《Ouroboros Ascendant》Chapter 18: John 11:44

You have died.
Jack: I mean, no shit. Stupid screen.
Rory: If we can still talk, we’re only mostly dead.
Layla: And mostly dead is slightly alive.
Erin: What happened?
Jack: I *think* Ouroboros possessed you, then the two of you taunted the priest into nuking us.
Erin: WHAT!?
Layla: Oh yeah, it was epic. You melted that skinny crypt-keeper dude’s face right off. Turned him into a gribbly mummy.
Erin: The part about us getting NUKED, El.
Layla: Yeah, apparently the Empire has magic nukes. Robey-McSplodey-Pants said they had sixteen more. And lessee, a group of us created all the magitech that Alabastris uses. And one of them is still alive, in like, cryo-sleep, underneath the capitol. And there’s a shrine under there. Also, I am 100% super thrilled that Seiger Weiss was disintegrated by nuclear hellfire. We do think he’s dead, right? That guy was on another level, man.
Jack: So, what are we gonna do now? Is this the Ayrgard afterlife?

For a moment, the only sound they could hear were the harrowing screams of three humans and a succubus being reassembled, mote of mana by mote of mana. Then, the sounds carried in the crisp night air were shouted profanities and curses of all stripe, labored breathing, and the echoes of blood-curdling screams reverberating against the rocky terrain. Beneath them, the impossibly black material of the shrine was emblazoned with the sign of the serpent eating its own tail.
“That… that was unpleasant,” Layla fell to her knees, then laid down on the cold stone.
“It beat getting my leg nearly chewed off and you setting the hole on fire combined, by a good bit,” Jack slumped to his knees next to her.
Rory simply fell to his hands and knees, then thought better of trying to remain upright and slowly sank to meet the stone.
“Thank you, Ouroboros,” Erin whispered to the night sky, then clanged and clunked over onto her side, laying her head on Layla’s leg. “That was bad.”
“Yeah, that ‘bout covers it,” Rory grunted.
Jack rolled onto his rear and threw his helm onto the stone with a clatter, “We died. We were dead.”
“Yeah, guess this job does come with some perks,” Layla croaked into the black stone. “My fucking head hasn’t hurt this bad since before we got here.”
“We diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed, El,” Erin grumbled into her calf.
“I feel like I might still be dead,” Rory whined.
Layla laughed, then winced and exhaled a pained noise, “Does that mean we should go through your pockets for loose change?”
“You and the fucking Princess Bride quotes, I swear,” he replied.
“You,” she rolled slightly to the left, “unggh… started it.”
It took them another ten minutes to relearn how to sit and stand upright without falling over. Their money, gear, and most of their experience was intact, and they had been spared the unimaginable agony of Seiger Weiss’ tender affections.

“Issat… Isenmar?” Rory stood at the edge of the shrine’s tiny plateau, staring to the East.
“It’s just… fire… that has to be… gigantic,” Layla whistled.
“Look over there, that’s Alabastris, right? See how the lights move over the horizon?” Jack pointed.
“Maybe mate, but at this height, we’d have to be, what El, couple hundred miles? From Isenmar?” Rory ticked away on his fingers and drew in the air.
“I don’t know the formulae, Rory, but I remember a little from geometry. If Ayrgard is Earth-sized, which it seems to roughly be, because we were pretty much right the first time we did this, then yeah. At this height, seeing Alabastris over the horizon would mean we were at least a couple hundred miles away,” she mused.
“So, we’re safe?” Erin rubbed at her shoulder.
“No way. We need to get the fuck out of the White Empire’s territory. After that shit, nowhere is gonna be safe. Let’s just assume they can call up Weiss’ soul and play twenty questions with him,” Layla gestured wildly, throwing her hands into the air.
“Also, what the fuck is Ouroboros’ thing with these shrines being on top of mountains!? I hate hiking.”

Horizon
Emiluna is about to turn 16 and gain access to her first two classes. Living in a small village in the middle of nowhere, she always wanted to become a Hunter. Having learned a bit under her parents, a miller and a seamstress, she was sure she could never pick a class that meant staying inside all day. But being a Hunter is more than just a class. It means providing meat for the village, culling small pests near the cultivated fields and most importantly guarding the village from predators and monsters. But Emiluna is not a normal girl and her destiny far bigger than she could have ever imagined.Join her as she finds out what awaits just behind the horizon.[Word from the author]I am looking to create a fantasy world that has some logic to it and stays believable even as characters gain power and progress in levels.Classes and level quantify the people's progress, but they do not artificially inflate their power to demi-god levels. I am primarily trying to write a captivating story, not "power-porn". That means it will be slower than the fast burning litRPG you might be used to, but it won't burn out that quickly either and I won't drop half of my plots at the wayside. I should mention that English is not my native language. I hope it is mostly unnoticeable, but sometimes I manage to slip some awkard sentence structure in there (German sometimes puts things together in reverse). It it also my first time writing an actual fantasy novel and the first time writing anything at length in English. Any constructive feedback is very welcome.Credit where credit is due: Cover picture by Paul Bica (Licensed under CC 2.0)Check out his amazing photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dexxusYes, my cover picture is a photo, not a drawing. :D I might try my hand at some Paint-ification later to add the title.[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

You must be thinking how wonderful it would be to awaken Magic at some point in your life. You must believe it would be a blessing. You would be able to become famous and rich with the flick of your finger. It is no blessing, it is not wonderful. If you awaken magic you will probably spend most of your life trapped within a secret facility, getting your blood drained and bone marrow taken. Until you are too sick to be able to produce decent blood. Then you’ll be dissected and used for materials. The other option is to run. Run and keep running for the rest of your life, staying one step ahead from those trying to catch you. Forever wishing for a normal life. Roland’s tale isn’t a happy one. Sure there are good moments, good days, and sometimes even good months, but overall it is a terrible tale to tell. This tale is one about a man on the run. Yet it is also one about a man trying to overcome all odds, trying to find security, attempting to latch onto the sliver of hope visible before his very eyes. This is a tale with countless setbacks. People will die, cities fall, ideologies rise. Follow Roland on what would, at first, appear to be a journey to greatness.

Serendipity
What would you do for a wish? In the center of the world of Earthena lays the tower of Serendipity stretching high into the heavens where the goddess lays in deep slumber. It is said that whoever would climb the top and awaken the goddess would get any wish they desire granted. With a newfound power, young adventure Silica Hale and her Fairy partner Jil must venture to the tower and awaken the sleeping goddess. --------------------- Authors Notes: Inspired by more or less the game Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Serendipity is a large epic drawing a lot on the classic JRPG formula. An epic that will see the heroes travel the entire world of Earthena to reach their goal, with the intention of building upon a rich and dynamic world of mystery and war. NOTE: This is gonna be my first Draft of this story. Any feedback will be appreciated. Grammer hopefully won't be too much of an issue compared to Goddess Chosen given that this one is more recent, but... Just give you guys a heads up. This story is ongoing. Updates are slow as I publish when a chapter is ready. Expect my chapters to be on the long side, that's just my style. Only on Royal Road.com
