《Rescendence》Chapter 3 - For Whom the Bell Tolls

Trying to keep the tension out of his voice Mitch asks "Can you please explain that a bit more?" She sighs again.
"Look, it's just a theory right now, but the higher-ups are saying that the people who are the most likely to die are the bottom ten percent from these tests. If they're even close to right, you have almost no chance of surviving the next Tolling. They think that whatever capacity people have to adapt to the changes the Tollings are causing are reflected by the test we're doing now."
Sweet Mary on a massive dick.
"So you're saying that those with a low score are most likely to die at the next Tolling... because they are the least able to deal with the shit they're pumping back in here?"
She nods. "Essentially."
"So I'm going to die in eight months."
"Most likely." She says it perfunctorily, but it lands in his mind like a tactical nuke.
"Fuck." He can't even muster up the energy to swear creatively. He should probably re-evaluate his opinion of Mutter Master.
"Yeah..." she says, almost apologetically.
"Do you have a chair around?" She nods and pulls out a chair he hadn't noticed from behind the desk.
He sits. "Fuck." He says again. She just stands quietly nearby. What can anyone say at a moment like this? "Sorry 'bout ya' luck"?
"You said it's just a theory though, right?"
"Technically... but so is Relativity..."
Shit... but relativity has a lot of verification; this probably doesn't, right? "Is there any proof? I mean, they could be wrong right?"
"They tested everyone in the armed forces last year before the last Tolling. I think they are probably using that data to draw some conclusions."

So, based on a data set then. Last Mitch checked there were over three million people in the Armed Forces. That's a significant representative sample. Studies involving just a few dozen subjects could be considered scientifically relevant.
They had to be wrong. There was an error in their methodology or something. The results are skewed. "Can you test me again?"
Another sigh, but accompanied by a sympathetic look. "Ok."
"Can we use a different machine?"
"Not really. I would have to get my sups' involved, and if they knew I told you this stuff I could get court-martialled." He looks at her in what was probably a pathetic way.
"Look, the best I can do is reboot the machine. It will take a minute or two but if it was an error in the system that should clear it out."
"Thank you." He truly is thankful, and it comes through in his voice.
She nods. He can tell this is all he is going to be able to get from her. If the result doesn't change, he is most likely entirely fucked. He's not a big prayer, but he takes a moment to try to send good vibes out into the universe and hopes that karma or whatever is out there listens.
After a bit, she says the machine is ready again. Mitch nods his thanks and hopes his sincerity bridges the gap left by the words he doesn't say. He approaches those silver handles again, this time staring at them as though they are a hungry man-eating viper. He stills himself for a moment before reaching out towards them. His hands stop just short of touching them.
"Grab the handles." She says, not unkindly.
Exhaling slowly, nervously, he takes a firm hold of the Argent Wands of Doom. She presses a button, and the machine emits a faint whir which he hadn't heard the first time. Did something change? He's broken out in a cold sweat. The only sound in the tent is his somewhat irregular breathing.

The printer starts and nearly startles him out of his skin.
The seargent holds the card it spits out towards him face side down.
If the handles were a man-eating viper this piece of plastic is a Daisy Cutter about to land on his head. He takes it. When he can convince himself that he is ready, he turns it over.
X0-1
"That's better! Right?"
She makes a face he can't quite read.
"Is that enough?"
"That's above one percent... but not by much." She says.
He tries to smile but fails miserably. "Thanks for double checking at least."
She nods and Mitch walks dejectedly towards the entrance.
***
Mitch's poor car wails miserably as he punches the steering wheel repeatedly.
"This is bullshit!" He screams at no one.
A wordless scream follows accompanied by two-handed shaking of the steering wheel. Startled people walking by in the parking area look at him strangely. "What's that dude's problem?" Says one. Mitch can't hear the other's reply.
Gritting his teeth and hissing a breath slowly through his teeth he starts the car and drives off; filled with rage and confusion.
***
He's been drinking for a while. When whiskey just made him more depressed, he switched to vodka. When that didn't work, he swapped to something else the bartender gave him. He didn't even look at the label. It could be fucking poison, what the fuck did he care?
***
Somehow he made it home. He's called in sick 4 days in a row and gone on a majestic bender. Booze, weed, legal, illegal he's run through it all. Yesterday he just asked his guy for whatever he could get for fifty bucks. The guy tried to tell him what it was but he didn't listen.
***
He's going to die. What can he do about it? No one even knows what the hell is going on, what's changing, why people are dying. He's just going to have to accept it. Let it go. Acknowledge his mortality.
There's no pill, no treatment, no alternative medicine.
Something about that thought sticks in his head. Alternative medicine? Like acupuncture or acupressure or something? Isn't that whole thing about the bodies energy?
As with so many weird and wonderful things he begins with a googol search.
"Fuck acceptance."

