《Spartan》Chapter 9: Magic

Hope y'all enjoy this new chapter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The motley class of heroes were all currently seated in a large room that reminded them a bit of a huge classroom, the reason they were seated in this room was because they were going to be taught the basics of magic in this world.
When the class heard the door to the room open all chatter ceased simultaneously, they watched as a beautiful young woman entered the room, she had shoulder length blue hair and a body that would make any man drool. She was wearing deep blue robes that complemented her beauty nicely, Thor watched her walk into the room and reach the small podium that was in front of the students.
She met Thor's eyes and her checks tinged red, then she quickly shook her head and addressed the class.
Young Woman: "Okay class, I'm the arch mage of Rosenhime's assistant. My name is Sapphire Goldknife, you may all call me Sapphire.
'She can't be a day over 18 by the looks of it, she must have worked hard to get such a position at such a young age.' Thor wondered while looking at Sapphire.
Sapphire: "Okay, I'm just going to get straight down into business. There are four basic elements, fire, water, earth and wind. There are also other variant element magics such as light, death, shadow, ice and the rarest form, lightning. There are many other types of variant element magics but you can all view them in our library in your own time."
Sapphire: "Mana, all life on our world needs mana to survive. From the plants to the animals, every living entity has at least a tiny morsel of mana. Now, everyone has a set mana pool in their bodies, nothing can change the size of that pool. Your wisdom stat on your statuses represent how efficiently you can utilise that mana."
Sapphire: "Mana has also caused many creatures to become deformed and blood thirsty, these creatures are what we call monsters. The strength of a monster does not depend on its mana pool, in fact no-one knows exactly what makes a monster stronger than another monster, but we think it has something to do with spiritual energy endowed by the gods."
Sapphire: "Speaking of spiritual energy, your abilities that were given to you by the gods do not use mana, this is because they are actually apart of you. Or rather apart of your spirit, so all you have to do is materialise them from your soul."

Sapphire: "Okay, I would like all of your to form a line in-front of me." Sapphire pulled out a large glass ball that was about the size of her head and placed it on the podium.
Sapphire: "This magic tool was created by our kingdoms finest magical minds, it measures your magic affinities. The measurement it uses is a sort of ranking system, it goes in this order, F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS and SSS. If you receive an F for an affinity then that means that you cannot wield it. Be warned that you cannot ever change your magical affinity. There have only been 6 other humans in history to receive an SSS ranking for a magical affinity. So don't get too down if you don't receive one.
Thor watched Harry go first, Sapphire told him to place his hand on the crystal ball and wait. He did so and a few long seconds passed where nothing happened. Then the crystal ball glowed and projected something into the air.
Fire: S
Water: S
Wind: S
Earth: S
Light: SS
Sapphire: "Holy shit! You've got an S rank in all the basic elements and an SS rank in the rare light variant! This is incredible, the only other human who ever came close got three S rank elements!"
Harry blushed at this praise and squirmed around a little, "it was nothing much..." He said as if he was begging for more praises. 'He's like a lost puppy' Thor thought.
Sapphire: "Well now I'm exited to see what the rest of you will get! Next please."
Jake walked up to the crystal ball and lightly placed his hand over it.
Wind: SS
Shadow: SS
Fire: E
Earth: F
Water: C
Jake: "Cool, I wanted shadow."
At this point Sapphire just decided to push down her surprise and awe to call up the next person, which was Akane.
Wind: SS
Earth: SS
Fire: F
Water : B
Mia was the next person to have her affinities checked.
Fire: S
Water: S
Earth: S
Wind: S
Then Lucas.
Earth: SS
Water: C
Fire: E
Wind: D
Once everyone else had gone through their turns, it was finally Thor's turn, he walked over to the crystal ball and gently placed one hand over it.
Fire: SSS
Lightning: SSS
Water: F
Earth: F
Wind: F
The entire room went silent, so quiet that Thor could hear his own heart beat. Sapphire slowly opened her mouth like it needed a serious oil change.

