deadly serious reality. Treating it as a game, to be gamed, would be a mistake.
So why the Stats cap? It seemed to run counter to everything I knew about these types of setups. And perhaps that was it. People would treat this as a game and undoubtedly go down that familiar trope of min-maxing their Stats. While the strategy may have made sense in a game, I could see it being disastrous when your life was on the line.
I brought up two fresh notifications.
Well, I could take that as the System corroborating my musings I guess. Nothing like positive reinforcement to spur on desired behaviours. Ahhh, except the threat of punitive and lethal consequences. Yep that worked too. I was quite motivated by both those incentives I discovered.
“So Nige,” I would confirm this with him anyway, “Stat caps.”
Finding out humans weren’t any different in this respect was somehow simultaneously both disappointing and comforting. “So I’m guessing my Character Sheet is not typical looking?”

Nige paused. he agreed with himself.
Before I could enquire as to what he thought the most important Stat was, he moved on.
I had another look at my individual levels. This was sobering information. So if I was understanding him correctly, the normal minimum entry level of each Stat was five, the cap was eight, and most other people achieved at least a six or seven while I had just a three. “Hmmmm… do many players, I mean participants, achieve eight in every Stat?”
I had heaps more questions around cap levels and bonus points but I really needed to get moving. I had Skills to gain and grind before I accepted the Award, I needed to open a bank account and get access to the System Shop and most importantly, I needed to find my family. After that I could concentrate on getting stronger. Family first.
“Hey Nige, I need to link up with my family. How do you suggest I do that?”
Nige wobbled.
“Nige?”
“This isn’t going to be a problem is it? It’s what the System recommended right at the start. Nige?”
I was getting concerned. Nige was normally prompt in answering questions, often volunteering information beyond what I specifically asked.
Yes, exactly, this was interesting info but I failed to see how it related to my pretty straightforward query. The System had told me that family groupings would not be separated and recommended that we should link up upon entering the first trial.
Nige could obviously see I wasn’t making a mental link here.
I still wasn’t making the connection. Even if we had been separated by the first and last tranches, that was only around four months. Still shouldn’t be too hard to track them down. Mind you, 150 million is a lot of people all displaced and jumbled up to… Nige interrupted me.
It took me a few seconds to process this.
“So if they were caught up in the previous tranche, they will have been in the trial for 10 years already?”
Okay. So that might make things a bit harder to link up. They would have moved on from the starter zone and… Nige butted in on my musings again.
Oh good so why did you-
Say what? That means 500 to 600 years in the Trial. No, that can’t be right. That would mean they are all dead. I would never see them again. I was alone. My brain glitched, I spluttered in disbelief.
“This, this is unforgivable!”

Living In The System - A LitRPG with more story, less text boxes
In the ancient echoes upon it’s great boughs, Yggdrasil holds all the knowledge in existence. Indeed, all of creation swings from its immense branches and leaves. The howls that creep through its cavernous spaces were not caused by the wind. No wind could be powerful enough to shake The Tree, yet it rocked. A great battle raged in its dew drops and amongst its roots. A War for control. For knowledge is power, and power is everything. A furtive glance over her shoulder told the hurried goddess that she was not being followed. That was good. What she had just done would be a great risk. Placing a new thread on a world so soon to be destroyed was costly. She would be greatly diminished, but her work was not done yet. In the myriad of infinite worlds, there lies Genia. A starter world, of very little importance. It is where she will find her champion. Killian never got the chance to see the world. Yet he is given opportunity. Opportunity not just to see the world, but to change it... to change all of creation. There are many stories to tell upon the Tree of Yggdrasil, where all of creation hangs from its branches. The power of destiny fuels all, but destiny is fickle. He can only pray that things will go well. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

The Love Hero Chronicles
Lets keep this simple shall we? Single witty and sarcastic man is now trapped in an alternate Earth based off a cringy eroge game. Worse yet he's stuck there as a supporting character with a horrendous backstory. Seeking way home or at least trying not to bite the dust as many non-protagonist male characters do. Will his real world thinking connect well to the tropey and cliché world of a harem game? Probably not.

A Titan's Crusade
Erik Thayne spent most of his life being brutally ridiculed and tormented for his weight and physical appearance, among other things. A social pariah and diagnosed with an eating disorder no one has an explanation or treatment for, Erik spent years trying to overcome his issues with his personal image and escape the ridicule and vicious torment of his peers. After years of dedicated effort, and a fresh start in a town away from his childhood and adolescent tormentors, he had finally begun to truly realize what he'd been striving for all along. Only, fate apparently has other plans because in the blink of an eye, Erik found himself snatched from Earth and taken to another universe, another world, where he is offered the chance to be more than he'd ever imagined. Now, he has to fight to restore the Balance between Chaos and Order on a world of swords and magic, in a universe governed by the System's laws, which resemble those of RPGs from Earth. Erik learned to embrace the things about himself that others taught him to hate, using them to reforge his physical identity into something more removed from his old self-loathing. But can he learn to embrace the darkest parts of his mind just as he did the reviled aspects of his body and become who he needs to be to succeed in the task set before him? It might just prove easier to stalk in the dark as a monster than to walk in the light as a man... *This is my first time publishing anything I've written to a public audience. Due to formatting issues, I forwent traditional stat-screens for something a little less problematic, delineating stat screens by separating them from regular text with horizontal lines in a lighter-grey coloration. Let me know if you like them or not. Criticism is entirely welcome, but please don't hate on my work after only reading 1 chapter. This is a writing project I intend to complete but I have committment problems so we'll see how long this goes on. Also, fair warning, as the description implies, the main protagonist is intended to be someone who has been treated cruelly, developed antisocial tendencies, and ultimately has to question his own humanity--or lack thereof. This story is not intended to be brutally dark but I will definitely be trying to follow a darker theme. It is intended to be violent and some scenes later in the story might be...alarming. There will likely also be some light, non-graphic (think more implied with crude jokes and conversation than actual details, there will be no full-blown sex scenes)relationship scenes planned later and if you're opposed to either a bisexual or gay main character, stay away. I haven't yet decided which way he's going to swing but the odds on him being straight are relatively miniscule, and I've always wanted to write a story about a gay man who basically looks like a lumberjack because who doesn't like giving conventional stereo-types the middle finger? This will NOT be a harem story, and I have no intention to focus on romance over action--it's a consequence of character development where I'm concerned, not the be-all-end-all of the story. The cover-art does not, in any way, belong to me. It was an image titled the Druid King (by duskanmarkovic according to the file name) which I found on Google Images. Until I can get something commissioned, this is the best stand-in image I could find.