(DEMO) Colorless vol.1- Phantamoire Enigmata
This is a demo volume consisting only seven chapters. The sole reason of this publication is to show the world a glimpse of the project. Therefore, the final quality of the product will be lot more refined and polished. This demo might get deleted from RoyalRoad after the actual publication. Synopsis: "Knights wearing their shining armor serving righteous justice riding their glorious horses." We all have heard that story- Heroes who do the right in the purest way without any tampering. But, is it really that easy? Is the world and it's heroes really that pure? After all... fairytale is just a lie. I might be the first author in the world who despises writing. I haven't read any story books or novel in my entire life but children's story book (not even ten of them). So, why do I write? Simple answer- the story. Inexperienced I may be but I believe my project and it's quality. The actual story will be posted somewhere in 2019. The story will be devided into 7/8 volumes and 90 (approx.) chapters. I have been working on this project for 1 year now. It took me 5 months to finalize the concept and plot, 7 months for the story and it's already been 6 months in writing along with 2 times of total revamp.

The book of forever
An experimental diary of sorts recounting my life and experiences, written as a slightly whimsical scifi story about setting off from the past to unknown lands, rebuilding from nothing and finding myself again. The first section of the book contains matched chapters, a chapter for a interlude, both happening at the same time roughly The second section of the book contains more one off stories as we follow one of the travelers explore their heart as well as a unknown land, growing in the process. All of the text here was written in 10 syllable chunks, this reads like a epic of sorts, just with more philosophical focus and POV jumps. Hope you enjoy! >Updates may be sporadic as I only write when I have something about myself I want to share The chapters can all be read individually, although there may be some crossovers between them they work as single poems. You start at whatever chapter you want since these are a collection of roughly connected poems (although you'll notice tie ins and references to eachother)

Unique Fusion Magic Hex
World Essence. The mysterious energy coursing throughout the entire land of Vor'ten, and very possibly the entire world. This energy has allowed humanity to flourish, building great empires and vast kingdoms, conquering nature itself with just a sweep of their hand. Humans were the strongest existence, and with the help of channeling this World Essence, many were able to turn into Magic Knights, gaining magical abilities to combat the various fierce beasts throughout the lands.Alas... those glory days of old were long gone. Humanity has now been pushed to the brink of destruction, and now the remaining members of the human race are encased within giant domes known as 'Alkkras', made with the last remaining bits of the World Essence. It was said that those giant domes were the last gifts left by the remnants of the ancient human race, as a means to protect the future generation from the attacks of the many wild beasts roaming outside. Five Spiritualist Invokers, all combined together, used the last bit of the World Essence and sacrificed their lives to lay a gigantic, 1028-seal formation magic array to form these barriers, forever saving humanity, but also trapping humanity within these barriers. However, the humans were never completely helpless. No matter how little World Essence was left, the humans still had some remaining. Realizing the incoming crisis, the humans found a way to seal World Essence inside a special type of crystal. Soon, these crystals began to become implanted into weapons, turning them into World Essence Weapons, and they began to display properties of their own. Extreme heat. Bone chilling cold. Absurd sharpness. These normal weapons, after being imbued with the energy of the World Essence Crystals, began to form natural affinities to elements. Fire. Water. Earth. Wind. Darkness. Light. Using these weapons, one could become a Chevalier that wielded the power of the elements. However, if one wanted to reach a higher level of enlightenment and understanding, one could become an Invoker. Via the study of magic array formations, one could directly use the power of the World Essence to cast devastating magics upon the enemy. These people were Invokers, highly valued for their combat potential by the Army. These weapons and magical arrays were used in the great fight between the humans and the beasts long ago. They had long since been put away in storage, almost long forgotten...However, after ten-thousand years of suppression, the human race is beginning its counterattack against the Beasts... Synth was an Invoker in the Magecroft Academy. However, his talent was terrible, being only at the Spark Stage. This led to him being looked down upon and bullied. He was unable to cast any Calamity-rank or even Destruction rank spells, and was only able to cast Coalescing rank spells at the age of 17, a record low in the academy for cultivating these rare Invokers. Even though he put in more effort than anyone else, he was still unable to advance his Channeling Energy. But due to his constant research and study, Synth ended up creating a power that would go against the heavens - he had found how to Fuse spells together. After trying it out once, merging the magical array for the Small Fireball and the Mortal Judgement skills, he was able to create a mid-rank Destruction tier spell, Holy Judgement Flame. However, after this, no matter how hard he tried, he was unable to fuse more spells together or even cast them, and noticed a weird, pentagram shaped formation on his left arm. He would later call this mark the Fusion Magic Hex, a curse that prevented the wielder from casting magic that wasn't their own...This meant that with the exception of Synth's newly created skill, , he was going to have to create unique magic arrays if he ever wanted to step on the path of becoming an Invoker! This power that destroyed the laws of the Invoking System, and his unyielding persistence in testing and creating new spells, would later gain Synth the nickname the Unique Fusion Hex, and lead him to become one of the strongest beings in the entire World!
