《A Promise Made Long Ago》Chapter 2

Jay relished the heat blasting from the car vents. She dried off as best as she could with the towel while listening to the low music coming from the radio. Eventually her shivering stopped and she relaxed a bit.
She was still on guard and she grew nervous as she noticed they were traveling further into the country rather than heading into the city. Where was he taking her? Had she made the right decision?
She debated on jumping out of the moving car but didn't want to risk getting injured and being unable to get away. To make matters worse, she didn't have her knife on her. Their meeting flashed briefly through her mind again as she regretted not grabbing it.
He did clean up her mess and nothing had come of her deed so perhaps he could be trusted. Perhaps the paranoia from the eventful night was just making her jump to conclusions. She wasn't sure so she decided to stay on guard. She would rather be prepared than be blindsided by a surprise attack.
As time went by, she noticed that the houses they occasionally passed were starting to get nicer and bigger. Before she knew it, they entered a rich area of the countryside. Now the homes they passed were mansions. The storm seemed to lessen the further they went as well.
Her mind was racing with questions and a million more seemed to pop up when Jon slowed down and stopped at a gated driveway. He typed in a code and the gate slid open. She had suspected Jon had money but this was way beyond her guess.
He drove down the long driveway and pulled into an underground garage revealed by a platform rising from the end of the driveway. The platform was an elevator. Once in the garage, she saw several nice cars.
She shot Jon a shocked glance before looking around at the cars. They were clearly all well taken care of and the few older models looked brand new.
"Surprised?" Jon asked with a laugh.

"Very," she replied quietly. It took effort to get her voice out and she realized she was exhausted.
"I'll answer any questions you have in the morning. For now, you need rest. I'll take you to your room. Kyle should have it ready by now." He pulled into a spot and put the car in park before turning it off.
Fighting back a yawn, Jay got out of the car with him. She followed him over to an elevator. They went up a short ways and the doors slid open to reveal a hallway filled with old pottery displayed in cases. They lined both sides of the hallway, with plants in large oriental vases between them.
Chandeliers hung down along the hallway, lighting it up brightly. Jay felt so out of place immediately. She had run from a nice large home herself but it was nothing compared to the mansion as she was led through the large building.
They went up a flight of marble stairs and down another hallway. At the end on the right was her room. The room was done up with a black and dark purple theme.
"This was my daughter's room. You two are about the same height and size so her clothes should fit you." Jon smiled at her and cut her off when she opened her mouth to speak. "Don't worry about staying in her room. She wants you to have it."
Jay was a bit embarrassed at being so easily read as she nodded. Jon seemed satisfied at her response. "Are you hungry?" he asked as an older man joined them.
"Ah, no, I'm fine. I had dinner earlier," Jay declined politely. She doubt she had enough energy to eat even if she was hungry. She felt ready to collapse any second.
"Alright. This is my butler, Kyle. If you need anything, just push this button," Jon said as he motioned towards a black button on the wall beside the door. "Kyle or another servant will come to you."

Kyle bowed. "We will do our best to make sure you are comfortable, Miss Jay." The older man had dark brown hair mixed with gray and his trimmed beard matched. He wore a nice black suit.
"Thank you," Jay responded a bit awkwardly.
Kyle and Jon soon left her to get settled in. Deciding to take a hot bath, she went into the closet and examined the clothes Jon's daughter had left behind.
"Oh, wow. These clothes are gorgeous!" Jay exclaimed softly as she pulled out a gothic black and violet dress.
There were a mix of different styles, including Victorian era styled dresses and suits. Jay found herself wanting to try them all on but decided against it. Especially when she found the lingerie. Her face became hot as she imagined herself wearing them.
"I would look terrible," she said to herself as she picked out a t-shirt and pajama pants. She hurried out of the large walk-in closet; it was more like a room rather than a closet. She went into the large luxurious bathroom.
The shower was large with a glass frame and door. The flooring of the shower was made of stones. The tub was an in-ground tub made with black marble. There were two matching sinks on a matching counter. There were a multitude of skin care products and candles on the counter.
There were two large cabinets against the wall beside the door. In one, she found towels and washcloths. She grabbed one of each. She decided to take a bath, the idea seeming like heaven.
Feeling anxious about possibly messing something up, she turned the faucet on. Her eyes took in the huge in-ground tub. There were even jets on the sides. I feel like I'm in a movie, she thought.
Perhaps this was all a lucid dream and when she woke up, it would all just be a distant memory. She stripped out of her damp clothes and shivered when the air touched her bare skin. Once the tub was full, she carefully stepped in.
She flinched from the touch of the hot water on her cold skin but quickly adjusted to it. With a happy sigh, she sat down and submerged her body in the hot water. It wasn't long before she was beginning to fall asleep.
She caught herself dozing off and slapped her cheeks. "Wake up and bathe, girl!" she told herself before yawning. She stretched before finally washing up. She dragged herself to the bed once she was finished with her bath.
As she sat on the bed, feeling too tired to go shut the light off, she spotted a remote on the bedside table. Jon had mentioned it and had told her that it controlled the light and fan. She turned on the lamp before picking up the remote and pressing the light button.
One click dimmed the light, a second click shut it off. She set the small remote down and got into bed. Jay was happy to find that underneath the large comforter was a heating blanket. A quick dig around under the blankets revealed the cord and she plugged it in behind the table.
She turned it on before getting comfortable under the blankets. She reached over and turned the lamp off. Darkness engulfed the room and she lay awake for a bit, listening to the storm outside.
The ferocity of the storm had died down and now there was the occasional rumble of distant thunder amidst the drumming of the rain. She closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth of the heating blanket that was quickly warming up.
She yawned and stretched as she processed the night's events. She had run away from home officially and was now going to become an assassin. She had accepted Jon's offer and found herself a new possible home. She wondered if her mother was still outside, trying to find her.
She couldn't help but wish that she would get struck by lightning and suffer for everything she had ever done to her.
Her thoughts faded out and sleep quickly claimed her.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

Obligate of a Self-Ordained Sorcerer
Come join the Discord! It was a typical late-night friday for Mara, secluded in her apartment in front of a digital expanse, relentlessly mashing code into a keyboard. An introverted workaholic, but this was what she wanted - what she had strived so hard to achieve. So why did she feel so lost? Her life was productive, comfortable, satisfying. Plenty had it worse but she still felt... ungrateful? Stunted? The right word escaped her, but she could feel the general revelation settling upon her. With it came a choice that would set events in motion far beyond the meager scope of a 'New Game+'. So taking an intrusive portal to god-knows-where, Mara will come to find that her new world offers boons and banes with equal abandon. Magic, skills, and unforgiving difficulty. For a frail human shut-in, finding herself stranded in the middle of a sprawling dungeon was one of the least desirable outcomes. Food and water would be the least of her problems, why oh why couldn't she just get summoned by some pervy king to slay a demon army or something? This is a story of magic and adventure with skills and stats galore. A litrpg / isekai epic that I've been inspired to make after years of wonderful works like "So I'm a Spider," "Rimuru the Slime," "Azarinth Healer," "Negima!?," and plethora of other isekai and fantasy novels and animes. Special shout-out to Douglas Adams, a big influence on narative humor that's had a non-insignificant effect on my writing style. I hope you enjoy joining Mara on her journey as I attempt to scratch the itch they left behind.Chapters target 3-6k~ words. Though I'm personally aiming for a chapter every couple weeks, I think I can at least promise one a month with how busy work's been. I made a Patreon due to requests, if you'd like to support me there I'll be using it to fund artwork and RR ads for increased exposure.