Sapphire: "I-I-I c-can't believe it, y-you are the o-only one to receive a triple S ranking in not just one element, but two! Your geometrical magic capabilities must be at least of the seventh periodic level of...."
Sapphire continued to spout all kinds of magical sounding gibberish while the rest of the class just stared at Thor.
'Thor's so cool, and manly... Wait, no! Bad thoughts, get out of my head!' Akane started to blush while looking at Thor in amazement, then she started trying to cave in the side of her head with a fist.
Sapphire was looking at Thor with a compassionate gaze on her face, but whenever Thor looked back at her she would quickly look away.
'Strange, what's wrong with the teacher...?' Thor thought, puzzled as he looked at Sapphire.
Sapphire: "*Cough* let's move on for now, it's time to start learning how to control your magic. People with a higher affinity will not be able to control their elements any easier, it will just be more powerful so don't go off slacking."
Sapphire: "First I want you to imagine one of your elements in its rawest form, now try to imagine it forming on the palm of your hand as a small orb."
Thor followed her instructions and thought about his lightning element, which wasn't that hard with his past.
In several of the scientist's experiments on him they used electricity, one example of this was when they used him as a lightning rod to see if the lighting would interfere with his Hyperion nerve system, luckily it did not, but the scientists continued to shock him with deadly amounts of lightning for god knows how long though.
Thor tried to imagine the electricity gather on the palm of his hand, but nothing happened.
Thor kept trying this method until eventually everyone else had their chosen elements in the palm of their hands. So Thor decided he would try a different approach.
He closed his eyes and remembered what it felt like to have electricity running through his veins, and as he did so he felt a slight tugging motion in his body, like he was trying to pull something to him with an extra limb he didn't know he had.
So he yanked whatever the hell it was inside of him, then he felt something strange and alien flow throughout his body, but somehow warm and comforting. As if it came from his very core. Accompanying this new sensation was the sound of screaming and shouting, but it felt like he was hearing them from the other side of a thick wall.
Thor opened his eyes and saw everyone looking at him in shock, or at his body. Thor looked down and gasped, both his arms were covered in a thick layer or lighting, squirming around and jumping to and fro on his arms.
He slowly raised an arm, staring at the lightning in curiosity. He then moved his arm faster and faster, trying to see wether or not the lightning would stay. He kept going faster and faster in a circular motion until his hand was just a dark blue blur. Making his arms scream through the air at a speed he could never achieve before.
Then he stopped the motion immediately and abruptly, and when he did so a shockwave from his arms tore through the air, headed straight for the magically enhanced marble floor.
*BOOOOOOOOOM*
An earth shattering explosion resounded through the room, everything within a five foot radius of Thor was blasted away, which included 3 desks and an unfortunately placed Harry.
Fortunately Harry was cushioned by several other students, and the desks all narrowly missed the other unlucky students.
Akane: "This feels really nostalgic."
*Several hours later
Thor layer down on his luxury king sized bed, all the students and teachers had been given private rooms before hand, and thought about the existence of magic.
After his little accident, they were relocated to another room to continue practicing, with Thor being given a strong warning by his teacher. He found that it was incredible that he could encase his arms in lightning, it was apparently an extremely rare talent to cover yourself in your element. He and Jake were the only ones who were capable of it.
He could also cover his arms in fire, but when Thor tried both simultaneously he grew very tired and almost collapsed. Sapphire told him that this was because he didn't have enough control over his elements as of yet.
As Thor laid in bed he through the he'd try something new, he raised both his arms and coated one arm with lightning and the other with fire, and was greeted with a breathtaking sight.
The fire and lightning seemed to contrast each other perfectly, the Sparks and flames danced between each other as if it was to a violent and impulsive beat.
Thor: "It's.... beautiful."

Cybernetic Dragon
Idea Seven, or Inter Dimensional Explorer Automaton Unit-7, has had a bit of an accident. Hijacking the egg of a dragon rather than its intended target of a bird egg, it isn't fully in control of its host brain. Rather the two, dragon and cybernetic AI interface, must work together to survive in a hostile world of magic, dungeons, beasts and adventurers. The AI must deal with being a machine from a world of science trying to carry out its mission of exploration, while the dragon, Rex, must deal with being a cyborg living with symbiotic nanotech that sets him apart from other dragons. What adventures await them? Author Note: I tagged this story GameLit because it contains concepts like levels, classes, and dungeon/beast cores. But, it isn't tagged LitRPG because no one has status screens, other than occasionally Idea Seven who likes to organize data into blue boxes. It isn't a natural function of the world to display level ups or skill ups with an announcer voice. I mention this to set expectations, because otherwise I feel like LitRPG fans might be disappointed by my lack of LitRPG elements while others might be turned off thinking I have a lot of LitRPG elements. I think that if you approach the story with an open mind you will appreciate the gradual way in which the main character learns and expands his understanding of how the world works, but the game mechanics aren't meant to take center stage to the actual story.
