《Heart of the Forest (Hiatus)》Prologue

So here goes my first Fiction! English is not my first language so if you find any spelling or grammar mistakes point it out!
There were lots of books describing the end of the world (now they're considered research material), and most were wrong. Hell, even most movies didn't get it right (and we all know that movies, like TV, are always accurate). It wasn't a natural disaster, electricity didn't stop working and at least for the first few days there weren't any zombies.
So, what happened?
Well, every Government that survived the beginning ( that's what we are calling the first day but only because D day was already taken) exhausted every mean known to man to discover the truth but only discovered a few facts:
A rpg like system with blue pop-ups and all suddenly appeared A great number of monsters spawned (mostly goblins with an estimated ratio of 3 for every 5 humans) Lots of people died (specialists assume most humans that were sick, old or children were killed with more than 30% of the remaining population), killed by goblins or as a consequence of the panic that followed. This represented half of the world population
It's interesting to note that most highly militarized countries maintained their structures despite the high death toll while in third world countries the results varied. The consensus is that the organizations left behind weren't governments but people's armies or tyrannies. In other words, West Europe (like France, Germany and England), United States, Russia and Japan were able to restore order after the shock and countries like China, India and East Europe had mixed result (they restored order but with such a high cost that it wasn´t necessarily a good thing). Regions like Africa that had an abundance of weapons but lacked highly trained personnel didn´t fare well, but were in a better position compared with countries and regions where guns weren´t common. Considering this, it wasn´t hard to imagine what governments would do… Yes, a new arms race opened with the objective being to develop individuals into operatives well versed in the System, nuclear weapons were no longer important. It may sound illogical until you realize than a single high level “Player” can decimate a well organized military base by himself without destroying it and so retain the base utility.

Another point of interest is that some psychologists theorized that the system must have decreased human fear of death and modern inhibitions toward violence as a mechanism to cope with reality’s new brutality.
For those of us that are still alive, however, the only important fact is that to continue breathing, there is an extreme need of strength.
