《Blackthorne》Rewrite Chapter 24.3: Welcome to the Family

Piercing blue eyes fiercely judged the competition laid out before them. Each competitor sought to win the day, but only one might be chosen.
"I think this one would look good on you," said Shara as she held up a strange bright white button-down top for Sonja to add to the current competition. It had a bright blue oversized color and came with a red neckerchief tied at the front.
"Oh and this skirt," said Shara as she showed her a bright blue skirt that would barely come to her mid-thigh.
"Truly?" asked Sonja as her gaze drifted from the pile of clothing on the bed to the offerings in Shara's hands. She noted the soft gleam in the girl's eyes, but saw no sign that she held ulterior motives.
"Yes, though that chainmail bikini that you are wearing is interesting," said Shara. "How come it doesn't chafe you, though?"
Sonja started to explain how armor worked once more then thought better of it. Was it not possible that armor worked differently in this world? Were she to explain the concept of armor, it might not be the way things worked in the world and thusly she would have lied to Scott's childhood friend.
"I'm not certain," she said after a moment.
The Valkyrie showed no shame when she removed her final article of clothing. The chainmail bikini was the closest thing to undergarments that she currently possessed. They did hold certain things in place to a certain extent, but the item was tailored toward bonus defense and not designed to uplift the masses, so to speak. It could not be helped. Her master was a relative newcomer in the armored fashion field.
Shara eyed Sonja thoughtfully for a moment then grinned mischievously. "We can't have you walking around like that... One moment."
Sonja blinked at her when she quickly scurried off to her closet then looked down at the glory of her naked body. "What is wrong with it?" she asked curiously. She swayed her body from side-to-side but saw nothing that should be hidden from view.
Not long after, Shara returned with new articles of clothing in hand. She offered them to Sonja and the blond girl took them dutifully. "What is the significance of this item?" she asked before she showed the cat-eared headband to Shara.
"Scott will love them," said Shara lightly.

A curious expression crossed Sonja's face for a moment then she looked down at the cat-ear headband in her hand. They matches the strange underwear granted to her. "I see. Master likes cats?"
"Yes. Let's accept that as the reason," agreed Shara lightly.
Sonja squinted at her, but said nothing. Instead, she donned her new apparel then straightened her clothing. "The time has come," she said decisively.
"Shall we away to your master's home, milady?" asked Shara in good humor.
"Yes," agreed Sonja with authority.
Back at stately Blackthorne Manor, Scott busied himself with the baking of a cake. He realized earlier that the cake ingredients were basically ready to be baked, but no one had actually bothered to use them. Rather than throw them away, he decided to finish the task. As things stood, he now held a bag of icing in hand and lightly decorated the cake in a bid to make it seem more festive. He managed to write, 'Welcome to Earth, Sonja," just before a heavy knock came from the door.
Icing bag in hand, Scott strolled over to the door. He opened it fully expecting to find Shara and Sonja on the other side. He was correct. They had returned. However, what he saw waiting for him was not quite what he expected.
"Uh..." began Scott.
Sonja looked him square in the eyes, as though to challenge him, then lifted her hands and curled them into fists. She bent her hands at the wrist to make cat paws then greeted him in a serious tone. "Please take care of me. Nya."
Scott made a choking noise and then his hand involuntarily squeezed the icing bag. Icing flew into the air then landed on the ground with an indecent splat.
Shara tittered inanely then lightly bumped Sonja with her shoulder. "See. I told you he'd like it."
"I see," said Sonja, her eyes still locked on Scott's rapidly reddening face.
Scott tossed the obviously defective bag of icing aside then coughed into his fist briefly. After the coughing fit passed he looked to Shara. "Why is Sonja dressed like a Japanese high school cat girl?"
"She looks cute in it?" asked Shara as both a question and as an answer to his question.
"Well, can't deny that..." said Scott while he did his best not to look at Sonja.

