Portals are rather strange.
Of course that strangeness comes from the fact that you are essentially stepping through a ‘fold’ in spacetime.
Normally that’s not an issue for a short range portal, however, longer portal distances have shown problems.
For something like a city to city portal you might just get a small feeling of easily dismissed vertigo.
For longer portals like Empire capital city to other Empire capital city, there can sometimes be severe reactions.
This portal I leaped into is so much worse.
I’m pretty sure, it’s not connecting to anything on my planet, probably not anything in the previous universe.
So, I think I should be forgiven for what happened when we exited.
Honestly, it’s not the first time I’ve burned down a forest, so really, it shouldn’t be unexpected.
Rustle.
I am not a pyromaniac!
Did you just take a separate trip or what? That portal gave me the bends!
Of course the first thing I would do when it spat us out was try to make a light!
How am I supposed to predict the combustability of another universes mana?
I.
Am.
NOT.
A GOD.
Powerful, yes!
Debonair, yes!
Young, yes!
Rustle.
No, you can’t slip that kind of word in there during my monologue, that’s vile!
Anyways, point is, I can’t foresee a goblin ambush much less the combustability of another universes mana.
Rustle?
An excellent question, to which my answer is stimply….Status check!
…
….
…..
And there you have it.
Different universe, different rules.
Hm…
Flash.
Crack.
BOOM!
Well, certain Laws are still in effect, although, there are severe differences in power output.
Also, what is with this rather annoying tide of insects rushing at us from underground?
Just because we burned the carnivorous forest by accident, doesn’t mean we should be attacked by unhappy bugs.
Squish.
Oh.
Oh my.
These things are tasty.
Crunch.
Very, very, very tasty.
That’s it, whatever this species of insect that appears to be a cross between a beetle and a praying mantis is on the menu.
I haven’t had such a delicious taste in a long while.
Yes, it tastes like…
Old Earth Chicken.

He has no idea or when or how he came to pass, and now finds himself being forced to start all over as a dungeon core. Worse yet, he isn't even your average run of the mill dungeon. No, the Overseers, whoever they are, have designated him to be an experimental core. This means he doesn't have to play by all the rules, the bad news is that if the core oversteps his boundaries as a dungeon core too far he's more than dead; he's erased. Now he has to struggle to figure out what kind of dungeon he wants to be, all the while very aware that he can't play it safe. The overseers don't want safe, they want lines redrawn and limits reset. The question is, can he do it and survive? He asks, because he overstepped before he even made it to his new world.

After the Long Burn
After the longest exodus in human history, a terrible accident threatens to turn the salvation of humanity into its most desperate struggle for survival. From the ashes of calamity rises a new human story. A frustrated scientist dedicates her life to recreating the Earth in alien soil, while another is gunned down for his sin and sets off a chain of events culminating in a desperate escape across the void for an opportunity at redemption. Around a distant moon a deep space miner stumbles onto a secret, the key to which lies buried inside his own tortured mind. After the Long Burn is an anthology of short science fiction stories set in the distant Ionad System. Author's Note: I thought I might try something a little different with this story. Rather than one story, it is six stories of varying length, each taking a slightly different perspective to tell a larger story. Some are more actioney, others more cerebral but I hope there will be something for everyone. Stories over 7000 words, with the exception of the titular After the Long Burn, will be published in two parts. I anticipate an upload schedule of one part every other day.