"Did I speak the ancient words of greeting correctly?" asked Sonja to Shara. She then stopped in her tracks, tilted her head to the side, and made her fists bob up and down slightly. "Nya?"
"You did it well," agreed Shara. "With practice, you may cause your master to become so excited that he will develop a nosebleed from the mere sight of you."
"Truly?" asked Sonja in a wondering tone. The light in her eyes began to sparkle slightly.
Scott drew back and threw up a hand to protect his sanity from such a wondrous image. Things were ridiculous enough without adding to the effect.
The girls entered the manor and Sonja spied the cake on the kitchen counter. She walked toward it, her cat tail swaying lightly as she walked.
"How is that thing moving?" asked Scott curiously.
Shara grinned at him. "When a girl has moves like that, what tail wouldn't sway?"
Scott groaned at her, and she laughed at his antics. Sonja, however, remained quiet. She gazed down at the partially completed welcome sign.
"Master, this message..." she asked him softly, her eyes downcast.
"Yeah... I mean, the cake mix was ready so I figured I'd bake it for you," he said lightly. "I mean you're the one who always cooks for me, so..."
Sonja bit her lower lip softly even as her cheeks reddened. A sweet laugh escaped her lips then she looked up at him, a warm smile on her lips. "You are so thoughtful..."
"Say that now, but you haven't tasted it..." said Scott with a soft self-deprecating laugh, "I mean, I was going to give it a fancy border but... the icing bag was defective..."
"Really? Your icing bag seemed to be working perfectly to me," remarked Shara.
Scott groaned at her again, and she laughed once more. Sonja, however, sighed softly and stared down at the cake a warm smile on her lips.
A moment of back and forth chattering dialog occurred where little was said, but all the while Scott's eyes drifted down toward Sonja's legs. She wore the typical knee socks one might expect from her attire, but she also wore a garter belt. Was she supposed to be a high school cat girl, or a live-action hentai parody of one?
He looked over to Shara and asked her a simple question, "You don't even have normal people clothes, do you?"
She grinned at him. "Normal clothes are boring."
He groaned softly once more. "Have to get her some real clothes, soon. If she walks around in public like that, it'll cause traffic accidents and impromptu dance fights."
"Dance fights?" asked Shara with a laugh.
"I don't know! Either way, her wearing that outfit would break the world and cause people to go crazy," said Scott lightly.
"Shopping?" asked Shara in a perky tone of voice.
"I'm a little low on cash at the moment. Have to do it soon, though," said Scott.
"I could buy her some stuff," offered Shara. "I'd love to do it, actually."
Scott considered her offer for a moment, but eventually shook his head. "No. I have to take responsibility," he said. "I owe her that much."
He went over to get Sonja a knife. She clearly wanted a piece of her cake.
"R-responsibility?" asked Shara, her eyes widening. Fingers rose to her lips as the light in her eyes began to dance. "Goodness."
"Wait, no... Let me do it," said Shara as she rushed forward. She took the knife from Sonja and said, "I'll cut it for you."
"I am capable of doing it," said Sonja in a mildly annoyed tone.
"Of course, but you shouldn't stress yourself out too much," said Shara. "Let big sister help you."
"Ah..." Sonja did not know what to say to that. Though, the idea of having a big sister again did feel nice. Even so, how would it be stressful to cut a cake? Perhaps it was harder than it looked? Scott did mention something about the taste earlier.
Shara took a finger full of icing then lightly licked it. A soft joyful giggle was soon followed by the words, "Yay. I get to be the cool big sister."
The cake was cut, and soon everyone had a piece. They laughed, carried on, and enjoyed the sweet taste of a passably good cake. However, at no time did it cross the mind of Scott or Sonja that Shara never asked why the cake had welcomed Sonja to Earth.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

Sanctuary
A girl searching for someone. A boy who lost his memories. A man from another world. A woman trying to prove her worth. Follow along as this unlikely group of people join forces to help each other accomplish their own goals in this non-epic fantasy adventure. Fair Warning: This fiction contains many of the well-known light novel tropes, though I try to give them my own spin. If you’re tired of them by now, you might want to keep away. There are no demon lords however, nor any end-of-the-world cataclysm situation that only the MC can solve. This story is more about different people coming together and helping each other out to achieve their own goals and objectives.

The Cosmic and the Fair
When magic comes crashing into the world, humans are swept away. When they come trickling back, they are changed. Many of them have been transformed into elves, dwarves, trolls... and now one succubus. Magic is wondrous, dangerous, and inextricably linked to all living things. But succubi have to take it from other people, and for a succubus dropped far away from any communities big enough to sustain her, that's a problem. Luckily for Persephone Evans, she's got help. She has a fancy unique class and a companion. But both gifts come with strings attached, and why did she have to teach the succubus on her shoulder what 'consent' means? This is my first story! Note: The prologue differs wildly in tone from the rest of the story. I'm playing it safe on the tags. I don't think the story really deserves the profanity or gore content warnings, but the main character does swear and get hurt. That said, the main character is a succubus. Sexual content is a given.
